    Experimental study of the mechanical transmission of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV2/b) by Aedes Albopictus (Diptera: Clicidae) and Phlebotomus papatasi (diptera: psychodidae); 34447999

    Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is caused by a lagovirus mainly affecting European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), although other European and North American lagomorph species are also susceptible to fatal infection by the new viral variant RHDV2/b. In the present work, direct mechanical transmission of the rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV2/b variant) by the hematophagous Diptera Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) and the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) (Diptera: Psychodidae) was tested. For each species, six and three laboratory rabbits were exposed to bites of dipterous females partially fed on RHDV2/b viral suspension 2 h and 24 h prior to exposure, respectively. The rabbits were then monitored for clinical changes and mortality for 35 d, and seroconversion was assessed by indirect ELISA. No rabbit died or showed clinical signs of disease, and seroconversion was recorded in two rabbits challenged with P. papatasi females fed the viral suspension 2 h prior to exposure. The number of RHDV2/b RNA copies/female was higher in Ae. albopictus than in P. papatasi but the decrease over time of RNA load in Ae. albopictus was greater than that in P. papatasi. The results of this study suggest the inability of Ae. albopictus to serve as a direct mechanical vector of RHDV2/b, but sand flies could play a role in the local transmission of RHD. © The Author(s) 2021.     The Effect of Food Vouchers and an Educational Intervention on Promoting Healthy Eating in Vulnerable Families: A Pilot Study

    Cost has been reported as the main barrier to healthy eating in vulnerable groups. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a nutrition education intervention on adherence to Mediterranean Diet and health when providing food vouchers. This pilot study has a randomized control trial design. We included 66 vulnerable users from the Red Cross of Zaragoza (Spain). Intervention and control group individuals received 120 euros/month of food vouchers over 3 months to be spent in supermarkets (60 euros/month if under 12 y) plus a 10-week nutrition education program for the intervention group. Family food purchases were assessed using electronically recorded supermarket-obtained transactions. During and at the end of the intervention the percentage of healthy food was higher in the intervention than in the control group. Once the nutrition education was over, differences between groups dissipated. In the intervention group, health parameters improved, particularly weight-status, lipids, and liver enzymes. Control participants gained weight, although lipid and liver enzymes improved. Blood pressure and HbA1c did not improve in either the intervention or the control group. In conclusion, providing unrestricted food vouchers to vulnerable groups to increase healthy food consumption appears to be insufficient and should be accompanied by medium-long term nutrition education

    The nurse’s role in educating pediatric patients on correct inhaler technique: an interventional study

    The prevalence of pediatric respiratory diseases in Spain is 23%. Inhalation is the preferred route of administration but there are frequent errors in the performance of the inhalation technique leading a poor control of the disease. The aim of this research was to detect errors in the execution of the inhalation technique at a Pediatric Pulmonology Unit in a hospital of Aragón (Spain). In order to improve the administration of inhaled medication, an educational intervention for 1 year by nursing was conducted. This interventional study, including children aged 1 to 15 years with an inhalation therapy and who attended the Pediatric Pulmonology Unit, was conducted between September 2017 and September 2018. Logistic Regression models were conducted in SPSS. This study involved 393 children (61.1% boys). Before the intervention, 39.4% achieved a correct inhalation technique increasing up to 62.1% after the intervention. Those who had their first visit to the Unit, young children and girls had a higher risk of incorrect performance than those with subsequent visits, older children, and boys, respectively. The most common errors in the inhalation technique were not performing adequate apnoea after inhaling and not rinsing the mouth at the end of the procedure. The education given by nurses to pediatric patients improved the inhalation technique, achieving better control of the disease and use of the health system. © 2022 by the authors.     Development of a SNP parentage assignment panel in some North-Eastern Spanish meat sheep breeds

    Aim of study: To validate two existing single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels for parentage assignment in sheep, and develop a cost effective genotyping system to use in some North-Eastern Spanish meat sheep populations for accurate pedigree assignment.Area of study: SpainMaterial and methods: Nine sheep breeds were sampled: Rasa Aragonesa (n=38), Navarra (n=39), Ansotana (n=41), Xisqueta (n=41), Churra Tensina (n=38), Maellana (39), Roya Bilbilitana (n=24), Ojinegra (n=36) and Cartera (n=39), and these animals were genotyped with the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip array. Genotypes were extracted from the sets of 249 SNPs and 163 SNPs for parentage assignment designed in France and North America, respectively. Validation of a selected cost-effective genotyping panel of 158 SNPs from the French panel were performed by Kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP). Additionally, some functional SNPs (n=15) were also genotyped.Main results: The set of 249 SNPs for parentage assignment showed better diversity, probability of identity, and exclusion probabilities than the set of 163 SNPs. The average minor allele frequency for the set of 249, 163 and 158 SNPs were 0.41 + 0.01, 0.39 + 0.01 and 0.42 + 0.01, respectively. The parentage assignment rate was highly dependent to the percentage of putative sires genotyped.Research highlights: The described method is a cost-effective genotyping system combining the genotyping of SNPs for the parentage assignment with some functional SNPs, which was successfully used in some Spanish meat sheep breeds

