Combined shear/compression structural testing of asymmetric sandwich structures
Asymmetric sandwich technology can be applied in the design of lightweight, non-pressurized aeronautical structures such as those of helicopters. A test rig of asymmetric sandwich structures subjected to compression/shear loads was designed, validated, and set up. It conforms to the standard certification procedure for composite aeronautical structures set out in the âtest pyramidâ, a multiscale approach. The static tests until failure showed asymmetric sandwich structures to be extremely resistant, which, in the case of the tested specimen shape, were characterized by the absence of buckling and failure compressive strains up to 10,000 ÎŒ strains. Specimens impacted with perforation damage were also tested, enabling the original phenomenon of crack propagation to be observed step-by-step. The results of the completed tests thus enable the concept to be validated, and justify the possibility of creating a much larger machine to overcome the drawbacks linked to the use of small specimens
Guiding the Way to Gamma-Ray Sources: X-ray Studies of Supernova Remnants
Supernova remnants have long been suggested as a class of potential
counterparts to unidentified gamma-ray sources. The mechanisms by which such
gamma-rays can arise may include emission from a pulsar associated with a
remnant, or a variety of processes associated with energetic particles
accelerated by the SNR shock. Imaging and spectral observations in the X-ray
band can be used to identify properties of the remnants that lead to gamma-ray
emission, including the presence of pulsar-driven nebulae, nonthermal X-ray
emission from the SNR shells, and the interaction of SNRs with dense

Depositional environment and apparent age of the Fauske carbonate conglomerate, North Norwegian Caledonides
The Fauske conglomerate represents a rather rare case of a monomict carbonate conglomerate in the Late Neoproterozoic to Silurian, lithostratigraphic successionsof the Norwegian Caledonides. Lithological varieties of this conglomerate unit from the Lovgavlen quarry have a highly decorative quality and are well known in both domestic and international markets under trading names such as 'Norwegian Rose', 'Jaune Rose', 'Norwegian Green', 'Antique Fonce' and 'Hermelin'. The Fauske conglomerate is a 60m-thick unit which rests on either dark grey ('blue') calcite marbles or white dolomite marbles. The latter are jointed and fragmented, and also appear as sedimentary collapse-breccia and debris where they are in direct contact with the conglomerate. Although the Fauske conglomerate has been involved in two main pulses of Caledonian tectonic deformation, which produced an early, syn-metamorphic flattening of the clasts and a later folding or rotation of clasts into a spaced cleavage, the overall sedimentary features are still remarkably well preserved.
The Fauske conglomerate unit consists of 25 beds (5 cm to 3 metres thick) comprising landslide, carbonate debris and carbonate breccia-conglomero-breccias-greywacke lithofacies. Blocks, fragments, cobbles, pebbles and smaller clasts are mainly of white dolostone and pink, beige, white and 'blue' calcite marbles. The matrix has a granoblastic texture and similar range in lithology with variable amounts of quartz, fuchsite, sericite, muscovite and chlorite. Within the unit, an upward fining of the clasts is followed by the gradual development of calcareous greywacke layers which show both cross bedding and channelling. The depositional model involves: (i) a locally developed, tectonically unstable carbonate shelf-margin, (ii) a temporary lowering o sea level, (iii) formation of a high-relief, shore-to-basin fault scarp followed by (iv) the development of a channel, with (v) subsequent, long-distance transport of clasts of pink carbonates from the continent-basin margin,w hich were (vi) redeposited together with a carbonate debris (white dolomite and 'blue' calcite marbles) on the tectonically fragmenting edge of a carbonate shelf. Both matrix and pebbles show a similar range in isotopic values: -1.9 to +0.6 per mil (vs. PDB) for 13Ccarb and 0.70896 to 0.70946 for 87Sr/86Sr. The least altered 87Sr/86Sr (0.70896) isotopic value plotted on the calibration curve is consistent with a seawater composition corresponding to ages of 470-475, 505-510 and 520, whereas the least altered 13C carb (-0.6 per mil) value matches only 520 Ma
Playing safe: Assessing the risk of sexual abuse to elite child athletes
Young athletes frequently suffer from being seen as athletes first and children second. This has consequences for their legal, civil and human rights as children (Kelly et al., 1995) and for the way in which sport organisations choose to intervene on their behalf to protect them from physical, psychological and sexual abuses (Brackenridge, 1994). Sport careers peak at different ages depending on the sport: in some, children as young as 12 or 13 may reach the highest levels of competitive performance; in others, full maturity as an athlete may come late into adulthood or even middle age. Recognition of this variation has given rise to the concept of âsport ageâ (Kirby, 1986) referring to sport-specific athlete development. This concept is of significance in helping to identify the developmental process in terms of athletic, rather than chronological, maturity. The risk of sexual abuse in