Comment on 'Quantum Backreaction on "Classical" Variables'
It is argued that the bracket of Anderson's canonical theory should have been
antisymmetric otherwise serious controversies arise like violation of both
hermiticity and the Leibniz rule of differentiation.Comment: 3 pages, LaTe
Some analogues of Knopp’s core theorem
Inequalities between certain functionals on the space of bounded real sequences are considered. Such inequalities being analogues of the classical theorem of Knopp on the core of a sequence. Also, a result is given on infinite matrices of bounded linear operators acting on bounded sequences in a Banach space
Uniform Toeplitz matrices
We characterize all infinite matrices of bounded linear operators on a Banach space which preserve the limits of uniformly convergent sequences defined on an infinite set. Also, we give a Tauberian theorem for uniform summability by the Kuttner-Maddox matrix
Testing the Hubble Law with the IRAS 1.2 Jy Redshift Survey
We test and reject the claim of Segal et al. (1993) that the correlation of
redshifts and flux densities in a complete sample of IRAS galaxies favors a
quadratic redshift-distance relation over the linear Hubble law. This is done,
in effect, by treating the entire galaxy luminosity function as derived from
the 60 micron 1.2 Jy IRAS redshift survey of Fisher et al. (1995) as a distance
indicator; equivalently, we compare the flux density distribution of galaxies
as a function of redshift with predictions under different redshift-distance
cosmologies, under the assumption of a universal luminosity function. This
method does not assume a uniform distribution of galaxies in space. We find
that this test has rather weak discriminatory power, as argued by Petrosian
(1993), and the differences between models are not as stark as one might expect
a priori. Even so, we find that the Hubble law is indeed more strongly
supported by the analysis than is the quadratic redshift-distance relation. We
identify a bias in the the Segal et al. determination of the luminosity
function, which could lead one to mistakenly favor the quadratic
redshift-distance law. We also present several complementary analyses of the
density field of the sample; the galaxy density field is found to be close to
homogeneous on large scales if the Hubble law is assumed, while this is not the
case with the quadratic redshift-distance relation.Comment: 27 pages Latex (w/figures), ApJ, in press. Uses AAS macros,

The Fornax Spectroscopic Survey: The Number of Unresolved Compact Galaxies
We describe a sample of thirteen bright (18.5<Bj<20.1) compact galaxies at
low redshift (0.05<z<0.21) behind the Fornax Cluster. These galaxies are
unresolved on UK Schmidt sky survey plates, so would be missing from most
galaxy catalogs compiled from this material. The objects were found during
initial observations of The Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. This project is using
the Two-degree Field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain
spectra for a complete sample of all 14000 objects, stellar and non-stellar,
with 16.5<Bj<19.7, in a 12 square degree area centered on the Fornax cluster of
galaxies. The surface density of compact galaxies with magnitudes 16.5<Bj<19.7
is 7+/-3 /sq.deg., representing 2.8+/-1.6% of all local (z<0.2) galaxies to
this limit. There are 12+/-3 /sq.deg. with 16.5<Bj<20.2. They are luminous
(-21.5<Mb<-18.0, for H0=50 km/s/mpc) and most have strong emission lines (H
alpha equivalent widths of 40-200 A) and small sizes typical of luminous HII
galaxies and compact narrow emission line galaxies. Four out of thirteen have
red colors and early-type spectra, so are unlikely to have been detected in any
previous surveys.Comment: LaTeX source; 5 pages including 3 figures; uses emulateapj.st
The optical-ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies
This paper aims to understand the continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies. By fitting
the single galaxies in the sample of Heckman et al. (1995) with composite
models (shock+ photoionization from the active center), we show that five main
components characterize the SED of the continuum. Shocks play an important role
since they produce a high temperature zone where soft X-rays are emitted.
We show that in the optical-UV range, the slope of the NLR emission
reproduces the observed values, and may be the main component of the
featureless continuum. The presence of star forming regions cannot be excluded
in the circumnuclear region of various Seyfert galaxies. An attempt is made to
find their fingerprints in the observed AGN spectra. Finally, it is
demonstrated that multi-cloud models are necessary to interpret the spectra of
single objects, even in the global investigation of a sample of galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX (including 5 Tables) + 17 PostScript figures. To

Fatigue performance of friction stir welded marine grade steel
An extensive study on the fatigue performance of friction stir welded DH36 steel was carried out. The main focus of this experimental testing programme was fatigue testing accompanied by tensile tests, geometry measurements, hardness and residual stress measurements, and fracture surface examination. The S-N curve for friction stir butt welded joints was generated and compared with the International Institute of Welding recommendations for conventional fusion butt welds. Friction stir welds of marine grade steel exceeded the relevant rules for fusion welding. This newly developed S-N curve is being proposed for use in the relevant fatigue assessment guidelines for friction stir welding of low alloy steel. Fracture surfaces were examined to investigate the fatigue failure mechanism, which was found to be affected by the processing features generated by the friction stir welding tool
Local Polariton States in Polar Crystals with Impurities
We show that an impurity embedded in an ionic crystal can give rise to a
novel kind of local states. These states exist within a polariton gap of a
material and are a mix of excitations of the crystal, such as phonons or
excitons, and the transverse electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic
component of the states along with the corresponding excitations of the
material are localized in the vicinity of an impurity.Comment: 9 pages, RevTe
A Quantitative Evaluation of the Galaxy Component of COSMOS and APM Catalogs
We have carried out an independent quantitative evaluation of the galaxy
component of the "COSMOS/UKST Southern Sky Object Catalogue" (SSC) and the
"APM/UKST J Catalogue" (APM). Using CCD observations our results corroborate
the accuracy of the photometry of both catalogs, which have an overall
dispersion of about 0.2 mag in the range 17 <= b_J <= 21.5. The SSC presents
externally calibrated galaxy magnitudes that follow a linear relation, while
the APM instrumental magnitudes of galaxies, only internally calibrated by the
use of stellar profiles, require second-order corrections. The completeness of
both catalogs in a general field falls rapidly fainter than b_J = 20.0, being
slightly better for APM. The 90% completeness level of the SSC is reached
between b_J = 19.5 and 20.0, while for APM this happens between b_J = 20.5 and
21.0. Both SSC and APM are found to be less complete in a galaxy cluster field.
Galaxies misclassified as stars in the SSC receive an incorrect magnitude
because the stellar ones take saturation into account besides using a different
calibration curve. In both cases, the misclassified galaxies show a large
diversity of colors that range from typical colors of early-types to those of
blue star-forming galaxies. A possible explanation for this effect is that it
results from the combination of low sampling resolutions with properties of the
image classifier for objects with characteristic sizes close to the
instrumental resolution. We find that the overall contamination by stars
misclassified as galaxies is < 5% to b_J = 20.5, as originally estimated for
both catalogs. Although our results come from small areas of the sky, they are
extracted from two different plates and are based on the comparison with two
independent datasets.Comment: 14 pages of text and tables, 8 figures; to be published in the

Superconducting Fluxon Pumps and Lenses
We study stochastic transport of fluxons in superconductors by alternating
current (AC) rectification. Our simulated system provides a fluxon pump,
"lens", or fluxon "rectifier" because the applied electrical AC is transformed
into a net DC motion of fluxons. Thermal fluctuations and the asymmetry of the
ratchet channel walls induce this "diode" effect, which can have important
applications in devices, like SQUID magnetometers, and for fluxon optics,
including convex and concave fluxon lenses. Certain features are unique to this
novel two-dimensional (2D) geometric pump, and different from the previously
studied 1D ratchets.Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, in press (1999); 4 pages, 5 .gif figures;
