Isotopic Dependence of the Nuclear Caloric Curve

    Get PDF
The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of 124Sn and radioactive beams of 124La and 107Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (\Delta T \approx 0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publ. in Phys. Rev. Let

Beta-decay of "4"0Ti and "4"1Ti and implication for solar-neutrino detection

    No full text
The #beta#-decay of "4"0Ti and "4"1Ti was studied by measuring the #beta#-delayed proton- and #gamma#-emission. The half-lives for "4"0Ti and "4"1Ti were determined to be 54(2) and 82(3) ms, respectively. The experimental #beta#-decay strengths are compared with shell-model calculations and results from other measurements. The integrated Gamow-Teller strengths for "4"0Ti and "4"1Ti were found to be quenched, compared to the calculations, by factors of 0.79(3) and 0.93(3), respectively. Based on the experimental "4"0Ti #beta#-decay strength, the neutrino absorption cross-section and induced neutrino event rates for "4"0Ar were determined to be 14.3(3) x 10"-"4"3 cm"2 and 9.4#+-#0.2(stat.)_-_1_._6"+"1"."3(syst.) SNU, respectively. (orig.)Available from TIB Hannover: RO 801(98-19) / FIZ - Fachinformationszzentrum Karlsruhe / TIB - Technische InformationsbibliothekSIGLEDEGerman

Spectroscopy of T=3/2 Mirror Nuclei via Two-Step Fragmentation Using RISING

    No full text
Two two-step fragmentation reactions were performed using RISING to populate excited states in A approximate to 50 mirror nuclei near to the proton-drip line, in order to test isospin symmetry. The experiments were designed to observe gamma decays of excited states in the mirror nuclei Ni-53(28)25/Mn-53(25)28, which have a large value of total isospin (T = 3/2). In the continuing off-line analysis, gamma transitions have been observed in Ni-54 indicating that two-step fragmentation is a successful technique for spectroscopic investigations of proton-rich nuclear systems in this mass region

Large spin alignment of the unbound "5He fragment after fragmentation of 240 MeV/u"6He

Peripheral fragmentation of a 240 MeV/u beam of the halo nucleus "6He incident on carbon target has been studied in a kinematically complete experiment. It is found that one-neutron stripping to the unbound nucleus "5He is the dominant fragmentation mechanism and that it leads to a spin alignment of "5He in a plane perpendicular to the "5He momentum vector. This is expected to be a common feature for all neutron halo nuclei. N/Z Dependence of Projectile Fragmentation

11 pages, 5 figures, Proceedings of International Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics in Heavy-Ion Reactions and Neutron Stars, Beijing, July 10-14, 2007International audienceThe N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied in a recent experiment at the GSI laboratory with the ALADiN forward spectrometer coupled to the LAND neutron detector. Besides a primary beam of 124Sn, also secondary beams of 124La and 107Sn delivered by the FRS fragment separator have been used in order to extend the range of isotopic compositions of the produced spectator sources. With the achieved mass resolution of \Delta A/A \approx 1.5%, lighter isotopes with atomic numbers Z \le 10 are individually resolved. The presently ongoing analyses of the measured isotope yields focus on isoscaling and its relation to the properties of hot fragments at freeze-out and on the derivation of chemical freeze-out temperatures which are found to be independent of the isotopic composition of the studied systems. The latter result is at variance with the predictions for limiting temperatures as obtained with finite-temperature Hartree-Fock calculations

First results from the stopped beam isomer rising campaign at GSI

    No full text
The first results from a series of experiments focused on the study of the internal structure of nuclei at the extremes of N:Z ratio using isomer spectroscopy are reported. These experiments represent the first of the Stopped Beam section of the Rare Isotopes Investigations at GSI (RISING) project. Exotic nuclei were synthesized using relativistic projectile fragmentation of \sim 500 \rightarrow 1000 MeV/u beams of 107Ag, 208Pb, 136Xe and 58Ni, or fission of 750 MeV/u 238U provided by the SIS synchrotron at GSI. A detailed description of the RISING stopped beam set up is given, together with a report of the performance of the associated gamma-ray spectrometer array. Selected results of the first experimental campaign are presented together with a discussion on the use of isomeric spectroscopy to study GeV range nuclear fragmentation. Details on future research plans of this collaboration are also outlined

Isotopic dependence of the caloric curve

Isotopic effects in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies have been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z ratio of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Consequences for the proposed interpretation of chemical breakup temperatures as representing the limiting temperatures predicted by microscopic models are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
