The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of information availability and use on the Economic Integration (EI) of small scale business owners, and the roles of libraries. This was achieved with the aid of five research questions and four null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the embedded type of the mixed research design. The quantitative component employed a survey research of the correlational type for research questions one to four and the research hypotheses. This was complemented or supported by a qualitative component that addresses research question five. . The target population for the study comprised of sixty-two (62) small scale business owners in University of Ibadan community. Total enumeration was adopted as the sampling technique due to the manageable population. The closed-ended questionnaire was used to elicit data for the quantitative component of the study while structured interview elicited data for the qualitative component. Data collected from the questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, means and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (correlation, multiple regression and ANOVA).The study found that small scale business owners in University of Ibadan community had high level of economic integration, information was highly available to them and their level of information use was high. Also, information availability and use, individually and jointly influenced economic integration. The authors concluded that how economically integrated small scale business owners will be, is determined by how much information they utilize. Recommendations were made on how libraries could foster EI in line with the study

The study investigated how academic libraries can enhance the actualization of the United Nations’ developmental agenda in Nigeria, in a bid to make the world a better place for all.  To this end, three (3) pertinent research objectives were generated to guide the conduct of the study which translated into the questions for the study. The survey type of the descriptive research design was adopted for a population of 270 librarians from 18 academic libraries across the six (6) geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Total enumeration was adopted as sampling technique, while questionnaire was used to collect data. Out of the 270 copies of questionnaire distributed, 202 were retrieved and found useable, constituting 75% response rate. The descriptive statistics was used in analyzing the data for the study. The study showed that academic libraries contribute to the actualization of the sustainable development goals in Nigeria by providing conducive learning space and information resources to users. On ways academic libraries can foster attainment of SDGs, the study revealed that these libraries should engage in collaboration that supports information dissemination and strive to bridge the information needs of government and non-governmental institutions. Moreover, the study found that the major challenges of academic libraries in the provision of information services for the attainment of SDGs are poor networking among libraries and library professionals and inadequate/irregular training of library staff. Thus, recommendations were made in view of the challenges discovered and the study’s objectives

Objectives: The study examines the impact of bankruptcy threats on the likelihood of earnings manipulation in Nigerian listed banks. Prior Works: There is robust empirical evidence on the relationship between bankruptcy threat and earnings management in other countries while scanty evidence exists in Nigeria, hence this study was carried out in order to see if such results obtainable in other countries may hold in Nigeria. Approach: Using Altman Z-score and Beneish M-score, the ex-post-facto research design within a panel framework was employed and binary regression models was used in testing the hypothesis of the study via E-view 8.0.  The study period is during 2011-2015. Results: Result reveals that bankruptcy threat has no significant impact on the likelihood of an upward earnings manipulation in Nigeria listed banks. Implications: The implication is that manipulation of earnings in Nigerian banks is spurred significantly by other factors outside the threat of bankruptcy.  By this, regulators and bank managements are to place less emphasis on the bankruptcy position of banks when probing into issues of earnings manipulation because banks manipulate earnings not just because of the threat of bankruptcy, as non-potentially bankrupt firms engaged in upward earnings manipulation. Value: Using the Altman Z-score and Beneish M-score, the study contributes to literature on the relationship between bankruptcy threat and earnings manipulation and submit that non-potentially bankrupt firms involve in upward earnings manipulation

We examine the influence of external debt on Nigeria’s economic growth. Annual data having time series properties on external debt, external debt service, external reserve, exchange rate, foreign direct investment and economic growth proxy by changes in RGDP from 1981 to 2017 were obtained from the statistical bulletin issued by Nigeria’s apex bank. Analyses focused on using both descriptive statistical and error correction model methods. From the analyses, it was found that the influence exerted by External Debt on Nigeria’s economic growth is insignificant and negative when examined in the short run while it significantly exert a negative influence on the economy in the long run. Stimulated by our findings, we conclude that Nigeria has not begun to reap significantly, from efficient sourcing and effective utilization of external debt, as its sway on economic growth of Nigeria in both short and long run period considered in this study is negativ

