Bayesian optimization of the PC algorithm for learning Gaussian Bayesian networks
The PC algorithm is a popular method for learning the structure of Gaussian
Bayesian networks. It carries out statistical tests to determine absent edges
in the network. It is hence governed by two parameters: (i) The type of test,
and (ii) its significance level. These parameters are usually set to values
recommended by an expert. Nevertheless, such an approach can suffer from human
bias, leading to suboptimal reconstruction results. In this paper we consider a
more principled approach for choosing these parameters in an automatic way. For
this we optimize a reconstruction score evaluated on a set of different
Gaussian Bayesian networks. This objective is expensive to evaluate and lacks a
closed-form expression, which means that Bayesian optimization (BO) is a
natural choice. BO methods use a model to guide the search and are hence able
to exploit smoothness properties of the objective surface. We show that the
parameters found by a BO method outperform those found by a random search
strategy and the expert recommendation. Importantly, we have found that an
often overlooked statistical test provides the best over-all reconstruction
results
Light bullets in quadratic media with normal dispersion at the second harmonic
Stable two- and three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (STSs) in
second-harmonic-generating media are found in the case of normal dispersion at
the second harmonic (SH). This result, surprising from the theoretical
viewpoint, opens a way for experimental realization of STSs. An analytical
estimate for the existence of STSs is derived, and full results, including a
complete stability diagram, are obtained in a numerical form. STSs withstand
not only the normal SH dispersion, but also finite walk-off between the
harmonics, and readily self-trap from a Gaussian pulse launched at the

Superconductivity-enhanced bias spectroscopy in carbon nanotube quantum dots
We study low-temperature transport through carbon nanotube quantum dots in
the Coulomb blockade regime coupled to niobium-based superconducting leads. We
observe pronounced conductance peaks at finite source-drain bias, which we
ascribe to elastic and inelastic cotunneling processes enhanced by the
coherence peaks in the density of states of the superconducting leads. The
inelastic cotunneling lines display a marked dependence on the applied gate
voltage which we relate to different tunneling-renormalizations of the two
subbands in the nanotube. Finally, we discuss the origin of an especially
pronounced sub-gap structure observed in every fourth Coulomb diamond
Heterobimetallic conducting polymers based on salophen complexes via electrosynthesis
In this work, we report the first electrochemical synthesis of two copolymeric bimetallic conducting polymers by a simple anodic electropolymerization method. The adopted precursors are electroactive transition metal (M = Ni, Cu and Fe) salophen complexes, which can be easily obtained by direct chemical synthesis. The resulting films, labeled poly-NiCu and poly-CuFe, were characterized by cyclic voltammetry in both organic and aqueous media, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and coupled energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The films are conductive and exhibit great electrochemical stability in both organic and aqueous media (resistant over 100 cycles without significant loss in current response or changes in electrochemical behavior), which makes them good candidates for an array of potential applications. The study of cosmic ray access to locations inside the geomagnetic field has evolved in a manner that has led to some misunderstanding and misapplication of the terminology originally developed to describe particle access. Sociodemographic characteristics and food habits of organic consumers--a study from the Danish National Birth Cohort.
To access publisher's full text version of this article click on the hyperlink at the bottom of the pageTo develop a basis for building models that can examine the impact of organic food (OF) choices on maternal and offspring health, including identification of factors associated with OF consumption and underlying dietary patterns.Dietary intake was collected for the preceding month from an FFQ in mid-pregnancy and information on sociodemographic characteristics was collected from telephone interviews during pregnancy. From a question about OF consumption in the FFQ, including six food categories, an OF preference index was calculated. Latent variables that captured the variability in OF choices in relation to dietary intake were defined.The Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC), 1996-2002.Pregnant women from DNBC (n 60,773).We found that frequent OF use was highly associated with age, occupational status, urbanization, smoking and vegetarianism. By principal components analysis we identified two eating patterns, a ‘Western dietary pattern’ and a ‘Prudent dietary pattern’, that explained 14.2% of the variability in data. Frequent OF users consumed a more ‘prudent’ diet compared with non-users and had significantly higher intakes of vegetables (167%), fibre (113%) and n-3 fatty acids (111%) and less saturated fat (28%).Frequent OF users seemed to have a healthier lifestyle than non-users. These findings highlight a major challenge in observational studies examining the impact of OF consumption on health due to potentially irremediable confounding factors.Danish Fund for Organic Agriculture
