    Get PDF

Development of an Embedded Myokinetic Prosthetic Hand Controller

The quest for an intuitive and physiologically appropriate human machine interface for the control of dexterous prostheses is far from being completed. In the last decade, much effort has been dedicated to explore innovative control strategies based on the electrical signals generated by the muscles during contraction. In contrast, a novel approach, dubbed myokinetic interface, derives the control signals from the localization of multiple magnetic markers (MMs) directly implanted into the residual muscles of the amputee. Building on this idea, here we present an embedded system based on 32 magnetic field sensors and a real time computation platform. We demonstrate that the platform can simultaneously localize in real-time up to five MMs in an anatomically relevant workspace. The system proved highly linear (R2 = 0.99) and precise (1% repeatability), yet exhibiting short computation times (4 ms) and limited cross talk errors (10% the mean stroke of the magnets). Compared to a previous PC implementation, the system exhibited similar precision and accuracy, while being ~75% faster. These results proved for the first time the viability of using an embedded system for magnet localization. They also suggest that, by using an adequate number of sensors, it is possible to increase the number of simultaneously tracked MMs while introducing delays that are not perceivable by the human operator. This could allow to control more degrees of freedom than those controllable with current technologies

Assessment of non linear bond laws for NSM systems in concrete elements

    Get PDF
In this paper the numerical FEM model developed to simulate the behaviour of the NSM strengthening system for concrete elements is presented. The plane model introduces the non linear bond law of the system by an interface element between the composite reinforcement and the concrete considered linear. The results of two experimental programs are analysed and used to calibrate the parameters of the bond shear-slip relationship by means the numerical model. The procedure is based on the inverse analysis of the experimental data in order to have the better fitting of the global pull-out load-displacement curves.(undefined

Assessment of nonlinear bond laws for near-surface-mounted systems in concrete elements

This paper presents a numerical plane Finite Element (FE) Model for use in simulating the behaviour of different types of Near Surface Mounted (NSM) Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) strengthening systems for concrete elements. Based on a nonlinear bond law for simulating the behaviour of the FRP reinforcement-adhesive-concrete interface, the model employs an interface element between the NSM FRP reinforcement and the concrete. The results of two different experimental programs, both dealing with 'bond tests' but with distinct set-ups, are briefly summarised and analysed. The main objective of this research is to assess the values of the parameters that define the nonlinear bond laws for each type of FRP reinforcement tested. This assessment was accomplished by inverse analysis, fitting numerically the pullout load–displacement curves that were experimentally recorded. The effect of bond length on different types of NSM FRP reinforcement is assessed. Finally, the bond behaviour in the transverse plane is examined too.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT

Memorie transculturali: estetica contemporanea e critica postcoloniale

[English]:This volume analyses the several ways in which transcultural memory is articulated in contemporary artistic practices connected to the experiences of migration, exile, diaspora and transnationalization. This task is carried out through examples of innovative curatorial and museum projects, which suggest alternative understandings of practices of memorializing and archiving the past, highlighting its relation with contemporaneity and its postcolonial configuration. In the following analysis, the several ‘case-studies’ are a result of independent and collaborative research (the first was conceived during the PhD course in Cultural and Postcolonial Studies of the Anglophone World, at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, while the latter was carried out in the context of the European project MeLa*, which deals with the reconsideration of the European museums and archives in the era of global migrations). The two kinds of research are related because they suggest a critical reflection on the complex and stratified interconnections among the cultural, geographic, historic, economic and social contexts of Europe and the contemporary World, paying keen attention to the Mediterranean area and recognizing the global processes of migration and their historic development as essential tools for understanding the present age

[English]: The volume Matriarchive of the Mediterranean. This volume collects papers by Silvana Carotenuto, Lidia Curti and Giuliana Cacciapuoti, along with the interviews conducted by the researchers with the female artists: Filomena Rusciano, Oni Wong, Alessandra Cianelli, PalĂč de Andrare and Dacia Manto

Tracking the dynamics of power sources and sinks during the martensitic transformation of a Cu-Al-Ni single crystal

We have tracked the dynamics of the martensitic transformation in a Cu-Al-Ni single crystal by means of acoustic emission and infrared imaging techniques. A Fourier equation-based post-processing of temperature maps has enabled us to reveal the inhomogeneous and discontinuous character of heat power sources and sinks during the transiton. A good correlation between the dynamics of thermal and mechanical energy release has been evidenced. It has also been shown that the merging of martensitic interfaces results in an enhanced heat absorptio