Seven hundred and two high vaginal swab samples of apparently healthy adult females with recurrent vaginal discharge were collected and analyzed at Searchlight Medical Diagnostic Centre, Ekpoma between July 2003 and August 2005. Isolation, identification and antibiogram of isolates were done using standard Microbiological techniques. Randomized Block Design and Completely Randomized Design at (α = 0.1) were used to test the statistical significance of results. While occupational distribution of isolates was not statistically significant, age and response of bacterial isolates to antibiotics used were statistically significant. Total number and percentage prevalence of bacteria isolated include: 297(42.4%) Chromobacterium violaceum, 156 (22.2%) Escherichia coli and 139 (19.8%) Staphylococcus aureus. Chromobacterium violaceum was 81.8% sensitive to ofloxacin, and 12.8% to Ceftriazone. Escherichia coli and S. aureus were 70.5% and 71.9% sensitive to sparfloxacin respectively. Though source of infection of C. violaceum in Ekpoma was not very clear, soil and water contamination and other risk factors were hypothesized. A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosis. Surveillance with improved diagnostic facilities can increase awareness among health care providers on this form of infection. Appropriate systemic antimicrobial therapy to halt progression of infection is mandatory, even when the infection appears to be localized

The study examined the relationship between external control, effort expectancy and use of EIRs among undergraduates in two selected universities in Oyo State, Nigeria. The survey research design of correlational type was adopted for this study across undergraduates in Ajayi Crowther University (N=1,619) and Lead City University (N=2,046), with a total population of 3,665. The study found that both independent variables of external control and effort expectancy had individual significant relationship with undergraduates’ use of EIRs. Also, there was a significant positive relationship between perception of external control and effort expectancy in the use of EIRs. Both independent variables when taken together significantly influence use of EIRs among the undergraduates. The study concludes that the level of EIRs use in the universities understudied will be a function of available control or facilitating condition and the ease in using these resources. Recommendations for the study were made according

    Get PDF
Since the advent of technology, the ability for Man to do work has been enhanced by the discovery of various forms of energy and the efficient manage-ment of these energy resources. Thus, all over the world, the GNP of a nation depends on the energy consumption per capita and the growth in the macro-economics of the locality. This paper addresses the Edo State’s Governments Rural Electrification Scheme, which has been in operation since 1957. The population of the localities, the area coverage in square kilometres and the index of industrialization of the Local Government Area (LGA) are presented. The number of electrified towns compared with the total number of localities per LGA by the successive governments’ shows that the rate of rural electrification is 18%. Consequent-ly, industrialization and the standard of living of Edo State’s people are also seriously affected. It is rec-ommended that to enhance the economic disposi-tion of rural people, the federal government, state government, the local government authority, busi-ness operators in the localities and people involved, must put all their resources together to build stable and reliable electrification schemes all over the country, the back bone of any nations technological development and stable Gross National Product (GNP). The recommendations made will benefit other African countries in general

To thrive in this era, one needs varieties of information, no matter how versed one is in a field or profession. Information is new knowledge, which leads to a change in actions of people exposed to it. The concept of information needs and seeking behaviour of undergraduate has been of great concern to stakeholders especially in developing countries where access to information is seen as a mirage. Researchers have made it known that, the way students organize their learning and search for academic information could be considered very crucial to their overall performance at the end of the day. Thus, information needs and seeking behaviour is pertinent for undergraduate academic performance. Notwithstanding, no study has been conducted on undergraduate information needs and seeking behaviour at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. In this light, the study examined information needs and seeking behaviour of undergraduates in the University of Ilorin.  Survey design was adopted using a questionnaire as instrument for data collection. A simple random sampling technique was employed to sample twenty (20) respondents each from the twelve (12) faculties in the university. To achieve the objectives of the study, five (5) research questions were developed to guide the study. The results indicate that undergraduate use information sought to prepare for examination, test and assignment while information sources available from which the respondents seek information are books, journals, Internet, etc. The study recommends that adequate and relevant information materials should be acquired so as to meet undergraduate’s information needs.
