    Heart Disease in Patients with HIV/AIDS-An Emerging Clinical Problem

    HIV/AIDS (Human immunodeficiency virus/ Acquired immuno deficiency syndrome) is a growing global problem, in terms of its incidence and mortality. Patients with HIV/AIDS are living much longer with HAART (Highly active antiretroviral therapy) therapy so much so that HIV/AIDS has now become a part of the chronic disease burden, like hypertension and diabetes. Patients with HIV/AIDS and symptoms suggestive of cardiac disease represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in clinical practice; Cardiologists are more frequently encountering this problem. An algorithmic, anatomic approach to diagnosis, localizing disease to the endocardium, myocardium and pericardium can be useful. An intimate knowledge of opportunistic infections affecting the heart, effects of HAART therapy and therapy for opportunistic infections on the heart is needed to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis. Effects of HAART therapy, especially protease inhibitors on lipid and glucose metabolism, and their influence on progression to premature vascular disease require consideration. Treatment of cardiac disease, in HIV/AIDS patients can vary from non-HIV patients, based on drug interactions, differences in responsiveness, and other factors; and this area requires further research

    Parasitic Contamination of Fresh Leafy Green Vegetables Sold in Northern Lebanon

    Contaminated, raw or undercooked vegetables can transmit parasitic infections. Here, we investigated parasitic contamination of leafy green vegetables sold in local markets in the Tripoli district, Lebanon, during two consecutive autumn seasons (2020–2021). The study involved the microscopic examination of 300 samples of five different types of vegetables (60 samples per type) and used standardized qualitative parasitological techniques for some protozoa and helminths. The results showed that 16.7% (95% interval for p: 12.6%, 21.4%) (50/300) of the vegetable samples were contaminated with at least one parasite. The most frequently detected parasite was Blastocystis spp. (8.7%; 26/300); this was followed in frequency by Ascaris spp. (3.7%; 11/300). Among the different vegetable types, lettuce (23.3%; 14/60) was the most contaminated, while arugula was the least contaminated (11.7%; 7/60). The statistical analysis did not reveal any significant association between the prevalence of parasitic contamination and the investigated risk factors, which included collection date, vegetable type, market storage status, and wetness of vegetables at the time of purchase (p > 0.05). The high prevalence of parasitic contamination also suggested the potential presence of other microbial pathogens. These findings are important because leafy green vegetables are preferentially and heavily consumed raw in Lebanon. Thus, implementing effective measures that target the farm-to-fork continuum is recommended in order to reduce the spread of intestinal pathogens

    Primary undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver is a rare tumor with a peak incidence between the ages of 6 and 10 years. We report a case of a primary hepatic undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma arising in a 21-year-old male mistaken for hydatid disease of the liver. The rapid recurrence of this tumor along the site of attempted percutaneous drainage illustrates some important management points regarding this malignancy

    Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4 Scintillating Bolometers for Rare-Event Search Experiments

    We report on the development of scintillating bolometers based on lithium molybdate crystals containing molybdenum depleted in the double-β\beta active isotope 100^{100}Mo (Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4). We used two Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4 cubic samples, 45 mm side and 0.28 kg each, produced following purification and crystallization protocols developed for double-β\beta search experiments with 100^{100}Mo-enriched Li2_2MoO4_4 crystals. Bolometric Ge detectors were utilized to register scintillation photons emitted by the Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4 crystal scintillators. The measurements were performed in the CROSS cryogenic set-up at the Canfranc underground laboratory (Spain). We observed that the Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4 scintillating bolometers are characterized by excellent spectrometric performance (∼\sim3--6 keV FWHM at 0.24--2.6 MeV γ\gamma's), moderate scintillation signal (∼\sim0.3--0.6 keV/MeV depending on light collection conditions) and high radiopurity (228^{228}Th and 226^{226}Ra activities are below a few μ\muBq/kg), comparable to the best reported results of low-temperature detectors based on Li2_2MoO4_4 with natural or 100^{100}Mo-enriched molybdenum content. Prospects of Li2_2100depl^{100\textrm{depl}}MoO4_4 bolometers for use in rare-event search experiments are briefly discussed.Comment: Prepared for submission to MDPI Sensors; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 3 table

    Thyroid Hormone Promotes Remodeling of Coronary Resistance Vessels

    Low thyroid hormone (TH) function has been linked to impaired coronary blood flow, reduced density of small arterioles, and heart failure. Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanisms by which THs regulate coronary microvascular remodeling. The current study examined the initial cellular events associated with coronary remodeling induced by triiodothyronine (T3) in hypothyroid rats. Rats with established hypothyroidism, eight weeks after surgical thyroidectomy (TX), were treated with T3 for 36 or 72 hours. The early effects of T3 treatment on coronary microvasculature were examined morphometrically. Gene expression changes in the heart were assessed by quantitative PCR Array. Hypothyroidism resulted in arteriolar atrophy in the left ventricle. T3 treatment rapidly induced small arteriolar muscularization and, within 72 hours, restored arteriolar density to control levels. Total length of the capillary network was not affected by TX or T3 treatment. T3 treatment resulted in the coordinate regulation of Angiopoietin 1 and 2 expression. The response of Angiopoietins was consistent with vessel enlargement. In addition to the well known effects of THs on vasoreactivity, these results suggest that THs may affect function of small resistance arteries by phenotypic remodeling of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC)

    Final results on the 0νββ decay half-life limit of 100^{100} Mo from the CUPID-Mo experiment

    The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0νββ decay in 100^{100}Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0νββ decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched Li2100_2^{100}MoO4_4 scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of ∼0.2 kg, operated at ∼20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo (100^{100}Mo exposure of 1.47 kg×year) used to search for lepton number violation via 0νββ decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the 100^{100}Mo 0νββ decay half-life of T1/20ν^{0ν}_{1/2} >1.8×1024^{24} year (stat. + syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of ⟨mββ_{ββ}⟩ < (0.28−0.49) eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized

    The background model of the CUPID-Mo 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta experiment

    CUPID-Mo, located in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator for the next generation 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta decay experiment, CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 enriched Li2_{2}100 ^{100}MoO4_4 bolometers and 20 Ge light detectors and has demonstrated that the technology of scintillating bolometers with particle identification capabilities is mature. Furthermore, CUPID-Mo can inform and validate the background prediction for CUPID. In this paper, we present a detailed model of the CUPID-Mo backgrounds. This model is able to describe well the features of the experimental data and enables studies of the 2νββ2\nu\beta\beta decay and other processes with high precision. We also measure the radio-purity of the Li2_{2}100^{100}MoO4_4 crystals which are found to be sufficient for the CUPID goals. Finally, we also obtain a background index in the region of interest of 3.7−0.8+0.9^{+0.9}_{-0.8}(stat)−0.7+1.5^{+1.5}_{-0.7}(syst)×10−3\times10^{-3}counts/Δ\DeltaEFWHM_{FWHM}/moliso_{iso}/yr, the lowest in a bolometric 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta decay experiment