sport, formerly ignored or denied, has now been documented in a number of studies, using both quantitative and qualitative methods (Kirby & Greaves, 1996; Brackenridge, 1997; Volkwein, 1996). Drawing on data from these studies and from the previous work on sport age and athletic maturation, this paper proposes a possible means of identifying and assessing relative risk of sexual abuse to elite young athletes in selected sports. Chromatin-based, in cis and in trans regulatory rewiring underpins distinct oncogenic transcriptomes in multiple myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a genetically heterogeneous cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells (PC). Distinct myeloma transcriptome profiles are primarily driven by myeloma initiating events (MIE) and converge into a mutually exclusive overexpression of the CCND1 and CCND2 oncogenes. Here, with reference to their normal counterparts, we find that myeloma PC enhanced chromatin accessibility combined with paired transcriptome profiling can classify MIE-defined genetic subgroups. Across and within different MM genetic subgroups, we ascribe regulation of genes and pathways critical for myeloma biology to unique or shared, developmentally activated or de novo formed candidate enhancers. Such enhancers co-opt recruitment of existing transcription factors, which although not transcriptionally deregulated per se, organise aberrant gene regulatory networks that help identify myeloma cell dependencies with prognostic impact. Finally, we identify and validate the critical super-enhancer that regulates ectopic expression of CCND2 in a subset of patients with MM and in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
The African warlord revisited
To date, warlordism in Africa has been viewed solely negatively. This has come about, in part, because of the analytical lenses that have been used. Typically, warlordism has been examined at the state level; and behavioural traits, rather than definitionally necessary components, have been the focus. In effect, âwarlordâ has been confused with other violent actors. I suggest here a reconceptualisation âfrom belowâ, which takes into account variation in types of warlordism, and which allows for both positive and negative effects of warlordism on society and the state
Faking like a woman? Towards an interpretative theorization of sexual pleasure.
This article explores the possibility of developing a feminist approach to gendered and sexual embodiment which is rooted in the pragmatist/interactionist tradition derived from G.H. Mead, but which in turn develops this perspective by inflecting it through more recent feminist thinking. In so doing we seek to rebalance some of the rather abstract work on gender and embodiment by focusing on an instance of 'heterosexual' everyday/night life - the production of the female orgasm. Through engaging with feminist and interactionist work, we develop an approach to embodied sexual pleasure that emphasizes the sociality of sexual practices and of reflexive sexual selves. We argue that sexual practices and experiences must be understood in social context, taking account of the situatedness of sex as well as wider socio-cultural processes the production of sexual desire and sexual pleasure (or their non-production) always entails interpretive, interactional processes
The Cerenkov effect revisited: from swimming ducks to zero modes in gravitational analogs
We present an interdisciplinary review of the generalized Cerenkov emission
of radiation from uniformly moving sources in the different contexts of
classical electromagnetism, superfluid hydrodynamics, and classical
hydrodynamics. The details of each specific physical systems enter our theory
via the dispersion law of the excitations. A geometrical recipe to obtain the
emission patterns in both real and wavevector space from the geometrical shape
of the dispersion law is discussed and applied to a number of cases of current
experimental interest. Some consequences of these emission processes onto the
stability of condensed-matter analogs of gravitational systems are finally

There is no market for new antibiotics: this allows an open approach to research and development
There is an increasingly urgent need for new antibiotics, yet there is a significant and persistent economic problem when it comes to developing such medicines. The problem stems from the perceived need for a âmarketâ to drive commercial antibiotic development. In this article, we explore abandoning the market as a prerequisite for successful antibiotic research and development. Once one stops trying to fix a market model that has stopped functioning, one is free to carry out research and development (R&D) in ways that are more openly collaborative, a mechanism that has been demonstrably effective for the R&D underpinning the response to the COVID pandemic. New âopen sourceâ research models have great potential for the development of medicines for areas of public health where the traditional profit-driven model struggles to deliver. New financial initiatives, including major push/pull incentives, aimed at fixing the broken antibiotics market provide one possible means for funding an openly collaborative approach to drug development. We argue that now is therefore the time to evaluate, at scale, whether such methods can deliver new medicines through to patients, in a timely manner
