Models for Predicting Maximum Potential Intensity of Tropical Cyclones

    Get PDF
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are considered as extreme weather events, which has a low-pressure center, namely an eye, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produces heavy rain, storm surges, and can cause severe destruction in coastal areas worldwide. Therefore, reliable forecasts of the maximum potential intensity (MPI) of TCs are critical to estimate the damages to properties, lives, and risk assessment. In this study, we explore and propose various regression models, to predict the potential intensity of TCs in the North Atlantic at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72- hour forecasting lead time. In addition, a popular machine learning method, the Gradient Boosted Regression Tree (GBRT) algorithms is also used to further predict the TCs intensity changes in every 12-h over its entire lifespan (up to 72-hour) and the model is optimized by the Bayesian Optimization algorithm. The MPI is determined by using maximum wind speed (VMAX) measured in knots associated with a TC. The model utilizes the data of 160 TCs (n = 8,011) over North Atlantic Basin obtained from the extended best track database from 2000 to 2021. We used data from 2000-2016 for model calibration and data from 2017-2021 for model validation. The results indicate that radius of maximum wind (RMAX), minimum central pressure (MCP), and latitude are the significant predictors that captures MPI of observed TCs. Some other implications of the results are also discussed

Pasture and rangeland make up about 45 percent of the agricultural land in the U.S. Great Plains and one of the most common form of mismanagement of this pasture is overgrazing. Which results in many detrimental effects on environment. Many practitioners endorsed Rotational grazing (RG) as an improved grazing management practice over season-long continuous grazing. The overall goal of the current study is to assess the certain aspects of using RG in the U.S. Great Plains. Using mail survey data of the of 874 beef cattle producers of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas, the study found that neighborhood practice, government agencies, education, and slope of a land significantly affect nonadopters perceived benefits of RG practices. The results of the study further reveal that adopters with a higher proportion of grassland, less liability ratio, a lower share of leased land, and located relatively less steep sloped land generally perceive higher benefits from RG practices. The results of the study also indicate that the RG adopters who received cost share generally have higher proportion of grassland, higher ranch income ratio, fewer adoption years, put higher importance to the university extensions as information source, operate an increased proportion of land with LCC I and II, and located further north to the study region. The results from ordered logistic regression model further indicate that producers are more willing to adopt RG practices in the future with different subsidy amounts those who had more farming experiences, had less grassland acreage, and more liability ratio, emphasize the importance of university extensions, neighboring farms adopted the practices in their region. Furthermore, those who perceive lower initial investment and maintenance costs, and located further west/arid region of the study region are more likely to accept subsidy amount to adopt the practices. Our findings suggest that perceived benefits of RG could vary for producers with different ranch characteristics and regional factors and non-adopters with the aforementioned characteristics may be a suitable target group for public fund investment. Therefore, ranch characteristics, regional factors, non-adopters’ characteristics should be considered in future research and outreach programs formulate the incentive levels required to successfully promote the adoption of RG practices in the U.S. Great Plains

This research aims to investigate whether location, facilities and quality of on-campus hostels affect students’ attitude living in on-campus hostels and their satisfaction with hostel life. Next, relationship between students’ attitude and their satisfaction with hostel life are also examined. Data were collected from 230 students living in on-campus hostels in a public higher learning institution in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia. Empirical results via multiple regressions discovered that students’ satisfaction living in hostels is only affected by hostels quality, except for hostels location and hostels facilities. Students are very concerned that the floor be covered with tile, and the plumbing system be perfect with no water problems which affect their satisfaction living in hostels. Further investigation of the study recognized that students’ attitude is strongly affected by satisfaction followed by hostel facilities. This study provides strong evidence that could help the student housing administrators and the university hostel management and other accommodation services to better understand the customer satisfaction with the service delivery by identifying the significant factors in determining student satisfaction and improving the performance of university hostels towards meeting the satisfaction of students by providing highquality living environments. Direction for future research is also exemplified

Bangladesh's external relations : the strategy of a small power in a subsystem

    No full text
The thesis examines how Bangladesh relates herself to her international environment. While the central concern of the study is the behaviour-pattern of a single state actor in the international arena, the fact that the subject shares certain characteristic attributes with many others, invests the inquiry with wider relevance. The thesis argues that Bangladesh's two foreign policy aspirations, the search for security and the quest for external resources for development, have led to co-terminous rather than mutually exclusive policies, that have for their thrust the weaving of a web of extra-regional linkages. These linkages, which are described and analyzed, are meant to buttress Bangladesh's sense of security vis-a-vis the regional preeminent power as well as to support her developmental aspirations. The various policies and postures that Dacca tends to adopt towards events and issues of international significance, as well as the factors influencing such policies and postures, are also explained. The study reviews the intricate problems that Bangladesh as an aid-recipient country confronts with regard to aid-donors It focuses on how her ability to manoeuvre in policy-making is curtailed due to this relationship. It explores the role, interests, and predilections, particularly with regard to foreign affairs, of the leading category within the community, which is a segment of the international elite

Cross-cultural communication has a significant impact on international students in Malaysia culture regarding their gender and nationalism. Due to the lack of information and research, as well as no initiation to find out the ways to resolve the issue, the international students are concerned regarding their gender and nationalism in a host country perspective. We used appropriate literature in the fields of global teaching acculturation and adaptation of overseas students; and discrimination research and their backgrounds to discuss how global students recognize and articulate their domestic and gender identity in UMS, Sabah, Malaysia. For global students, a qualitative technique refers to say their tales overseas and describe the variables influencing the development of domestic and gender identity. A total number of participants are forty-three, who study in different faculties and institutions in UMS. In findings, it categorizes in three broad factors and those are (1) negotiations of national identity, (2) femaleness and nationhood, and lastly (3) gender negotiation: maleness and nation. Overall, this research shows how learning about who you are and who you aim to become involves the daily lives of studying in UMS. University educators and staff need to investigate and alter strategies in respects that foster understanding of how multidimensional identities can be, but also show how cultural obstacles can generate hierarchies that perpetuate inequalities

The development of customer loyalty in online banking has become a basic issue because of the positive and constructive influence on banks' long haul productivity. With increasing Internet access, the competition is only one tick away. Customer loyalty in online banking sector appears to be essential for electronic banks both in a competitive and additionally an economic sense. Hence, there is a need to understand how customer loyalty in the online banking sector is created. Previous studies found that e-service quality, e-satisfaction, and e-trust have direct or indirect effects on the creation of e-loyalty. However, previous studies just demonstrated a piece of relationships between these variables and their effects on e-loyalty. A hole can be discovered that there is not a comprehensive view on all of the effects that service quality, customer satisfaction, and customer trust have on customer loyalty in the context of online banking. Therefore, the present research tried to provide a comprehensive model to fill the crevice of previous literature and demonstrate the relationship of e-service quality, e-satisfaction, and e-trust with e-loyalty in the online banking sector. The target sample in this investigation was experienced Internet banking users. Based on the investigation, it is discovered that e-satisfaction and e-trust assume the real role to construct e-loyalty in the online banking sector. However, e-service quality is not a predictor of customer e-loyalty towards Internet banking websites. It means that customers tend not to be steadfast even. However, the online banking service providers provide great services. The investigation impediments, suggestions, alongside directions for further research are discussed
