    The evolutionarily stable strategy, animal contests, parasitoids, pest control and sociality

    The evolutionarily stable strategy, ESS, concept was first used in biology to understand sex ratio bias and, shortly afterwards, to explore the logic of contests over essential and indivisible resources. ESS models formed the basis of much subsequent research on animal behaviour and placed game-theoretic thinking firmly within the behavioural ecology approach. Among behavioural ecologists studying parasitoids, it was those asking questions about the evolution of sex ratios who first made extensive use of the game-theoretic approach. A later growth of interest in parasitoid host defence and fighting behaviour made use of these tractable study species to explore contests and their connections to further aspects of life-history evolution plus some pest control applications. Our aims are to (i) introduce the topic of contests, which are engaged in by a very wide array of animal taxa, and the importance, both historical and conceptual, of the game-theoretic approach to their study, and (ii) review recent studies of parasitoid contests, including those that have considered the context of social evolution and the performance of parasitoids as agents of biological control. We consider that game-theoretic models are eminently testable and applicable and will likely endure as valuable tools in studies of parasitoid biology.This article is part of the theme issue 'Half a century of evolutionary games: a synthesis of theory, application and future directions'.Peer reviewe

    Subjective and objective components of resource value additively increase aggression in parasitoid contests

    Two major categories of factors are predicted to influence behaviour in dyadic contests; differences in the abilities of the contestants to acquire and retain resources (resource holding potential), and the value of the contested resource (resource value, RV; which comprises objective and subjective components). Recent studies indicate that subjective components affect contest behaviour in several animal taxa but few have simultaneously investigated objective RV components. We find that both an objective (host size) and a subjective (contestant age) component of RV affect contest intensity in the parasitoid wasp Goniozus legneri. These additively influence aggressiveness, with a larger effect from the subjective component than the objective component. The greater influence of subjective RV adds weight to the recent surge of recognition of this RV component's importance in contest behaviour

    Estimating Population Abundance of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Coastal Waters of Palm Beach County, Southeastern Florida

    Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are frequently observed in the coastal waters of Palm Beach County, Florida. In this study, mark -recapture surveys using photo-identification tech-niques were used to estimate population abun-dance of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in this area for the first time. Surveys were conducted for 11 years, between 2005 and 2016, during which 384 individuals were identified and catalogued from distinctive nicks and notches on their dorsal fins. Each marked individual was documented an aver-age of 2.4 times (range 1 to 19). Low resighting rates and a constant rate of encounter with pre-viously unmarked individuals suggest that the population is open, comprising both residents and transients. The Jolly-Seber method was used to estimate population abundance. Estimates of abundance varied greatly in time with an overall average of 264 individuals and a 95% confidence interval of 162 to 366 (SE = 51.3), indicating a variable population size. As threats in the region continue to rise, such as overfishing, toxic algae blooms, and environmental pollutants, this under-studied population may be vulnerable to decline. A better understanding of the population dynam-ics could facilitate more effective conservation action.Peer reviewe

    How many cooperators are too many? Foundress number, reproduction and sex ratio in a quasi-social parasitoid

    In the parasitoid genus Sclerodermus, multiple foundresses produce and care for communal broods on large hosts, which can lead to greater reproductive success for group members than attempting to reproduce alone. We explore the consequences of foundress group size on the benefits of cooperative brooding and on brood sex ratios by providing groups of 10-55 foundresses with a single host and no alternative reproductive options. Within this range, increasing foundress group size leads to increasingly common failure in brood production and diminished per capita success. Group production of adult offspring declines once foundress number reaches around 25. Brood failure is usually at the early developmental stages, and current evidence suggests that there may be competition among foundresses for oviposition sites, possibly involving reproductive dominance and ovicide, which also delays initial brood production. Once broods become established, their rate of development is enhanced by large foundress numbers. The sex ratios of broods are very strongly female biased, irrespective of the foundress number. As this bias is not easily explained by standard models of local mate competition or by a recent model of local resource enhancement, we suggest an explanation based on control of sex allocation by a minority of dominant foundresses, which monopolise the production of adult males.Peer reviewe

    Action threshold development in cabbage pest management using synthetic and botanical insecticides

