Ducks on the torus: existence and uniqueness
We show that there exist generic slow-fast systems with only one
(time-scaling) parameter on the two-torus, which have canard cycles for
arbitrary small values of this parameter. This is in drastic contrast with the
planar case, where canards usually occur in two-parametric families. Here we
treat systems with a convex slow curve. In this case there is a set of
parameter values accumulating to zero for which the system has exactly one
attracting and one repelling canard cycle. The basin of the attracting cycle is
almost the whole torus.Comment: To appear in Journal of Dynamical and Control Systems, presumably

Dynamics and gravitational wave signature of collapsar formation
We perform 3+1 general relativistic simulations of rotating core collapse in the context of the collapsar model for long gamma-ray bursts. We employ a realistic progenitor, rotation based on results of stellar evolution calculations, and a simplified equation of state. Our simulations track self-consistently collapse, bounce, the postbounce phase, black hole formation, and the subsequent early hyperaccretion phase. We extract gravitational waves from the spacetime curvature and identify a unique gravitational wave signature associated with the early phase of collapsar formatio

How Do Spouses Share their Full Income in Russia?: Identification of the Sharing Rule Using Self-reported Income
Accepté dans une version révisée par la Review of Income and WealthInternational audienceThe paper applies the collective model to the analysis of intra-household inequality using self-reported income scales and provides a test for its assumptions. We assume a correspondence between the income level that household members report and their true income sharing. Using Russian data, we first show that this assumption is supported by the data, and then use couples who report the same level of income to identify the full sharing rule for the whole sample. From simulations for an average couple living in the Urals, we find that a full income share of 45% is allocated to the wife
Superconducting density of states and vortex cores of 2H-NbS2
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements in the
superconducting dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 show a peculiar superconducting density
of states with two well defined features at 0.97 meV and 0.53 meV, located
respectively above and below the value for the superconducting gap expected
from single band s-wave BCS model (D=1.76kBTc=0.9 meV). Both features have a
continuous temperature evolution and disappear at Tc = 5.7 K. Moreover, we
observe the hexagonal vortex lattice with radially symmetric vortices and a
well developed localized state at the vortex cores. The sixfold star shape
characteristic of the vortex lattice of the compound 2H-NbSe2 is, together with
the charge density wave order (CDW), absent in 2H-NbS2.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Inner wellbeing: concept and validation of a new approach to subjective perceptions of wellbeing-India

IWB expresses what people think and feel they are able to be and do. Drawing together scholarship in wellbeing and international development it is grounded in field research in marginalised, rural communities in the global South. Results from research in India at two points in time (2011 and 2013) are reported. At Time 1 (n = 287), we were unable to confirm an eight-factor, correlated model as distinct yet interrelated domains. However, at Time 2 (n = 335), we were able to confirm a revised, seven-factor correlated model with economic confidence, agency and participation, social connections, close relationships, physical and mental health, competence and self-worth, and values and meaning (five items per domain) as distinct yet interrelated domains. In particular, at Time 2, a seven-factor, correlated model provided a significantly better fit to the data than did a one-factor model. This work is supported by the Economic and Social Research Council/Department for

Seeking for toroidal event horizons from initially stationary BH configurations
We construct and evolve non-rotating vacuum initial data with a ring
singularity, based on a simple extension of the standard Brill-Lindquist
multiple black-hole initial data, and search for event horizons with spatial
slices that are toroidal when the ring radius is sufficiently large. While
evolutions of the ring singularity are not numerically feasible for large
radii, we find some evidence, based on configurations of multiple BHs arranged
in a ring, that this configuration leads to singular limit where the horizon
width has zero size, possibly indicating the presence of a naked singularity,
when the radius of the ring is sufficiently large. This is in agreement with
previous studies that have found that there is no apparent horizon surrounding
the ring singularity when the ring's radius is larger than about twice its
mass.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figure
Money, sex and happiness : an empirical study
The links between income, sexual behavior and reported happiness are studied using recent data on a sample of 16,000 adult Americans. The paper finds that sexual activity enters strongly positively in happiness equations. Higher income does not buy more sex or more sexual partners. Married people have more sex than those who are single, divorced, widowed or separated. The happinessâmaximizing number of sexual partners in the previous year is calculated to be 1. Highly educated females tend to have fewer sexual partners. Homosexuality has no statistically significant effect on happiness
