    Less is More: Non-renormalization Theorems from Lower Dimensional Superspace

    We discuss a new class of non-renormalization theorems in N=4 and N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory, obtained by using a superspace which makes a lower dimensional subgroup of the full supersymmetry manifest. Certain Wilson loops (and Wilson lines) belong to the chiral ring of the lower dimensional supersymmetry algebra, and their expectation values can be computed exactly.Comment: 8 pages, based on talk given by Z.     Design Patterns for Description-Driven Systems

    In data modelling, product information has most often been handled separately from process information. The integration of product and process models in a unified data model could provide the means by which information could be shared across an enterprise throughout the system lifecycle from design through to production. Recently attempts have been made to integrate these two separate views of systems through identifying common data models. This paper relates description-driven systems to multi-layer architectures and reveals where existing design patterns facilitate the integration of product and process models and where patterns are missing or where existing patterns require enrichment for this integration. It reports on the construction of a so-called description-driven system which integrates Product Data Management (PDM) and Workflow Management (WfM) data models through a common meta-model.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures.     Sociodemographic factors and patient perceptions are associated with attitudes to kidney transplantation among haemodialysis patients

    Background. Treatment decisions made by patients with chronic kidney disease are crucial in the renal transplantation process. These decisions are influenced, amongst other factors, by attitudes towards different treatment options, which are modulated by knowledge and perceptions about the disease and its treatment and many other subjective factors. Here we study the attitude of dialysis patients to renal transplantation and the association of sociodemographic characteristics, patient perceptions and experiences with this attitude. Methods. In a cross-sectional study, all patients from eight dialysis units in Budapest, Hungary, who were on haemodialysis for at least 3 months were approached to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Data collected from 459 patients younger than 70 years were analysed in this manuscript. Results. Mean age of the study population was 53 +/- 12 years, 54% were male and the prevalence of diabetes was 22%. Patients with positive attitude to renal transplantation were younger (51 +/- 11 versus 58 +/- 11 years), better educated, more likely to be employed (11% versus 4%) and had prior transplantation (15% versus 7%)(P < 0.05 for all). In a multivariate model, negative patient perceptions about transplantation, negative expectations about health outcomes after transplantation and the presence of fears about the transplant surgery were associated, in addition to incre- asing age, with unwillingness to consider transplantation. Conclusions. Negative attitudes to renal transplantation are associated with potentially modifiable factors. Based on this we suggest that it would be necessary to develop standardized, comprehensible patient information systems and personalized decision support to facilitate modality selection and to enable patients to make fully informed treatment decisions

    Authentication of Tokaj Wine (Hungaricum) with the Electronic Tongue and Near Infrared Spectroscopy

    Tokaj wines (Hungaricum) are botrytized wines acknowledged for the unique organoleptic properties bestowed by botrytized grape berries during production. Excluding these berries during wine production or manipulating the sugar content of low-grade wines to imitate high-grade wines are some recent suspicious activities that threaten the wine quality. Advanced methods such as spectroscopy and sensor-based devices have been lauded for rapid, reliable, and cost-effective analysis, but there has been no report of their application to monitor grape must concentrate adulteration in botrytized wines. The study aimed to develop models to rapidly discriminate lower grade Tokaj wines, "Forditas I" and "Forditas II," that were artificially adulterated with grape must concentrate to match the sugar content of high-grade Tokaj wines using an electronic tongue (e-tongue) and two near infrared spectrometers (NIRS). Data were evaluated with the following chemometrics: principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (LDA), partial least square regression (PLSR), and aquaphotomics (a novel approach). There was a noticeable pattern of separation in PCA for all three instruments and 100% classification of adulterated and nonadulterated wines in LDA using the e-tongue. Aquagrams from the aquaphotomics approach showed important water absorption bands capable of being markers of Tokaj wine quality. PLSR models showed coefficient of determination ((RCV)-C-2) of 0.98 (e-tongue), 0.97 (benchtop NIRS), 0.87 (handheld NIRS), and low root mean squared errors of cross-validation. All three instruments could discriminate, classify, and predict grape must concentrate adulteration in Tokaj with a high accuracy and low error. The methods can be applied for routine quality checks of botrytized wines.     The Spitzer-IRAC/MIPS Extragalactic survey (SIMES) in the South Ecliptic Pole field

