Consistency of Lambda-Lambda hypernuclear events
Highlights of Lambda-Lambda emulsion events are briefly reviewed. Given three
accepted events, shell-model predictions based on p-shell Lambda hypernuclear
spectroscopic studies are shown to reproduce the Lambda-Lambda (LL) binding
energies of LL10Be and LL13B in terms of the LL binding energy of LL6He.
Predictions for other species offer judgement on several alternative
assignments of the LL13B KEK-E176 event, and on the assignments LL11Be and
LL12Be suggested recently for the KEK-E373 HIDA event. The predictions of the
shell model, spanning a wide range of A values, are compared with those of

Remarks on the Scalar Graviton Decoupling and Consistency of Horava Gravity
Recently Horava proposed a renormalizable gravity theory with higher
derivatives by abandoning the Lorenz invariance in UV. But there have been
confusions regarding the extra scalar graviton mode and the consistency of the
Horava model. I reconsider these problems and show that, in the Minkowski
vacuum background, the scalar graviton mode can be consistency decoupled from
the usual tensor graviton modes by imposing the (local) Hamiltonian as well as

Post-Training Dephosphorylation of eEF-2 Promotes Protein Synthesis for Memory Consolidation
Memory consolidation, which converts acquired information into long-term storage, is new protein synthesis-dependent. As protein synthesis is a dynamic process that is under the control of multiple translational mechanisms, however, it is still elusive how these mechanisms are recruited in response to learning for memory consolidation. Here we found that eukaryotic elongation factor-2 (eEF-2) was dramatically dephosphorylated within 0.5ā2 hr in the hippocampus and amygdala of mice following training in a fear-conditioning test, whereas genome-wide microarrays did not reveal any significant change in the expression level of the mRNAs for translational machineries or their related molecules. Moreover, blockade of NMDA receptors with MK-801 immediately following the training significantly impeded both the post-training eEF-2 dephosphorylation and memory retention. Notably, with an elegant sophisticated transgenic strategy, we demonstrated that hippocampus-specific overexpression of eEF-2 kinase, a kinase that specifically phosphorylates and hence inactivates eEF-2, significantly inhibited protein synthesis in the hippocampus, and this effects was more robust during an āongoingā protein synthesis process. As a result, late phase long-term potentiation (L-LTP) in the hippocampus and long-term hippocampus-dependent memory in the mice were significantly impaired, whereas short-term memory and long-term hippocampus-independent memory remained intact. These results reveal a novel translational underpinning for protein synthesis pertinent to memory consolidation in the mammalian brain.</p
Recurrent Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding from Congenital Arteriovenous Malformation in the Terminal Ileum Mimicking Intestinal Varicosis: A Case Report
We report on an exceptional vascular cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. A 30-yr-old man was admitted because of recurrent hematochezia. Colonoscopy showed circumferential, erythematous, and nodular vascular distensions with hematocystic spots in the terminal ileum resembling varicosis and subsequent computed tomography with 3-dimensional angiographic reconstruction revealed a vascular architecture around the terminal ileum. No other potential source of bleeding was identified. The patient was treated by ileocecectomy and the final diagnosis was of an arteriovenous malformation confined to the terminal ileum. He has been followed-up without a further hemorrhagic episode
Deliquescence of NaClāNaNO(3), KNO(3)āNaNO(3), and NaClāKNO(3 )salt mixtures from 90 to 120Ā°C
We conducted reversed deliquescence experiments in saturated NaClāNaNO(3)āH(2)O, KNO(3)āNaNO(3)āH(2)O, and NaClāKNO(3)āH(2)O systems from 90 to 120Ā°C as a function of relative humidity and solution composition. NaCl, NaNO(3), and KNO(3 )represent members of dust salt assemblages that are likely to deliquesce and form concentrated brines on high-level radioactive waste package surfaces in a repository environment at Yucca Mountain, NV. Discrepancy between model prediction and experiment can be as high as 8% for relative humidity and 50% for dissolved ion concentration. The discrepancy is attributed primarily to the use of 25Ā°C models for ClāNO(3 )and KāNO(3 )ion interactions in the current Yucca Mountain Project high-temperature Pitzer model to describe the nonideal behavior of these highly concentrated solutions
Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points Assessment as a Tool to Respond to Emerging Infectious Disease Outbreaks
Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) strain H5N1 has had direct and indirect economic impacts arising from direct mortality and control programmes in over 50 countries reporting poultry outbreaks. HPAI H5N1 is now reported as the most widespread and expensive zoonotic disease recorded and continues to pose a global health threat. The aim of this research was to assess the potential of utilising Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) assessments in providing a framework for a rapid response to emerging infectious disease outbreaks. This novel approach applies a scientific process, widely used in food production systems, to assess risks related to a specific emerging health threat within a known zoonotic disease hotspot. We conducted a HACCP assessment for HPAI viruses within Vietnamās domestic poultry trade and relate our findings to the existing literature. Our HACCP assessment identified poultry flock isolation, transportation, slaughter, preparation and consumption as critical control points for Vietnamās domestic poultry trade. Introduction of the preventative measures highlighted through this HACCP evaluation would reduce the risks posed by HPAI viruses and pressure on the national economy. We conclude that this HACCP assessment provides compelling evidence for the future potential that HACCP analyses could play in initiating a rapid response to emerging infectious diseases
Cardiovascular risks of chemo-immunotherapy for lung cancer: A population-based cohort study.
Despite their proven efficacy for treating lung cancer, the cardiovascular risks associated with programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors and their combinations with chemotherapy (chemo-immunotherapy) are unclear. This study aimed to investigate these associations. This retrospective cohort study included Hong Kong patients with lung cancer receiving PD-1 inhibitors during 2013-2021. Patients with non-concurrent use of PD-1 inhibitors and chemotherapy, any use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors or other immunotherapy agents, and those with prior stroke, heart failure, or myocardial infarction were excluded. PD-1 inhibitors and chemo-immunotherapy were compared for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), a composite of cardiovascular mortality, heart failure, stroke, and myocardial infarction. All patients were followed up until the end of 2021. Inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to balance covariates between the two treatment groups. In total, 713 patients (333 PD-1 inhibitors users and 380 chemo-immunotherapy users) were analysed. Over a mean follow-up of 1.4Ā Ā±Ā 1.3Ā years, 24 had MACE, with an observed incidence of 2.8 [1.6-4.8] events per 100 person-year for patients on PD-1 inhibitors, and 2.1 [1.2-3.8] per 100 person-year for patients on chemo-immunotherapy. No significant between-group difference in MACE incidence was observed (log-rank pĀ =Ā 0.641). The cardiovascular risks associated with PD-1 inhibitors and chemo-immunotherapy may not be significantly different amongst patients with lung cancer.
