    Heterosis for flower and fruit traits in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)

    A study was conducted in tomato using an 8 × 8 diallel set excluding reciprocals to quantify the magnitude of heterosis for yield and its five yield components: number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits set per cluster, fruit length, fruit width, fruit weight and fruit yield per plant. Seven accessions and one locally approved variety were crossed in half diallel fashion and the resulting F1 progeny along with their parents were evaluated in a 6 × 6 Tripple Lattice Design at Agricultural Research Institute, Mingora (NWFP), Pakistan during 2007 - 2008 crop season. Highly significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the studied traits. Highly significant heterosis of positive nature was foundfor flowers per cluster (53.1 and 37.2%), fruits per cluster (38.9%), fruit length (32.7 and 15.5%), fruit weight (48.7 and 45.0%) and yield per plant (34.9%) over the mid and better parents, respectively. Positive significant heterosis was observed for flowers per cluster (7.4%), fruits per cluster (10.0 and 10.0%), fruit length (8.9%), fruit width (8.7 and 7.9%), fruit weight (14.3 and 12.5%), yield per plant (24%) over the mid and better parents, respectively. Four hybrids possessed significantly usefulheterobeltiosis for fruit weight. Three single cross hybrids and four of the parental genotypes were selected for use in subsequent tomato breeding programmes

    Environmental sustainability and supply resillience of cobalt

    Cobalt (Co) is an essential metal for the development of energy-transition technologies, decarbonising transportation, achieving several sustainable development goals, and facilitating a future net zero transition. However, the supply of Co is prone to severe fluctuation, disruption, and price instabilities. This review aims to identify the future evolution of Co supply through technologically resilient and environmentally sustainable pathways. The work shows that advances in both primary and secondary sources, Co mining methods and recycling systems are yet to be fully optimised. Moreover, responsible sourcing from both large mines and small artisanal mines will be necessary for a resilient Co supply. Regulatory approaches may increase transparency, support local mining communities, and improve secondary Co recovery. Novel Co supply options, such as deep-sea mining and bio-mining of tailings, are associated with major techno-economic and environmental issues. However, a circular economy, keeping Co in the economic loop for as long as possible, is yet to be optimised at both regional and global scales. To achieve environmental sustainability of Co, economic incentives, regulatory push, and improved public perception are required to drive product innovation and design for circularity. Although the complexity of Co recycling, due to lack of standardisation of design and chemistry in batteries, is an impediment, a sustainable net zero transition using Co will only be possible if a reliable primary supply and a circular secondary supply are establishe

    Environmental life cycle assessment of wire arc additively manufactured steel structural components

    Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) enables the production of structural components with topologically optimised geometries thus leading to significant self-weight reductions for a given load-carrying capacity. A common question arises regarding the environmental performance of WAAM structural components in comparison with conventional steel structural components. Thus, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment has been conducted where the environmental impact of producing a topologically optimised WAAM steel beam is compared with that of producing a conventional hot-rolled steel I-beam. The beams are 2 m long, simply-supported and loaded vertically at midspan. The impact of using either carbon steel or stainless steel is investigated. The results demonstrate that the carbon steel and stainless steel WAAM beams have 7% and 24%, respectively, lower climate change impact than the corresponding I-beams. It is concluded that WAAM can lead to lower CO2-eq. emissions than conventional hot-rolling, provided that mass reductions of the order of 50% (which are readily attainable) can be achieved by employing WAAM in conjunction with, for instance, topology optimisation. Furthermore, it is shown that the shielding gas contributes greatly to the environmental impact of WAAM, and that, by using higher deposition rates or by utilising renewable energy sources, the impact of WAAM can be reduced by more than 30%

    Maternal deaths in Pakistan : intersection of gender, class and social exclusion.

