Corrections to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation and chiral couplings and
Next to leading order corrections to the
Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation (GMOR) are obtained using weighted QCD Finite
Energy Sum Rules (FESR) involving the pseudoscalar current correlator. Two
types of integration kernels in the FESR are used to suppress the contribution
of the kaon radial excitations to the hadronic spectral function, one with
local and the other with global constraints. The result for the pseudoscalar
current correlator at zero momentum is , leading to the chiral corrections to GMOR: . The resulting uncertainties are mostly due to variations in the upper
limit of integration in the FESR, within the stability regions, and to a much
lesser extent due to the uncertainties in the strong coupling and the strange
quark mass. Higher order quark mass corrections, vacuum condensates, and the
hadronic resonance sector play a negligible role in this determination. These
results confirm an independent determination from chiral perturbation theory
giving also very large corrections, i.e. roughly an order of magnitude larger
than the corresponding corrections in chiral . Combining
these results with our previous determination of the corrections to GMOR in
chiral , , we are able to determine two low
energy constants of chiral perturbation theory, i.e. , and , both at the
scale of the -meson mass.Comment: Revised version with minor correction
A deeper look at the dust attenuation law of star-forming galaxies at high redshift
A diverse range of dust attenuation laws is found in star-forming galaxies. In particular, Tress et al. (2018) studied the SHARDS survey to constrain the NUV bump strength (B) and the total-to-selective ratio (R-V) of 1753 star-forming galaxies in the GOODS-N field at 1.5 < z < 3. We revisit here this sample to assess the implications and possible causes of the correlation found between R-V and B. The UVJ bicolour plot and main sequence of star formation are scrutinized to look for clues into the observed trend. The standard boundary between quiescent and star-forming galaxies is preserved when taking into account the wide
range of attenuation parameters. However, an additional degeneracy - regarding the effective attenuation law - is added to the standard loci of star-forming galaxies in the UVJ diagram. A simple phenomenological model with an age-dependent extinction (at fixed dust composition) is compatible with the observed trend between R-V and B, whereby the
opacity decreases with the age of the populations, resulting in a weaker NUV bump when the overall attenuation is shallower (greyer). In addition, we compare the constraints obtained by the SHARDS sample with dust models from the literature, supporting a scenario where geometry could potentially drive the correlation between R-V and B
The origin of the Acheulean: the 1.7 million-year-old site of FLK West, Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)
The appearance of the Acheulean is one of the hallmarks of human evolution. It represents the
emergence of a complex behavior, expressed in the recurrent manufacture of large-sized tools, with
standardized forms, implying more advance forethought and planning by hominins than those required
by the precedent Oldowan technology. The earliest known evidence of this technology dates back to
c. 1.7 Ma. and is limited to two sites (Kokiselei [Kenya] and Konso [Ethiopia]), both of which lack fauna.
The functionality of these earliest Acheulean assemblages remains unknown. Here we present the
discovery of another early Acheulean site also dating to c. 1.7 Ma from Olduvai Gorge. This site provides
evidence of the earliest steps in developing the Acheulean technology and is the oldest Acheulean site in
which stone tools occur spatially and functionally associated with the exploitation of fauna. Simple and
elaborate large-cutting tools (LCT) and handaxes co-exist at FLK West, showing that complex cognition
was present from the earliest stages of the Acheulean. Here we provide a detailed technological study
and evidence of the use of these tools on the butchery and consumption of fauna, probably by early

The Holocene volcanism at El Hierro: insights from petrology and geochemistry
The Holocene volcanism at El Hierro consists of basaltic monogenetic volcanic fields associated with o the three rift systems present in this island. In this work we report preliminary petrological and geochemical data of Holocene lava flows belonging to the WNW-striking rift. Sampling was focused in three zones: Orchilla, Verodal-Sabinosa, and Tanganasoga. Petrography of the studied lavas shows that they are homogeneous. All samples are porphyritic with macrocrysts of clinopyroxene and olivine immersed in a groundmass formed by microcrysts of plagioclase, Fe-Ti oxides and clinopyroxene. Clinopyroxenes are diopsides, olivines have forsterite contents ranging from 74 to 84 % and anorthite in plagioclase varies from 66 to 76% (labradorite). Whole-rock geochemical results evidence that all magmas are basic in composition, ranging from picrobasalts to phonotephrites. Major, trace elements and isotope suppor fractional crystallization as the main process of magma evolution. However, petrography and chemistry of clinopyroxene cores agree with a xenocrystic nature of some of them. We suggest that these clinopyroxene cores crystallized from a genetically related magma and subsequently were entrapped o cannibalized by the basic rising magmas
