    INTERNATIONALIZATION OF AN AFRICAN UNIVERSITY IN THE POST-COLONIAL ERA: A CASE STUDY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

    This case study uses post-colonial and dependency theoretical lenses to investigate the forces influencing policy, procedures, and participation in international activity in the post-colonial African university environment of Kenya’s first national public university—the University of Nairobi (UoN). The research addresses (1) the approaches and strategies adopted by UoN to engage in international activity; (2) the changes that have taken place over time in international activity engagement at UoN since the attainment of political independence by the Republic of Kenya; and (3) the rationales driving participation in international activity. This investigation included library research, document analysis, multiple campus visits, and 20 formal interviews with the faculty and administrators of the University of Nairobi, Kenya. I argue that even though the University of Nairobi now exhibits some degree of agency in her international engagement as an independent post-colonial African University, limitations to this agency are evident given her colonial genesis as a university college linked to the University of London. Despite the fact that greater control has been realized in curricula issues, institutional level governance, income generating projects, and joint research collaboration and international partnerships, the road to independence in international engagement in a post-colonial university environment is still under construction. The University of Nairobi faces many challenges in her efforts to find a place in the global community of higher education. These challenges include, but are not limited to, lack of resources for human capacity building, shortage of faculty and staff, heavy teaching load, bureaucracy, loss of faculty control in setting their research agendas, commercialization of higher education, intellectual property rights violations, and brain drain. Rationales driving internationalization at the University of Nairobi are a consequence of contextual factors, some of which are external to the university and others internal and individual in nature. For example, whereas the academic rationales for participation, including research outlet, professional development, and networking are commonly cited as key motivators for international engagement, equally powerful economic motivators drive participation. I conclude this investigation by questioning the assumption that there can be balanced interdependence between marginalized African institutions of higher education (IHEs) and the developed world, as internationalization proponents suggest, arguing that these institutions are yet to break away from the colonial mold that led to their creation.     Kepemimpinan perempuan di kelompok bimbingan ibadah haji (KBIH) : studi kasus di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU kabupaten Wonosobo

    Penelitian ini berusaha mengetahui bagaimana kepemimpinan perempuan di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU dan apa faktor pendukung dan penghambat kepemimpinan perempuan di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Data primer dalam penelitian ini adalah informasi langsung dari Hj. Istiqomah Ghofir. Data sekunder diperoleh melalui arsip, dokumen, visi dan misi, AD/ART, struktur organisasi, serta program kerja yang terdapat di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU. Teknik pengambilan data meliputi: observasi, interview, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode induktif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, kepemimpinan Hj Istiqomah Ghofir termasuk dalam tipe kepemimpinan demokratis. Tipe kepemimpinan demokratis yang diterapkan Hj. Istiqomah Ghofir di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU adalah dengan selalu menyertakan pengurus dan jama’ah dalam setiap pengambilan keputusan. Adapun faktor pendukung kepemimpinan Hj. Istiqomah Ghofir di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU yaitu terdiri dari SDM yang berkualitas dan berpengalaman (pembimbing dan pengurus), sarana dan prasarana yang lengkap, jumlah jama’ah yang mayoritas merupakan warga Nahdhatul Ulama (NU), dukungan dari Kementrian Agama, meningkatnya dukungan dan partisipasi tokoh masyarakat dan tokoh agama, kerjasama yang baik dengan stakeholders dan instansi swasta terkait , serta faktor keluarga sebagai pembentuk kepribadian Hj. Istiqomah Ghofir sebagai seorang pemimpin. Sedangkan faktor penghambat kepemimpinan Hj. Istiqomah Ghofir di KBIH Ar-Rohmah Muslimat NU yaitu terdiri dari tingkat SDM dan usia jama’ah yang berbeda, perbedaan pemahaman agama dalam satu kloter, belum akrabnya antara anggota dengan anggota, karu, dan karom secara personal, dan munculnya KBIH-KBIH baru sehingga peluang mendapat jamaah yang banyak semakin sempit

    Milk is an almost perfect food for a complete nutritional content and is a good medium for the growth of microbes, both pathogenic and non-pathogenic. One of pathogenic bacteria that may contaminate the milk is Salmonella typh., All dairy products: either fresh milk, pasteurized, UHT milk, milk powder and Salmonella sp. should not be there at all. One of the non-thermal pasteurization method that can be used for milk pasteurization by using Pulsed Electic Field ( PEF). PEF keep fresh food in physical, chemical and nutitional properties, as well as increasing the shelf life of food. The purpose of this research studid Influence of the number of beats and the distances between the collection rate of the decline in the population of Salmonella typhi, and Influence of the number of pulses and pulse sets the distance between the physicochemical properties of milk). Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the inoculation of Salmonella typhi (incubation for 5 hours at 37 ° C) with a number of 1.98 x 107 cfu / ml effect on the value of total acid, pH, alcohol test, test reductase, and emulsion stability, but has no effect on specific gravity of milk. PEF treatment does not affect the value of total acid, pH, alcohol test, emulsion stability, and density, but the effect on bacterial population decline of Salmonella typhi and test reductase. The decrease in population was obtained from the Salmonella typhi bacteia treatment rate number 1000 and the distance between nodes 2 microseconds pulse. Increased time highest reductase obtained after treatment the number of beats in 1000 and the distances between the collection of 241 microseconds pulse 2 minutes. Initial number of Salmonella typhi was 7.296 log cfu / ml. The highest decline rate was obtained from the treatment the number 1000 and the distance between nodes is 2,225 microseconds pulse 2 log cycles.     Decision Making as a Factor in Management Efficiency among Principals of Secondary Schools in Kenya