    We present the Spitzer-IRAC/MIPS Extragalactic survey (SIMES) in the South Ecliptic Pole field. The large area covered (7.7 deg^2), together with one of the lowest Galactic cirrus emissions in the entire sky and a very extensive coverage by Spitzer, Herschel, Akari, and GALEX, make the SIMES field ideal for extragalactic studies. The elongated geometry of the SIMES area (≈4:1), allowing for significant cosmic variance reduction, further improves the quality of statistical studies in this field. Here we present the reduction and photometric measurements of the Spitzer/IRAC data. The survey reaches depths of 1.93 and 1.75 ÎŒJy (1σ) at 3.6 and 4.5 ÎŒm, respectively. We discuss the multiwavelength IRAC-based catalog, completed with optical, mid-, and far-IR observations. We detect 341,000 sources with F_(3.6”m) â©Ÿ3σ. Of these, 10% have an associated 24 ÎŒm counterpart, while 2.7% have an associated SPIRE source. We release the catalog through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive. Two scientific applications of these IRAC data are presented in this paper. First, we compute integral number counts at 3.6 ÎŒm. Second, we use the [3.6]–[4.5] color index to identify galaxy clusters at z > 1.3. We select 27 clusters in the full area, a result consistent with previous studies at similar depth

    Interoperability of potentially heterogeneous databases has been an ongoing research issue for a number of years in the database community. With the trend towards globalization of data location and data access and the consequent requirement for the coexistence of new data stores with legacy systems, the cooperation and data interchange between data repositories has become increasingly important. The emergence of the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) as a database independent representation for data offers a suitable mechanism for transporting data between repositories. This paper describes a research activity within a group at CERN (called CMS) towards identifying and implementing database serialization and deserialization methods that can be used to replicate or migrate objects across the network between CERN and worldwide centres using XML to serialize the contents of multiple objects resident in object-oriented databases.Comment: 14 pages 7 figure

    Correlational Analysis of Agronomic and Seed Quality Traits in Camelina sativa Doubled Haploid Lines under Rain-Fed Condition

    Camelina (Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz) is an emerging industrial crop from the Brassicaceae family, with its seed oil and cake being used for food, feed, and fuel applications. In this study, the relationships between economically important agronomic traits including seed yield (SY), days to maturity (DM), 1000-seed weight (TSW), seed protein content (PC), seed oil content (OC), and fatty acid composition in 136 doubled haploid (DH) camelina lines were investigated under rain-fed conditions in two consecutive years. There was prominent diversity among the studied DH lines for the agronomic traits such as seed yield, erucic acid, omega3, protein content, etc. Based on the Pearson correlation analysis of the data, SY was positively correlated with DM and OC, and negatively correlated with TSW, PC, and linolenic acid (C18:3) content. The positive relationships of the main characteristics, relevant to industrial applications, suggest the feasibility of developing new higher-yielding camelina cultivars with high seed oil content. The high seed yield of some camelina lines (DH044 and DH075) during the two growing seasons showed the potential of the lines. On the other hand, the contrasting genotypes for key traits in this study promised a favorable source to develop the superior breeding lines with higher seed yield and food/nonfood traits. Therefore, it can be concluded that the diversity of camelina DH lines traits is crucial for developing new cultivars. Furthermore, the present study reports some significant correlations among the DH lines, which may be useful for the current and future camelina breeding program

    HAT-P-49b: A 1.7 M_J Planet Transiting a Bright 1.5 M_S F-Star

    We report the discovery of the transiting extrasolar planet HAT-P-49b. The planet transits the bright (V = 10.3) slightly evolved F-star HD 340099 with a mass of 1.54M_S and a radius of 1.83 R_S. HAT-P-49b is orbiting one of the 25 brightest stars to host a transiting planet which makes this a favorable candidate for detailed follow-up. This system is an especially strong target for Rossiter- McLaughlin follow-up due to the fast rotation of the host star, 16 km/s. The planetary companion has a period of 2.6915 d, mass of 1.73 M_J and radius of 1.41 R_J. The planetary characteristics are consistent with that of a classical hot Jupiter but we note that this is the fourth most massive star to host a transiting planet with both M_p and R_p well determined.Comment: Accepted to the Astronomical Journa