    Background: A key aim of countries with high maternal mortality rates is to increase availability of competent maternal health care during pregnancy and childbirth. Yet, despite significant investment, countries with the highest burdens have not reduced their rates to the expected levels. We argue, taking Pakistan as a case study, that improving physical availability of services is necessary but not sufficient for reducing maternal mortality because gender inequities interact with caste and poverty to socially exclude certain groups of women from health services that are otherwise physically available. Methods: Using a critical ethnographic approach, two case studies of women who died during childbirth were pieced together from information gathered during the first six months of fieldwork in a village in Northern Punjab, Pakistan. Findings: Shida did not receive the necessary medical care because her heavily indebted family could not afford it. Zainab, a victim of domestic violence, did not receive any medical care because her martial family could not afford it, nor did they think she deserved it. Both women belonged to lower caste households, which are materially poor households and socially constructed as inferior. Conclusions: The stories of Shida and Zainab illustrate how a rigidly structured caste hierarchy, the gendered devaluing of females, and the reinforced lack of control that many impoverished women experience conspire to keep women from lifesaving health services that are physically available and should be at their disposal

From the high-energy tail of PL, we determine the electron temperature (Te) of the hot electrons. TheTevariation can be explained by a model in which the longitudinal optical (LO)-phonon emission is the dominant energy relaxation process.     Truncating mutations in the Wilson disease gene ATP7B are associated with very low serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activity and an early onset of Wilson disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mutations in the gene ATP7B cause Wilson disease, a copper storage disorder with a high phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity. We aimed to evaluate whether 'severe' protein-truncating ATP7B mutations (SMs) are associated with low serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activities and an early age of onset when compared to missense mutations (MMs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The clinical phenotype of 59 genetically confirmed WD patients was analyzed retrospectively. Serum ceruloplasmin was measured by its oxidase activity with <it>o</it>-dianisidine dihydrochloride as substrate and immunologically.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty-nine patients had two MMs, 15 had the genotype SM/MM, and 5 patients had two SMs on their ATP7B alleles. Enzymatic and immunologic serum ceruloplasmin levels differed significantly between the three groups (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01, respectively). The lowest levels were measured in patients with two SMs (0.0 U/L; IQR, 0.0-0.0 U/L and 0.02 g/L; IQR, 0.01-0.02 g/L, respectively) and the highest in patients with two MMs (17.8 U/L; IQR, 5.8-35.1 U/L and 0.11 g/L; IQR,0.10-0.17 g/L, respectively). The age of onset was also significantly different between the three patient groups (P < 0.05), with SM/SM patients showing the earliest onset (13 years; IQR, 9-13 years) and patients with two MMs showing the latest onset (22 years; IQR, 14-27 years). By ROC curve analysis a ceruloplasmin oxidase level ≤ 5 U/L can predict the presence of at least one SM with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 79.5%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In our German study cohort truncating ATP7B mutations were associated with lower ceruloplasmin serum oxidase levels and an earlier age of onset when compared to MMs. Measurement of serum ceruloplasmin oxidase might help to predict presence of truncating ATP7B mutations and might facilitate the mutation analysis.</p

    The Changes in Maternal Mortality in 1000 Counties in Mid-Western China by a Government-Initiated Intervention

    BACKGROUND: Since 2000, the Chinese government has implemented an intervention program to reduce maternal mortality and eliminate neonatal tetanus in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals 5. To assess the effectiveness of this intervention program, we analyzed the level, trend and reasons defining the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in the 1,000 priority counties before and after implementation of the intervention between 1999 and 2007. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The data was obtained from the National Maternal and Child Health Routine Reporting System. The intervention included providing basic and emergency obstetric equipment and supplies to local medical hospitals, and also included providing professional training to local obstetric doctors, development of obstetric emergency centers and "green channel" express referral networks, reducing or waiving the cost of hospital delivery, and conducting community health education. Based on the initiation time of the intervention and the level of poverty, 1,000 counties, containing a total population of 300 million, were categorized into three groups. MMR significantly decreased by about 50%, with an average reduction rate of 9.24%, 16.06%, and 18.61% per year in the three county groups, respectively. The hospital delivery rate significantly increased. Obstetric hemorrhage was the leading cause of maternal deaths and significantly declined, with an average decrease in the MMR of 11.25%, 18.03%, and 24.90% per year, respectively. The magnitude of the MMR, the average reduction rate of the MMR, and the occurrence of the leading causes of death were closely associated with the percentage of poverty. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The intervention program implemented by the Chinese government has significantly reduced the MMR in mid-western China, suggesting that well-targeted interventions could be an efficient strategy to reducing MMR in resource-poor areas. Reduction of the MMR not only depends on conducting proven interventions, but also relies on economic development in rural areas with a high burden of maternal death
