The impact of support for imports on food security in Indonesia

This study on the impact of import support on food security was conducted in eight developing countries -including Indonesia- that were facing food insecurity and were recipients of subsidized exports and food aid. In Indonesia, the analysis of import flows in comparison with overall production and consumption data led to the selection of the three import substitute commodities, soybean, sugar and milk, that were the focus of this study. Fastab: Solving the Pitch to Notation Problem

I have always been frustrated with the length of time necessary to notate a piece of music. Computers have simplified so many other aspects of our lives, it seems that they should be able to simplify this task as well. In fact, there are already two distinct ways that engineers have attempted to attack this problem. The first analyzes the waveform generated by microphone input and relies on Fourier Analysis and other similar methods. The other examines the analog signal generated by a electric guitar-like pickup placed beneath the strings. The method used by Fastab relies much less on the musical properties of an instrument. Instead, Fastab records where and when the fingers and pick contact the instrument using digital electronics and microprocessor technology. Fastab provides a solution to the pitch to notation problem which is cheaper and more accurate than any other device available today

Maximal violation of Bell inequalities by position measurements

We show that it is possible to find maximal violations of the CHSH-Bell inequality using only position measurements on a pair of entangled non-relativistic free particles. The device settings required in the CHSH inequality are done by choosing one of two times at which position is measured. For different assignments of the "+" outcome to positions, namely to an interval, to a half line, or to a periodic set, we determine violations of the inequalities, and states where they are attained. These results have consequences for the hidden variable theories of Bohm and Nelson, in which the two-time correlations between distant particle trajectories have a joint distribution, and hence cannot violate any Bell inequality.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Sex differences in intimate relationships

Social networks have turned out to be of fundamental importance both for our understanding human sociality and for the design of digital communication technology. However, social networks are themselves based on dyadic relationships and we have little understanding of the dynamics of close relationships and how these change over time. Evolutionary theory suggests that, even in monogamous mating systems, the pattern of investment in close relationships should vary across the lifespan when post-weaning investment plays an important role in maximising fitness. Mobile phone data sets provide us with a unique window into the structure of relationships and the way these change across the lifespan. We here use data from a large national mobile phone dataset to demonstrate striking sex differences in the pattern in the gender-bias of preferred relationships that reflect the way the reproductive investment strategies of the two sexes change across the lifespan: these differences mainly reflect women's shifting patterns of investment in reproduction and parental care. These results suggest that human social strategies may have more complex dynamics than we have tended to assume and a life-history perspective may be crucial for understanding them.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, contains electronic supplementary materia
