Magnetic susceptibility study of hydrated and non-hydrated NaxCoO2-yH2O single crystals

We have measured the magnetic susceptibility of single crystal samples of non-hydrated NaxCoO2 (x ~ 0.75, 0.67, 0.5, and 0.3) and hydrated Na0.3CoO2-yH2O (y ~ 0, 0.6, 1.3). Our measurements reveal considerable anisotropy between the susceptibilities with H||c and H||ab. The derived anisotropic g-factor ratio (g_ab/g_c) decreases significantly as the composition is changed from the Curie-Weiss metal with x = 0.75 to the paramagnetic metal with x = 0.3. Fully hydrated Na0.3CoO2-1.3H2O samples have a larger susceptibility than non-hydrated Na0.3CoO2 samples, as well as a higher degree of anisotropy. In addition, the fully hydrated compound contains a small additional fraction of anisotropic localized spins.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Deep shower interpretation of the cosmic ray events observed in excess of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin energy

    Get PDF
We consider the possibility that the ultra-high-energy cosmic ray flux has a small component of exotic particles which create showers much deeper in the atmosphere than ordinary hadronic primaries. It is shown that applying the conventional AGASA/HiRes/Auger data analysis procedures to such exotic events results in large systematic biases in the energy spectrum measurement. SubGZK exotic showers may be mis-reconstructed with much higher energies and mimick superGZK events. Alternatively, superGZK exotic showers may elude detection by conventional fluorescence analysis techniques.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

Spectroscopic applications and frequency locking of THz photomixing with distributed-Bragg-reflector diode lasers in low-temperature-grown GaAs

    Get PDF
A compact, narrow-linewidth, tunable source of THz radiation has been developed for spectroscopy and other high-resolution applications. Distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) diode lasers at 850 nm are used to pump a low-temperature-grown GaAs photomixer. Resonant optical feedback is employed to stabilize the center frequencies and narrow the linewidths of the DBR lasers. The heterodyne linewidth full-width at half-maximum of two optically locked DBR lasers is 50 kHz on the 20 ms time scale and 2 MHz over 10 s; free-running DBR lasers have linewidths of 40 and 90 MHz on such time scales. This instrument has been used to obtain rotational spectra of acetonitrile (CH3CN) at 313 GHz. Detection limits of 1 × 10^–4 Hz^1/2 (noise/total power) have been achieved, with the noise floor dominated by the detector's noise equivalent power

Hyperfine Anomaly of Be Isotopes and Anomalous Large Anomaly in 11^{11}Be

    Get PDF
A new result of investigations of the hyperfine structure (hfs) anomaly in Be isotopes is presented. The hfs constant for 11^{11}Be is obtained by using the core plus neutron type wave function: ∣2s12>+∣1d52×2+;1/2+> |2s_{1\over 2}>+|1d_{5\over2}\times 2^+ ; {1/2}^{+}> . A large hfs anomaly of 11^{11}Be is found, which is mainly due to a large radius of the halo single particle state.Comment: 14 pages, Late

Elementary amenable subgroups of R. Thompson's group F

The subgroup structure of Thompson's group F is not yet fully understood. The group F is a subgroup of the group PL(I) of orientation preserving, piecewise linear self homeomorphisms of the unit interval and this larger group thus also has a poorly understood subgroup structure. It is reasonable to guess that F is the "only" subgroup of PL(I) that is not elementary amenable. In this paper, we explore the complexity of the elementary amenable subgroups of F in an attempt to understand the boundary between the elementary amenable subgroups and the non-elementary amenable. We construct an example of an elementary amenable subgroup up to class (height) omega squared, where omega is the first infinite ordinal.Comment: 20 page

Phenomenological Analysis of D Meson Lifetimes

    Get PDF
The QCD-based operator-product-expansion technique is systematically applied to the study of charmed meson lifetimes. We stress that it is crucial to take into account the momentum of the spectator light quark of charmed mesons, otherwise the destructive Pauli-interference effect in D+D^+ decays will lead to a negative decay width for the D+D^+. We have applied the QCD sum rule approach to estimate the hadronic matrix elements of color-singlet and color-octet 4-quark operators relevant to nonleptonic inclusive DD decays. The lifetime of Ds+D_s^+ is found to be longer than that of D0D^0 because the latter receives a constructive WW-exchange contribution, whereas the hadronic annihilation and leptonic contributions to the former are compensated by the Pauli interference. We obtain the lifetime ratio τ(Ds+)/τ(D0)\tau(D_s^+)/\tau(D^0) ≈1.08±0.04\approx 1.08\pm 0.04, which is larger than some earlier theoretical estimates, but still smaller than the recent measurements by CLEO and E791.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

Sr impurity effects on the magnetic correlations of LaSrCuO

We examine the low-temperature magnetic properties of moderately doped LaSrCuO paying particular attention to the spin-glass (SG) phase and the C-IC transition as they are affected by Sr impurity disorder. New measurements of the low-temperature susceptibility in the SG phase show an increase of an anomalously small Curie constant with doping. This behaviour is explained in terms of our theoretical work that finds small clusters of AFM correlated regions separated by disordered domain walls. The domain walls lead to a percolating sequence of paths connecting the impurities. We predict that for this spin morphology the Curie constant should scale as 1/(2ξ(x,T=0)2)1/(2 \xi(x,T=0)^2), a result that is quantitatively in agreement with experiment. Also, we find that the magnetic correlations in the ground states in the SG phase are commensurate, and that this behaviour should persist at higher temperatures where the holes should move along the domain walls. However, our results show that incommensurate correlations develop continuously around 5 % doping, consistent with recent measurements by Yamada.Comment: 30 pages, revtex, 8 .ps format figures (2 meant to be in colour), to be published in Physical Review B

Phase control of La2CuO4 in thin-film synthesis

The lanthanum copper oxide, La2CuO4, which is an end member of the prototype high-Tc superconductors (La,Sr)2CuO4 and (La,Ba)2CuO4, crystallizes in the "K2NiF4" structure in high-temperature bulk synthesis. The crystal chemistry, however, predicts that La2CuO4 is at the borderline of the K2NiF4 stability and that it can crystallize in the Nd2CuO4 structure at low synthesis temperatures. In this article we demonstrate that low-temperature thin-film synthesis actually crystallizes La2CuO4 in the Nd2CuO4 structure. We also show that the phase control of "K2NiF4"-type La2CuO4 versus "Nd2CuO4"-type La2CuO4 can be achieved by varying the synthesis temperature and using different substrates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRB, revte
