Towards a Realistic Type IIA T^6/Z_4 Orientifold Model with Background Fluxes, Part 1: Moduli Stabilization
We apply the methods of DeWolfe et al. [hep-th/0505160] to a T^6/Z_4
orientifold model. This is the first step in an attempt to build a
phenomenologically interesting meta-stable de Sitter model with small
cosmological constant and standard model gauge groups.Comment: 1+30 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, v2: minor corrections, stability

D-Terms from Generalized NS-NS Fluxes in Type II
Orientifolds of type II string theory admit a certain set of generalized
NS-NS fluxes, including not only the three-form field strength H, but also
metric and non-geometric fluxes, which are related to H by T-duality. We
describe in general how these fluxes appear as parameters of an effective N=1
supergravity theory in four dimensions, and in particular how certain
generalized NS-NS fluxes can act as charges for R-R axions, leading to D-term
contributions to the effective scalar potential. We illustrate these phenomena
in type IIB with the example of a certain orientifold of T^6/Z_4.Comment: 31+1 pages, uses utarticle.cls; v2: references adde
Transmogrifying Fuzzy Vortices
We show that the construction of vortex solitons of the noncommutative
Abelian-Higgs model can be extended to a critically coupled gauged linear sigma
model with Fayet-Illiopolous D-terms. Like its commutative counterpart, this
fuzzy linear sigma model has a rich spectrum of BPS solutions. We offer an
explicit construction of the degree static semilocal vortex and study in
some detail the infinite coupling limit in which it descends to a degree
\C\Pk^{N} instanton. This relation between the fuzzy vortex and
noncommutative lump is used to suggest an interpretation of the noncommutative
sigma model soliton as tilted D-strings stretched between an NS5-brane and a
stack of D3-branes in type IIB superstring theory.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX(JHEP3
Holographic zero sound at finite temperature in the Sakai-Sugimoto model
In this paper, we study the fate of the holographic zero sound mode at finite
temperature and non-zero baryon density in the deconfined phase of the
Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. We establish the existence of such a
mode for a wide range of temperatures and investigate the dispersion relation,
quasi-normal modes, and spectral functions of the collective excitations in
four different regimes, namely, the collisionless quantum, collisionless
thermal, and two distinct hydrodynamic regimes. For sufficiently high
temperatures, the zero sound completely disappears, and the low energy physics
is dominated by an emergent diffusive mode. We compare our findings to
Landau-Fermi liquid theory and to other holographic models.Comment: 1+24 pages, 19 figures, PDFTeX, v2: some comments and references

Comments on Noncommutative Sigma Models
We review the derivation of a noncommutative version of the nonlinear sigma
model on \CPn and it's soliton solutions for finite emphasizing the
similarities it bears to the GMS scalar field theory. It is also shown that
unlike the scalar theory, some care needs to be taken in defining the
topological charge of BPS solitons of the theory due to nonvanishing surface
terms in the energy functional. Finally it is shown that, like its commutative
analogue, the noncommutative \CPn-model also exhibits a non-BPS sector.
Unlike the commutative case however, there are some surprises in the
noncommutative case that merit further study.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX (JHEP3), Minor changes, Discussion

Matrix Models and D-branes in Twistor String Theory
We construct two matrix models from twistor string theory: one by dimensional
reduction onto a rational curve and another one by introducing noncommutative
coordinates on the fibres of the supertwistor space P^(3|4)->CP^1. We comment
on the interpretation of our matrix models in terms of topological D-branes and
relate them to a recently proposed string field theory. By extending one of the
models, we can carry over all the ingredients of the super ADHM construction to
a D-brane configuration in the supertwistor space P^(3|4). Eventually, we
present the analogue picture for the (super) Nahm construction.Comment: 1+37 pages, reference added, JHEP style, published versio
Drinfeld-Twisted Supersymmetry and Non-Anticommutative Superspace
We extend the analysis of hep-th/0408069 on a Lorentz invariant
interpretation of noncommutative spacetime to field theories on
non-anticommutative superspace with half the supersymmetries broken. By
defining a Drinfeld-twisted Hopf superalgebra, it is shown that one can restore
twisted supersymmetry and therefore obtain a twisted version of the chiral
rings along with certain Ward-Takahashi identities. Moreover, we argue that the
representation content of theories on the deformed superspace is identical to
that of their undeformed cousins and comment on the consequences of our
analysis concerning non-renormalization theorems.Comment: 1+17 pages; typos fixed, minor correction
Toroidal Orientifolds in IIA with General NS-NS Fluxes
Type IIA toroidal orientifolds offer a promising toolkit for model builders,
especially when one includes not only the usual fluxes from NS-NS and R-R field
strengths, but also fluxes that are T-dual to the NS-NS three-form flux. These
new ingredients are known as metric fluxes and non-geometric fluxes, and can
help stabilize moduli or can lead to other new features. In this paper we study
two approaches to these constructions, by effective field theory or by toroidal
fibers twisted over a toroidal base. Each approach leads us to important
observations, in particular the presence of D-terms in the four-dimensional
effective potential in some cases, and a more subtle treatment of the
quantization of the general NS-NS fluxes. Though our methods are general, we
illustrate each approach on the example of an orientifold of T^6/Z_4.Comment: 59 pages, references adde
Non(anti)commutative SYM theory: Renormalization in superspace
We present a systematic investigation of one-loop renormalizability for
nonanticommutative N=1/2, U(N) SYM theory in superspace. We first discuss
classical gauge invariance of the pure gauge theory and show that in
contradistinction to the ordinary anticommutative case, different
representations of supercovariant derivatives and field strengths do not lead
to equivalent descriptions of the theory. Subsequently we develop background
field methods which allow us to compute a manifestly covariant gauge effective
action. One-loop evaluation of divergent contributions reveals that the theory
simply obtained from the ordinary one by trading products for star products is
not renormalizable. In the case of SYM with no matter we present a N=1/2
improved action which we show to be one-loop renormalizable and which is
perfectly compatible with the algebraic structure of the star product. For this
action we compute the beta functions. A brief discussion on the inclusion of
chiral matter is also presented.Comment: Latex file, 59 pages, 10 figures, One reference adde
Non-geometric flux vacua, S-duality and algebraic geometry
The four dimensional gauged supergravities descending from non-geometric
string compactifications involve a wide class of flux objects which are needed
to make the theory invariant under duality transformations at the effective
level. Additionally, complex algebraic conditions involving these fluxes arise
from Bianchi identities and tadpole cancellations in the effective theory. In
this work we study a simple T and S-duality invariant gauged supergravity, that
of a type IIB string compactified on a orientifold with
O3/O7-planes. We build upon the results of recent works and develop a
systematic method for solving all the flux constraints based on the algebra
structure underlying the fluxes. Starting with the T-duality invariant
supergravity, we find that the fluxes needed to restore S-duality can be simply
implemented as linear deformations of the gauge subalgebra by an element of its
second cohomology class. Algebraic geometry techniques are extensively used to
solve these constraints and supersymmetric vacua, centering our attention on
Minkowski solutions, become systematically computable and are also provided to
clarify the methods.Comment: 47 pages, 10 tables, typos corrected, Accepted for Publication in