Mutational status of K- ras and TP53 genes in primary sarcomas of the heart
We investigated three patients with cardiac angiosarcomas and two with cardiac rhabdomyosarcomas, all for mutations at exons 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the p53 gene and at exon 1 of K- ras. No point mutations were observed in the p53 gene in any of the five cases; however, at exon 1 of K- ras, three patients (60%) presented the same mutation at the first base of codon 13 (G to A transition). Interestingly, this mutation was detected in both rhabdomyosarcoma and angiosarcoma histologic sarcoma types. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Interfacing Neurons with Nanostructured Electrodes Modulates Synaptic Circuit Features
Understanding neural physiopathology requires advances in nanotechnology-based interfaces, engineered to monitor the functional state of mammalian nervous cells. Such interfaces typically contain nanometer-size features for stimulation and recording as in cell-non-invasive extracellular microelectrode arrays. In such devices, it turns crucial to understand specific interactions of neural cells with physicochemical features of electrodes, which could be designed to optimize performance. Herein, versatile flexible nanostructured electrodes covered by arrays of metallic nanowires are fabricated and used to investigate the role of chemical composition and nanotopography on rat brain cells in vitro. By using Au and Ni as exemplary materials, nanostructure and chemical composition are demonstrated to play major roles in the interaction of neural cells with electrodes. Nanostructured devices are interfaced to rat embryonic cortical cells and postnatal hippocampal neurons forming synaptic circuits. It is shown that Au-based electrodes behave similarly to controls. Contrarily, Ni-based nanostructured electrodes increase cell survival, boost neuronal differentiation, and reduce glial cells with respect to flat counterparts. Nonetheless, Au-based electrodes perform superiorly compared to Ni-based ones. Under electrical stimulation, Au-based nanostructured substrates evoke intracellular calcium dynamics compatible with neural networks activation. These studies highlight the opportunity for these electrodes to excite a silent neural network by direct neuronal membranes depolarization
Milky Way Demographics with the VVV Survey II. Color Transformations and Near-Infrared Photometry for 136 Million Stars in the Southern Galactic Disk
The new multi-epoch near-infrared VVV survey (VISTA Variables in the Via
Lactea) is sampling 562 sq. deg of the Galactic bulge and adjacent regions of
the disk. Accurate astrometry established for the region surveyed allows the
VVV data to be merged with overlapping surveys (e.g., GLIMPSE, WISE, 2MASS,
etc.), thereby enabling the construction of longer baseline spectral energy
distributions for astronomical targets. However, in order to maximize use of
the VVV data, a set of transformation equations are required to place the VVV
JHKs photometry onto the 2MASS system. The impetus for this work is to develop
those transformations via a comparison of 2MASS targets in 152 VVV fields
sampling the Galactic disk. The transformation coefficients derived exhibit a
reliance on variables such as extinction. The transformed data were
subsequently employed to establish a mean reddening law of
E_{J-H}/E_{H-Ks}=2.13 +/- 0.04, which is the most precise determination to date
and merely emphasizes the pertinence of the VVV data for determining such
important parameters.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, published in A&
Corrosion resistance of anodic layers grown on 304L stainless steel at different anodizing times and stirring speeds
Different chemical and physical treatments have been used to improve the properties and functionalities of steels. Anodizing is one of the most promising treatments, due to its versatility and easy industrial implementation. It allows the growth of nanoestructured oxide films with interesting properties able to be employed in different industrial sectors. The present work studies the influence of the anodizing time (15, 30, 45 and 60 min), as well as the stirring speed (0, 200, 400, and 600 rpm), on the morphology and the corrosion resistance of the anodic layers grown in 304L stainless steel. The anodic layers were characterized morphologically, compositionally, and electrochemically, in order to determine the influence of the anodization parameters on their corrosion behavior in a 0.6 mol L-1 NaCl solution. The results show that at 45 and 60 min anodizing times, the formation of two microstructures is favored, associated with the collapse of the nanoporous structures at the metal-oxide interphace. However, both the stirring speed and the anodizing time have a negligeable effect on the corrosion behavior of the anodized 304L SS samples, since their electrochemical values are similar to those of the non-anodized ones
