We examined the accuracy of mental rotation and spatial recall within an augmented reality sandbox to study the effects of two-dimensional and three-dimensional learning. The goal of the study was to gain feedback about the ability to use an augmented reality sandbox for learning spatial relationships and testing spatial memory. Using Piaget’s Three Mountain Task (Robinson & Robinson, 1983) as a basis for our study, at encoding participants were shown either a two-dimensional image of a landscape or a three-dimensional landscape created in the sandbox, both the same scale (2x3 feet). Participants were given 30 seconds to commit the landscape to memory. Participants then engaged in a distractor task for 3 minutes to clear their short-term memory. Participants were then asked to recreate the landscape that was provided but from a rotated point of view. We found that correctly created scenes from three-dimensional encoding recreations (M=4.50 SD=1.27) contain more accurately placed features than the two-dimensional recall (M=2.42 SD=.90), t(20)=4.50,

Earthquake Monitoring and Response from Space: The TREMOR Concept

Earthquakes and their after-effects claim thousands of lives and cause enormous property damage each year. Early warning of impending seismological events has the potential to reduce human suffering and physical damage resulting from these natural disasters. Reliable earthquake precursors have yet to be identified, but some research is currently being performed into phenomena that could be observable from space. Satellites have been unquestionably beneficial in the response to earthquakes, providing essential communication and remote sensing support. The Technological Resources for Earthquake MOnitoring and Response (TREMOR) concept was initially developed as a team project at the 2007 International Space University Summer Session Program. It recommends the establishment of an international non-governmental organization that can more efficiently co-ordinate space-based and ground-based resources for the protection of human lives and property. The TREMOR concept is explored further here, concentrating on its use of space technology to minimize the economic and human impact of earthquakes. Updated cost estimates for TREMOR satellite mission concepts are also presented

    Green Technology

Since the very beginning of this century, the Russian Federation has promoted, in its relations with LatinAmerica, the Caribbean and Africa, some issues from the 2023 New Concept for Foreign Policy recentlydefined. In a period featured by the systemic and multidimensional crisis of capitalism, Russia has considered, opportunely, the contribution of both regions in the search for a new kind of financial and economicrelations. As a consequence, such an approach has a strategic nature: Latin America and the Caribbeanoffer wide possibilities for an opening of diverse and innovative economic fields; while Africa continues tobe an important area of geopolitical confrontation, although on a smaller scale than in other regions. Taking into account the previous explanation, this paper evaluates the state of the relations between the Russian Federation and Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, respectively, in the prior period to the approval of the New Russian Strategy for Foreign Affairs (2000-2022). For this, the state of relations of both regions with the United States of America in the same period of study and the examination of the lines proposed in the 2023 new Russian concept are key elements for clarifying to what extent we can appreciate the opening or the consolidation of "new" perspectives of rapprochement in both directions, the Latin American and the African ones.

The aim of this study was to identify new compounds active against Plasmodium falciparum based on our previous research carried out on 3-phenyl-quinoxaline-2-carbonitrile 1,4-di-N-oxide derivatives. Twelve compounds were synthesized and evaluated for antimalarial activity. Eight of them showed an IC(50) less than 1 microM against the 3D7 strain. Derivative 1 demonstrated high potency (IC(50)= 0.63 microM) and good selectivity (SI=10.35), thereby becoming a new lead-compound

The present research sheds light on the importance of physical activity with regards to self-concept in Spanish adolescents and considers physical exercise, family and academic variables. An explanatory and relational study was conducted. A total of 2,134 teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years old participated in the study. A descriptive and relational analysis by means of the ANOVA Test was also undertaken. The results obtained are discussed here taking into account the relevant specialised literature. It was found that two thirds of the students sampled did exercise regularly, team sports being the most popular. These learners presented a high degree of self-concept, particularly for the social and family dimensions. It can also be concluded from this study that better physical condition and appearance are related to sport engagement, and that physical activity is related to improved self image and to fostering social and family relationships
