    The Stellar Populations in the Outer Regions of M33. I. Metallicity Distribution Function

    We present deep CCD photometry in the VI passbands using the WIYN 3.5m telescope of a field located approximately 20' southeast of the center of M33; this field includes the region studied by Mould & Kristian in their 1986 paper. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) extends to I~25 and shows a prominent red giant branch (RGB), along with significant numbers of asymptotic giant branch and young main sequence stars. The red clump of core helium burning stars is also discernable near the limit of our CMD. The I-band apparent magnitude of the red giant branch tip implies a distance modulus of (m-M)_I = 24.77 +/- 0.06, which combined with an adopted reddening of E(V-I)=0.06 +/- 0.02 yields an absolute modulus of (m-M)_0 = 24.69 +/- 0.07 (867 +/- 28 kpc) for M33. Over the range of deprojected radii covered by our field (~8.5 to ~12.5 kpc), we find a significant age gradient with an upper limit of ~1 Gyr (~0.25 Gyr/kpc). Comparison of the RGB photometry to empirical giant branch sequences for Galactic globulars allows us to use the dereddened color of these stars to construct a metallicity distribution function (MDF). The primary peak in the MDF is at a metallicity of [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 with a tail to lower abundances. The peak does show radial variation with a slope of d[Fe/H]/dR_{deproj} = -0.06 +/- 0.01 dex/kpc. This gradient is consistent with the variation seen in the inner disk regions of M33.     Initial sites of hepadnavirus integration into host genome in human hepatocytes and in the woodchuck model of hepatitis B-associated hepatocellular carcinoma

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the closely related woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV) are potent carcinogens that trigger development of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The initial sites of hepadnavirus–host genome integration, their diversity and kinetics of formation can be central to virus persistence and the initiation and progression of HCC. To recognize the nature of the very early virus–host interactions, we explored de novo infection of human hepatocyte-like HepaRG cells with authentic HBV and naive woodchucks with WHV. HepaRG were analyzed from several minutes post exposure to HBV onwards, whereas woodchuck liver biopsies at 1 or 3 h and 6 weeks post infection with WHV. Inverse PCR and clonal sequencing of the amplicons were applied to identify virus–host genomic junctions. HBV and WHV DNA and their replication intermediates became detectable in one hour after virus exposure. Concomitantly, HBV DNA integration into various host genes was detected. Notably, junctions of HBV X gene with retrotransposon sequences, such as LINE1 and LINE2, became prominent shortly after infection. In woodchucks, insertion of WHV X and preS sequences into host genome was evident at 1 and 3 h post infection (h.p.i.), confirming that hepadnavirus under natural conditions integrates into hepatocyte DNA soon after invasion. The HBV and WHV X gene enhancer II/core promotor sequence most often formed initial junctions with host DNA. Moreover, multiple virus–virus DNA fusions appeared from 1 h.p.i. onwards in both infected hepatocytes and woodchuck livers. In summary, HBV DNA integrates almost immediately after infection with a variety of host’s sequences, among which tandemly repeating non-coding DNAs are common. This study revealed that HBV can engage mobile genetic elements from the beginning of infection to induce pro-oncogenic perturbations throughout the host genome. Such swift virus insertion was also evident in natural hepadnaviral infection in woodchucks

    Current Understanding of the Impact of Childhood Obesity on the Foot and Lower Limb

    Childhood obesity has emerged in recent years as a major public health problem. As this continues to concern across local, national and international populations, and as our understanding of obesity advances, access to multi-disciplinary care and understanding of the complications is warranted. Recent findings have suggested that the musculoskeletal system is one of the multiple body systems compromised by obesity and that aberrant biomechanical function may be a precursor to the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms. This review will consider childhood obesity and its impact on the paediatric foot and lower limb through examination of literature on foot structure and biomechanics of gait. An overview of evidence-based management is out with the context of this review, however some recommendations for clinical practice will be proposed

    Tsunami vulnerability of buildings and people in South Java ? field observations after the July 2006 Java tsunami