    As synthetic insecticides can have environmentally detrimental side effects, it is desirable to limit their use while still achieving good marketable yield. One approach is to apply pesticides only when needed, as determined by an action threshold (AT), defined as the number of pests per crop plant or damage intensity at which application is recommended. Another approach is to adopt alternative pesticides, such as botanical biopesticides, which can also be applied according to ATs. Here, ATs are developed in cabbage pest management using both approaches against the moths Plutella xylostella (L.), Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and Spodoptera litura (F.) and the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae (L.). Action thresholds were derived using fixed spraying regimes for the synthetic insecticides (imidacloprid and Voliam Flexi) and for azadirachtin, a neem-derived botanical. For synthetics, derived ATs are 40 individuals per plant for B. brassicae, 0.3 larvae for P. xylostella and 0.2 medium-sized larvae for H. armigera and for S. litura. For H. armigera and S. litura, negative relationships between marketable yield and pest were found when larvae were medium or large sized, but not when larvae were small. Compared to synthetics, benefits of using neem formulations include higher action thresholds against P. xylostella (0.6/plant) and H. armigera (0.4/plant) and an oviposition deterrent effect against S. litura. Overall, botanical insecticides were effective alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Although regional limits may apply to the accuracy of any ATs derived, the approach used towards their establishment is simple and transferable to other agricultural regions and crops

    Partially-constrained sex allocation and the indirect effects of assisted reproductive technologies on the human sex ratio

    Infertility affects around 15% of human couples and in many countries approximately 1–4% of babies are born following Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Several ART techniques are used and these differentially affect the sex ratio of offspring successfully produced. These direct effects on sex ratio also have the potential to influence, indirectly, the sex ratios of offspring born to untreated couples. This is of concern because human sex ratio bias may adversely affect public health. Here the extent of indirect effects of ART that could operate, via Fisherian frequency-dependent natural selection, on the progeny sex ratio of unassisted members of a population is heuristically modelled. Given the degrees to which ART techniques bias sex ratios directly, it is predicted that well over 20% of couples would have to reproduce via ART for there to be any discernible effect on the sex ratios produced, in response, by the remainder of the population. This value is greater than the estimated prevalence of infertility problems among human couples. It is concluded that providing ART to couples with fertility problems does not currently generate significant ethical issues or public health concern in terms of indirect effects on the offspring sex ratios of untreated couples

    Phase fluctuations in superconductors: from Galilean invariant to quantum XY models

    We analyze the corrections to the superfluid density due to phase fluctuations within both a continuum and a lattice model for ss- and d-wave superconductors. We expand the phase-only action beyond the Gaussian level and compare our results with the quantum XY model both in the quantum and in the classical regime. We find new dynamic anharmonic vertices, absent in the quantum XY model, which are responsible for the vanishing of the correction to the superfluid density at zero temperature in a continuum (Galilean invariant) model. Moreover the phase-fluctuation effects are reduced with respect to the XY model by a factor at least of order 1/(kFξ0)21/(k_F\xi_0)^2.Comment: 4 pages; shorter version, accepted for publication on Phys.     Thiamethoxam exposure deregulates short ORF gene expression in the honey bee and compromises immune response to bacteria

    © 2021, The Author(s). Maximizing crop yields relies on the use of agrochemicals to control insect pests. One of the most widely used classes of insecticides are neonicotinoids that interfere with signalling of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, but these can also disrupt crop-pollination services provided by bees. Here, we analysed whether chronic low dose long-term exposure to the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam alters gene expression and alternative splicing in brains of Africanized honey bees, Apis mellifera, as adaptation to altered neuronal signalling. We find differentially regulated genes that show concentration-dependent responses to thiamethoxam, but no changes in alternative splicing. Most differentially expressed genes have no annotated function but encode short Open Reading Frames, a characteristic feature of anti-microbial peptides. As this suggested that immune responses may be compromised by thiamethoxam exposure, we tested the impact of thiamethoxam on bee immunity by injecting bacteria. We show that intrinsically sub-lethal thiamethoxam exposure makes bees more vulnerable to normally non-pathogenic bacteria. Our findings imply a synergistic mechanism for the observed bee population declines that concern agriculturists, conservation ecologists and the public

    Operator renewal theory and mixing rates for dynamical systems with infinite measure

    We develop a theory of operator renewal sequences in the context of infinite ergodic theory. For large classes of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure, we determine the asymptotic behaviour of iterates LnL^n of the transfer operator. This was previously an intractable problem. Examples of systems covered by our results include (i) parabolic rational maps of the complex plane and (ii) (not necessarily Markovian) nonuniformly expanding interval maps with indifferent fixed points. In addition, we give a particularly simple proof of pointwise dual ergodicity (asymptotic behaviour of j=1nLj\sum_{j=1}^nL^j) for the class of systems under consideration. In certain situations, including Pomeau-Manneville intermittency maps, we obtain higher order expansions for LnL^n and rates of mixing.