    Management of schools needs professionalism in the way decisions are made so as to cause effect towards achieving the set goals and objectives. The right decision on the way to manipulate resources is very critical and therefore Principals in secondary schools have the duty to integrate a diversity of elements so as to make good decisions within their institutions. While systematic and good decisions may cause sanity in the way operations take place in schools, haphazard and autocratic decisions may destroy any developmental focus of the school. In the Kenyan school context, a number of disturbing events have been witnessed in schools which point to the way Principals of secondary schools make decisions and how effective the decisions they make aid in the management of the institutions. Often, the decisions which Principals of schools and who are assumed to have been trained make about their schools culminate into notable differences in the way the decisions impact on the development and performance of the schools. Poor decision making has caused unwarranted strikes that have seen the destruction of property and in some cases death in schools.     Penelitian ini dilandasi oleh permasalahan sampah. Laju timbulan sampah meningkat setiap tahun dan tidak diimbangi dengan pengelolaan sampah yang baik. Kabupaten Lamongan memiliki permasalahan pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga. Oleh karena itu, Pemerintah Kabupaten Lamongan membuat kebijakan tentang pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga yang berupa program Lamongan Green and Clean. Program ini mampu menciptakan kampung yang sehat di Kabupaten Lamongan Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Fokus penelitian yaitu: 1. implementasi kebijakan Lamongan Green and Clean dalam mewujudkan kampung sehat yang diteliti dari teori Van Meter Van Horn meliputi ukuran dan tujuan kebijakan, sumberdaya manusia dan non manusia, karakteristik lembaga sebagai agen, sikap/kecenderungan para pelaksana, komunikasi antar organisasi dan aktivitas pelaksana, dan lingkungan ekonomi, sosial, politik. 2. Faktor pendukung dan penghambat implementasi program Lamongan Green and Clean dalam mewujudkan kampung sehat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketercapaian program dalam mewujudkan kampung sehat yang merupakan kerja keras para aktor pelaksana didukung oleh anggaran dan waktu. Kedudukan Badan Lingkungan Hidup sebagai perencana, pelaksana dan juga monitoring program ditunjukan dengan kemauan, keinginan dan komitmen untuk mencapai tujuan. Hubungan para aktor pelaksana menyebabkan adanya perubahan pada lingkungan ekonomi, sosial dan politik. Dalam adanya kebijakan yang dibuat, terdapat faktor pendukung dan penghambat implementasi program. Faktor pendukung: dukungan elit politik, dasar hukum, kreativitas dan pendapatan warga naik, banyak pihak yang tertarik untuk bekerjasama.     Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aplikasi pembelajaran pemahaman kandungan ayat alquran melalui pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) siswa kelas VIII MTs N 34 Jakarta serta untuk mengetahui hasil pembelajaran mata pelajaran alquran hadis melalui pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) dalam meningkatkan pemahaman kandungan ayat alquran siswa kelas VIII MTs N 34 Jakarta. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). PTK dilaksanakan sebagai upaya untuk mengatasi permasalahan yang muncul di dalam kelas, pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode pengamatan atau observasi, catatan lapangan, wawancara, dan pelaksanaan tes hasil belajar disetiap akhir pertemuan. Satu siklus itu terdiri dari empat tahapan, yaitu: perencanaan tindakan (planning), pelaksanaan tindakan (acting), Pengamatan (observing), dan refleksi (reflecting). Penelitian ini dilakukan di MTs N 34 Jakarta, pada siswa kelas VIII.2 (delapan) yang berjumlah 30 siswa, semester ganjil tahun ajaran 2017/2018. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan pemahaman kandungan ayat alquran dalam pelajaran alquran hadis melalui pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) ditandai dengan peningkatan ketuntasan belajar siswa dalam setiap siklus, yaitu siklus I (53,3%) dan siklus II (100%) dengan nilai rata-rata siklus I adalah 74,66 dan siklus II adalah 86,16. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa penggunaan pendekatan CTL dapat meningkatkan pemahaman kandungan ayat alquran tentang kuraih ketenangan hidup dengan tidak tamak terhadap harta pada siswa kelas VIII tahun ajaran 2017/2018 di MTs N 34 Jakarta. dengan kata lain hipotesis penelitian ini diterima
