    INTRODUCING TRANSPARENT WEB CACHING IN A LOCAL AREA NETWORK

    The term \u27transparent web caching\u27 refers to cache technology in which web traffic is automatically intercepted and redirected toward one or more cache servers. The redirection of web data can be accomplished using L4 switches or routers. Being completely transparent to the user (no browser configuration is required) the service can be easily implemented and turns out to be scalable and fail-safe. This work presents the results of our experimental use of transparent caching technology in a simple network environment. We focus on the impact this technique could have on network performance, with all its benefits and problems, as well as its effects on end users. The analysis is based on data gathered in an operative network during a two-month period

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is known from recent studies that more than 90% of human multi-exon genes are subject to Alternative Splicing (AS), a key molecular mechanism in which multiple transcripts may be generated from a single gene. It is widely recognized that a breakdown in AS mechanisms plays an important role in cellular differentiation and pathologies. Polymerase Chain Reactions, microarrays and sequencing technologies have been applied to the study of transcript diversity arising from alternative expression. Last generation Affymetrix GeneChip Human Exon 1.0 ST Arrays offer a more detailed view of the gene expression profile providing information on the AS patterns. The exon array technology, with more than five million data points, can detect approximately one million exons, and it allows performing analyses at both gene and exon level. In this paper we describe BEAT, an integrated user-friendly bioinformatics framework to store, analyze and visualize exon arrays datasets. It combines a data warehouse approach with some rigorous statistical methods for assessing the AS of genes involved in diseases. Meta statistics are proposed as a novel approach to explore the analysis results. BEAT is available at <url>http://beat.ba.itb.cnr.it</url>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>BEAT is a web tool which allows uploading and analyzing exon array datasets using standard statistical methods and an easy-to-use graphical web front-end. BEAT has been tested on a dataset with 173 samples and tuned using new datasets of exon array experiments from 28 colorectal cancer and 26 renal cell cancer samples produced at the Medical Genetics Unit of IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza.</p> <p>To highlight all possible AS events, alternative names, accession Ids, Gene Ontology terms and biochemical pathways annotations are integrated with exon and gene level expression plots. The user can customize the results choosing custom thresholds for the statistical parameters and exploiting the available clinical data of the samples for a multivariate AS analysis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Despite exon array chips being widely used for transcriptomics studies, there is a lack of analysis tools offering advanced statistical features and requiring no programming knowledge. BEAT provides a user-friendly platform for a comprehensive study of AS events in human diseases, displaying the analysis results with easily interpretable and interactive tables and graphics.</p

    The inclusive J/ψ\psi nuclear modification factor (RAAR_{AA}) in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76TeV has been measured by ALICE as a function of centrality in the e+e−e^+e^- decay channel at mid-rapidity |y| < 0.8 and as a function of centrality, transverse momentum and rapidity in the ÎŒ+Ό−\mu^+\mu^- decay channel at forward-rapidity 2.5 < y < 4.The J/ψ\psi yields measured in Pb-Pb are suppressed compared to those in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions.The RAAR_{AA} integrated over a centrality range corresponding to 90% of the inelastic Pb-Pb cross section is 0.72 +- 0.06 (stat.) +- 0.10 (syst.) at mid-rapidity and 0.57 +- 0.01 (stat.) +- 0.09 (syst.) at forward-rapidity.     Correlations induced by quantum statistics are sensitive to the spatio-temporal extent as well as dynamics of particle emitting sources in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, such correlations can be used to search for the presence of a coherent component of pion production. Two and three-pion correlations of same and mixed-charge are measured at low relative momentum to estimate the coherent fraction of charged pions in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.76 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The genuine three-pion quantum statistics correlation is found to be suppressed relative to the two-pion correlation based on the assumption of fully chaotic pion emission.The suppression is observed to decrease with triplet momentum.     Measurement of charged jet suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

    A measurement of the transverse momentum spectra of jets in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN−−−√=2.76 TeV is reported. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-kT jet algorithm with jet resolution parameters R of 0.2 and 0.3 in pseudo-rapidity |η|<0.5. The transverse momentum pT of charged particles is measured down to 0.15 GeV/c which gives access to the low pT fragments of the jet. Jets found in heavy-ion collisions are corrected event-by-event for average background density and on an inclusive basis (via unfolding) for residual background fluctuations and detector effects. A strong suppression of jet production in central events with respect to peripheral events is observed. The suppression is found to be similar to the suppression of charged hadrons, which suggests that substantial energy is radiated at angles larger than the jet resolution parameter R=0.3 considered in the analysis. The fragmentation bias introduced by selecting jets with a high pT leading particle, which rejects jets with a soft fragmentation pattern, has a similar effect on the jet yield for central and peripheral events. The ratio of jet spectra with R=0.2 and R=0.3 is found to be similar in Pb-Pb and simulated PYTHIA pp events, indicating no strong broadening of the radial jet structure in the reconstructed jets with R<0.3.
