    Wind and solar powered turbine

    Get PDF
A power generating station having a generator driven by solar heat assisted ambient wind is described. A first plurality of radially extendng air passages direct ambient wind to a radial flow wind turbine disposed in a centrally located opening in a substantially disc-shaped structure. A solar radiation collecting surface having black bodies is disposed above the fist plurality of air passages and in communication with a second plurality of radial air passages. A cover plate enclosing the second plurality of radial air passages is transparent so as to permit solar radiation to effectively reach the black bodies. The second plurality of air passages direct ambient wind and thermal updrafts generated by the black bodies to an axial flow turbine. The rotating shaft of the turbines drive the generator. The solar and wind drien power generating system operates in electrical cogeneration mode with a fuel powered prime mover

Attachment Style and Romantic Satisfaction as Predictors of Relationship Visibility on Facebook

    Get PDF
The current study investigates the influence of adult attachment style on romantic posting behaviors on Facebook. Attachment theory has been widely used to examine behaviors and attitudes within romantic relationships, but little research has been done to extend these findings to the context of social media. A survey of 212 participants was conducted using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. The results of a linear regression analysis showed that attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety predicted lower levels of romantic satisfaction, a finding reflective of previous attachment research (Hazan & Shaver, 1987). Two separate regression analyses were conducted to examine possible predictors of participants’ romantic displays on Facebook. The results of this study indicate that attachment style has an indirect influence on romantic posting behavior through its effect on relationship satisfaction. Specifically, romantic satisfaction is a stronger predictor of relationship visibility on Facebook than attachment style. The present study adds to the currently sparse body of research about romantic attachment and behavior on social media

Photon signature analysis using template matching

    Get PDF
We describe an approach to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by using a template matching procedure. This approach relies on the signature due to backstreaming ? photons from various targets. In this work we have simulated cylindrical targets of aluminum, iron, copper, water and ammonium nitrate (nitrogen-rich fertilizer). We simulate 3.5 MeV source photons distributed on a plane inside a shielded area using Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP TM) code version 5 (V5). The 3.5 MeV source gamma rays yield 511 keV peaks due to pair production and scattered gamma rays. In this work, we simulate capture of those photons that backstream, after impinging on the target element, toward a NaI detector. The captured backstreamed photons are expected to produce a unique spectrum that will become part of a simple signal processing recognition system based on the template matching method. Different elements were simulated using different sets of random numbers in the Monte Carlo simulation. To date, the sum of absolute differences (SAD) method has been used to match the template. In the examples investigated, template matching was found to detect all elements correctly

Electron momentum distribution of a single mobile hole in the t-J model

We investigate the electron momentum distribution function (EMDF) for the two-dimensional t-J model. The results are based on the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for the self-energy and the wave function. In the Ising limit of the model we give the results in a closed form, in the Heisenberg limit the results are obtained numerically. An anomalous momentum dependence of EMDF is found and the anomaly is in the lowest order in number of magnons expressed analitycally. We interpret the anomaly as a fingerprint of an emerging large Fermi surface coexisting with hole pockets.Comment: M2S - submitted to Physica

Disparities in the Health Care Status of Women: Implications for Research

    Get PDF
Even a cursory review of data on the health status of women reveals striking differences by race. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, death rates among Black women from the three leading causes of death (cardiac disease, cancer and cerebrovascular disease) exceed those of white, Asian, Native American and Latina women for each age category from 45-84. With the exception of Black women, the death rates among white women from these diseases exceed those of other ethnic groups of women. Data on two of the risk factors for cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases (hypertension and obesity), show that rates among Black women exceed those of white women by a ratio of 2:1. Overall, the age-adjusted obesity rate between 1976-1980 was 44% among Black women and 24% among white women between the ages 20-74. The 1988-1991 obesity rates for Black and white women were 50% and 34% respectively

Drink wise, age well; reducing alcohol related harm among people over 50: a study protocol

    Get PDF
Background: Evidence suggests that the use of alcohol among older adults (defined as those aged 50+) has increased in recent years, with people aged 55-64 now more likely to exceed the recommended weekly guidelines than any other age group. Methods/ design: This is a quasi-experimental study with a before-after design. A postal questionnaire will be sent to 76,000 people aged 50 and over registered with a general practice in five different 'demonstration' (intervention) and control areas in the UK. Multiple interventions will then be delivered in demonstration areas across the UK. At the end of the programme, a postal questionnaire will be sent to the same individuals who completed it pre-programme to establish if there has been a reduction in alcohol use, at-risk drinking and alcohol related problems. Qualitative interviews with clients and staff will explore how the interventions were experienced; how they may work to bring about change and to identify areas for practice improvements. Discussion: This study protocol describes a multi-level, multi-intervention prevention-to-treatment programme which aims to reduce alcohol-related harm in people aged 50 and over

Direct Evidence for the Source of Reported Magnetic Behavior in "CoTe"

In order to unambiguously identify the source of magnetism reported in recent studies of the Co-Te system, two sets of high-quality, epitaxial CoTex_x films (thickness \simeq 300 nm) were prepared by pulse laser deposition (PLD). X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that all of the films are epitaxial along the [001] direction and have the hexagonal NiAs structure. There is no indication of any second phase metallic Co peaks (either fccfcc or hcphcp) in the XRD patterns. The two sets of CoTex_x films were grown on various substrates with PLD targets having Co:Te in the atomic ratio of 50:50 and 35:65. From the measured lattice parameters c=5.396A˚c = 5.396 \AA for the former and c=5.402A˚c = 5.402\AA for the latter, the compositions CoTe1.71_{1.71} (63.1% Te) and CoTe1.76_{1.76} (63.8% Te), respectively, are assigned to the principal phase. Although XRD shows no trace of metallic Co second phase, the magnetic measurements do show a ferromagnetic contribution for both sets of films with the saturation magnetization values for the CoTe1.71_{1.71} films being approximately four times the values for the CoTe1.76_{1.76} films. 59^{59}Co spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) clearly shows the existence of metallic Co inclusions in the films. The source of weak ferromagnetism reported in several recent studies is due to the presence of metallic Co, since the stoichiometric composition "CoTe" does not exist.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
