    Multi-shell gold nanowires under compression

    Deformation properties of multi-wall gold nanowires under compressive loading are studied. Nanowires are simulated using a realistic many-body potential. Simulations start from cylindrical fcc(111) structures at T=0 K. After annealing cycles axial compression is applied on multi-shell nanowires for a number of radii and lengths at T=300 K. Several types of deformation are found, such as large buckling distortions and progressive crushing. Compressed nanowires are found to recover their initial lengths and radii even after severe structural deformations. However, in contrast to carbon nanotubes irreversible local atomic rearrangements occur even under small compressions.Comment: 1 gif figure, 5 ps figure

    Structure and Magnetism of Neutral and Anionic Palladium Clusters

    The properties of neutral and anionic Pd_N clusters were investigated with spin-density-functional calculations. The ground state structures are three-dimensional for N>3 and they are magnetic with a spin-triplet for 2<=N<=7 and a spin nonet for N=13 neutral clusters. Structural- and spin-isomers were determined and an anomalous increase of the magnetic moment with temperature is predicted for a Pd_7 ensemble.     Common Origin for Surface Reconstruction and the Formation of Chains of Metal Atoms

    During the fracture of nanocontacts gold spontaneously forms freely suspended chains of atoms, which is not observed for the iso-electronic noble metals Ag and Cu. Au also differs from Ag and Cu in forming reconstructions at its low-index surfaces. Using mechanically controllable break junctions we show that all the 5d metals that show similar reconstructions (Ir, Pt and Au) also form chains of atoms, while both properties are absent in the 4d neighbor elements (Rh, Pd, Ag), indicating a common origin for these two phenomena.     Decreasing muscle performance associated with increasing disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Objectives Increasing evidence suggests that inflammation has a detrimental effect on muscle strength. Our objective was to analyse the association between muscle performance and different disease activity levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Method A total of 199 consecutive outpatients were subject to cross-sectional assessment. Measurements of grip strength, endurance of the upper and lower limbs and trunk strength were combined as a muscle performance composite score (MPCS), using a standardised method. The disease activity for 28 joints (DAS28), radiographs of small joints (Larsen score), rheumatoid factor, body mass index (BMI), comorbidities and anti-rheumatic drugs were verified. Patients questionnaires included sociodemographic information, pain level, global disease activity, the Beck Depression Inventory, the mental and physical component scores of Short Form-36 and physical activity level. Results Of the 199 patients, 36%, 17% and 47% patients had remission, low/moderate and high DAS28, respectively. The patients in remission had significantly shorter disease duration, better parameters in terms of pain, physicians assessment, Larsen, Beck or physical component score of Short Form-36, and they were more physically active than other patients. After adjustments for age, sex, RA duration, radiographs and BMI, the decreasing MPCS associated linearly with the increasing DAS28 activity levels (linearity, P Conclusion Poorer MPCS is clearly associated with higher disease activity in patients with RA. Muscle performance is a modifiable risk factor. The findings suggest evaluating muscle performance in clinical practice as a part of patient care.Peer reviewe

    Temperature dependence of surface reconstructions of Au on Pd(110)

    Surface reconstructions of Au film on Pd(110) substrate are studied using a local Einstein approximation to quasiharmonic theory with the Sutton-Chen interatomic potential. Temperature dependent surface free energies for different coverages and surface structures are calculated. Experimentally observed transformations from (1Ă—1)(1\times1) to (1Ă—2)(1 \times 2) and (1Ă—3)(1 \times 3) structures can be explained in the framework of this model. Also conditions for Stranski-Krastanov growth mode are found to comply with experiments.     Relationship between lower limb neuromuscular performanceand bone strength in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis

    Objectives: To investigate whether neuromuscular performance predicts lower limb bone strength in different lower limb sites in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Neuromuscular performance of 139 volunteer women aged 50-68 with mild knee OA was measured using maximal counter movement jump test, isometric knee flexion and extension force and figure-of-eight-running test. Femoral neck section modulus (Z, mm3) was determined by data obtained from dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry. Data obtained using peripheral quantitative computed tomography was used to asses distal tibia compressive (BSId, g2/cm4) and tibial mid-shaft bending (SSImaxmid, mm3) strength indices. Results: After adjustment for height, weight and age, counter movement jump peak power production was the strongest independent predictor for Z (&beta;=0.44; p&lt;0.001) and for BSId (&beta;=0.32; p=0.003). This was also true in concentric net impulse for Z (&beta;=0.37; p=0.001) and for BSId (&beta;=0.40; p&lt;0.001). Additionally, knee extension force (&beta;=0.30; p&lt;0.001) and figure-of-eight-running test (&beta;= -0.32; p&lt;0.001) were among strongest independent predictors for BSId after adjustments. For SSImaxmid, concentric net impulse (&beta;=0.33; p=0.002) remained as the strongest independent predictor after adjustments. Conclusions: Neuromuscular performance in postmenopausal women with mild knee OA predicted lower limb bone strength in every measured skeletal site

    Reoperations after first lumbar disc herniation surgery; a special interest on residives during a 5-year follow-up

    BACKGROUND: The overall rate of operations after recurrent lumbar disc herniation has been shown to be 3–11%. However, little is known about the rate of residives. Thus the aim of this study was to explore the cumulative rates of re-operations and especially residive disc herniations at the same side and level as the primary disc herniation after first lumbar disc herniation surgery and the factors that influence the risk of re-operations over a five year follow-up study. METHODS: 166 virgin lumbar disc herniation patients (mean age 42 years, 57% males) were studied. Data on patients' initial disc operations and type and timing of re-operations during the follow-up were collected from patient files. Back and leg pain on visual analog scale and employment status were collected by questionnaires. RESULTS: The cumulative rate of re-operations for lumbar disc herniation was 10.2% (95% Cl 6.0 to 15.1). The rate of residives at initial site was 7.4% (95% Cl 3.7 to 11.3) and rate of lumbar disc herniations at other sites was 3.1% (95% Cl 0.6 to 6.2). The occurrence of residive lumbar disc herniations was evenly distributed across the 5 years. Neither age, gender, preoperative symptoms, physical activity nor employment had effect on the probability of re-operation. CONCLUSION: Seven percent of the lumbar disc patients had a residive lumbar disc operation within five years of their first operation. No specific factors influencing the risk for re-operation were found

    Stability of gold nanowires at large Au-Au separations

    The unusual structural stability of gold nanowires at large separations of gold atoms is explained from first-principles quantum mechanical calculations. We show that undetected light atoms, in particular hydrogen, stabilize the experimentally observed structures, which would be unstable in pure gold wires. The enhanced cohesion is due to the partial charge transfer from gold to the light atoms. This finding should resolve a long-standing controversy between theoretical predictions and experimental observations.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Background and Aims: Adult spinal deformity surgery has increased with the aging population and modern surgical approaches, although it has high complication and reoperation rates. The permanence of radiographic correction, mechanical complications, predictive factors for poor patient-reported outcomes, and patient satisfaction were analyzed.