    Early life risk factors and their cumulative effects as predictors of overweight in Spanish children

    Objectives: To explore early life risk factors of overweight/obesity at age 6 years and their cumulative effects on overweight/obesity at ages 2, 4 and 6 years. Methods: Altogether 1031 Spanish children were evaluated at birth and during a 6-year follow-up. Early life risk factors included: parental overweight/obesity, parental origin/ethnicity, maternal smoking during pregnancy, gestational weight gain, gestational age, birth weight, caesarean section, breastfeeding practices and rapid infant weight gain collected via hospital records. Cumulative effects were assessed by adding up those early risk factors that significantly increased the risk of overweight/obesity. We conducted binary logistic regression models. Results: Rapid infant weight gain (OR 2.29, 99% CI 1.54–3.42), maternal overweight/obesity (OR 1.93, 99% CI 1.27–2.92), paternal overweight/obesity (OR 2.17, 99% CI 1.44–3.28), Latin American/Roma origin (OR 3.20, 99% CI 1.60–6.39) and smoking during pregnancy (OR 1.61, 99% CI 1.01–2.59) remained significant after adjusting for confounders. A higher number of early life risk factors accumulated was associated with overweight/obesity at age 6 years but not at age 2 and 4 years. Conclusions: Rapid infant weight gain, parental overweight/obesity, maternal smoking and origin/ethnicity predict childhood overweight/obesity and present cumulative effects. Monitoring children with rapid weight gain and supporting a healthy parental weight are important for childhood obesity prevention

    Ideal cardiovascular health and inflammation in European adolescents: The HELENA study

    Background and aims Inflammation plays a key role in atherosclerosis and this process seems to appear in childhood. The ideal cardiovascular health index (ICHI) has been inversely related to atherosclerotic plaque in adults. However, evidence regarding inflammation and ICHI in adolescents is scarce. The aim is to assess the association between ICHI and inflammation in European adolescents. Methods and results As many as 543 adolescents (251 boys and 292 girls) from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study, a cross-sectional multi-center study including 9 European countries, were measured. C-reactive protein (CRP), complement factors C3 and C4, leptin and white blood cell counts were used to compute an inflammatory score. Multilevel linear models and multilevel logistic regression were used to assess the association between ICHI and inflammation controlling by covariates. Higher ICHI was associated with a lower inflammatory score, as well as with several individual components, both in boys and girls (p < 0.01). In addition, adolescents with at least 4 ideal components of the ICHI had significantly lower inflammatory score and lower levels of the study biomarkers, except CRP. Finally, the multilevel logistic regression showed that for every unit increase in the ICHI, the probability of having an inflammatory profile decreased by 28.1% in girls. Conclusion Results from this study suggest that a better ICHI is associated with a lower inflammatory profile already in adolescence. Improving these health behaviors, and health factors included in the ICHI, could play an important role in CVD prevention

    Evaluating Drug Prescription Patterns in Undiagnosed Common Variable Immunodeficiency Patients

    Objective: To compare the consumption of antibiotics (AB), systemic steroids, and inhaled bronchodilators/glucocorticoids in the 3 years preceding the diagnosis of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) among CVID patients and matched controls and to estimate whether the level of consumption was associated with the risk of a subsequent CVID diagnosis. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study, identifying all individuals (n=130 cases) diagnosed with CVID in Denmark (1994–2014) and 45 age- and sex-matched population controls per case (n=5850 controls) from national registers. Drug consumption was estimated as defined daily doses per person-year. We used conditional logistic regression to compute odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: In the 3 years preceding a CVID diagnosis, we observed more frequent and higher consumption of all three drug classes. The association between consumption and risk of subsequent CVID diagnosis was statistically significant for all drug classes. The association was stronger with higher consumption and shorter time to CVID diagnosis. The fraction of cases compared to the controls redeeming ≥1 prescription of the included drugs during the study period was higher for AB (97% vs 52%), systemic steroids (35% vs 7.4%), and inhaled bronchodilators/glucocorticoids (46% vs 11.7%) (p&lt;0.001). Conclusion: CVID patients have significantly higher use of AB, systemic steroids, and inhaled bronchodilators/glucocorticoids in the 3 years preceding CVID diagnosis than controls. Prescribing these drugs in primary healthcare could be an opportunity to consider (proactive) screening for CVID. Further studies are needed to identify optimal prescription cutoffs that could endorse its inclusion in public health policies.</p

    Facilitating factors and barriers in the return to work of working women survivors of breast cancer: a qualitative study

    Working breast cancer survivors face several challenges when returning to work (RTW). Some qualitative studies have been carried out taking into account just the vision of these women in relation to the facilitators and barriers encountered when RTW. However, this study aims to complement the patient’s vision with two very active agents in this process, such as health professionals and company managers. Although the experience of working women with breast cancer, health professionals and company managers did not always coincide, these focus groups provided many barriers and facilitators in the RTW process of female workers with breast cancer. Many of the problems seen by these agents were related to the lack of understanding and adaptation to the situation (e.g., the company did not provide an explanation to the colleagues of the affected worker). New protocols and multidisciplinary work involving different agents (including physical and psychological rehabilitation) seems to be necessary