    International audienceA team of scientists from New Zealand and Indonesia undertook a reconnaissance mission to the South Java area affected by the tsunami of 17 July 2006. The team used GPS-based surveying equipment to measure ground profiles and inundation depths along 17 transects across affected areas near the port city of Cilacap and the resort town of Pangandaran. The purpose of the work was to acquire data for calibration of models used to estimate tsunami inundations, casualty rates and damage levels. Additional information was gathered from interviews with eyewitnesses. The degree of damage observed was diverse, being primarily dependant on water depth and the building construction type. Water depths were typically 2 to 4 m where housing was seriously damaged. Damage levels ranged from total for older brick houses, to about 50% for newer buildings with rudimentary reinforced-concrete beams and columns, to 5?20% for engineered residential houses and multi-storey hotels with heavier RC columns. "Punchout" of weak brick walls was widespread. Despite various natural warning signs very few people were alerted to the impending tsunami. Hence, the death toll was significant, with average death and injury rates both being about 10% of the people exposed, for water depths of about 3 m

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer Calibrator Catalog

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) archive of observations between 1998 and 2005 is examined for objects appropriate for calibration of optical long-baseline interferometer observations - stars that are predictably point-like and single. Approximately 1,400 nights of data on 1,800 objects were examined for this investigation. We compare those observations to an intensively studied object that is a suitable calibrator, HD217014, and statistically compare each candidate calibrator to that object by computing both a Mahalanobis distance and a Principal Component Analysis. Our hypothesis is that the frequency distribution of visibility data associated with calibrator stars differs from non-calibrator stars such as binary stars. Spectroscopic binaries resolved by PTI, objects known to be unsuitable for calibrator use, are similarly tested to establish detection limits of this approach. From this investigation, we find more than 350 observed stars suitable for use as calibrators (with an additional 140\approx 140 being rejected), corresponding to 95\gtrsim 95% sky coverage for PTI. This approach is noteworthy in that it rigorously establishes calibration sources through a traceable, empirical methodology, leveraging the predictions of spectral energy distribution modeling but also verifying it with the rich body of PTI's on-sky observations.Comment: 100 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables; to appear in the May 2008ApJS, v176n

    Trumpler 20 - an old and rich open cluster

    We show that the open cluster Trumpler 20, contrary to the earlier findings, is actually an old Galactic open cluster. New CCD photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy are used to derive the main parameters of this cluster. At [Fe/H]=-0.11 for a single red giant star, the metallicity is slightly subsolar. The best fit to the color-magnitude diagrams is achieved using a 1.3 Gyr isochrone with convective overshoot. The cluster appears to have a significant reddening at E(B-V)=0.46 (for B0 spectral type), although for red giants this high reddening yields the color temperature exceeding the spectroscopic T_eff by about 200 K. Trumpler 20 is a very rich open cluster, containing at least 700 members brighter than M_V=+4. It may extend over the field-of-view available in our study at 20'x20'.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRA

This paper addresses this gap with a log analysis study of eBook access at the library of the University of Waikato. This in-depth analysis covers a period spanning 10 years of eBook use at this university. We draw conclusions about the use of eBooks at this institution and compare the results with other published studies of eBook usage at tertiary institutes

    Spectroscopy and Time Variability of Absorption Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant

    We present high resolution (R~75,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) Ca II λ\lambda3933.663 and Na I λλ\lambda\lambda5889.951, 5895.924 spectra of 68 stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. The spectra comprise the most complete high resolution, high S/N, optical survey of early type stars in this region of the sky. A subset of the sight lines has been observed at multiple epochs, 1993/1994 and 1996. Of the thirteen stars observed twice, seven have spectra revealing changes in the equivalent width and/or velocity structure of lines, most of which arise from remnant gas. Such time variability has been reported previously for the sight lines towards HD 72089 and HD 72997 by Danks & Sembach (1995) and for HD 72127 by Hobbs et al. (1991). We have confirmed the ongoing time variability of these spectra and present new evidence of variability in the spectra of HD 73658, HD 74455, HD 75309 and HD 75821. We have tabulated Na I and Ca II absorption line information for the sight lines in our sample to serve as a benchmark for further investigations of the dynamics and evolution of the Vela SNR.Comment: 8 pages of text, 4 tables, 16 pages of figures Accepted and to be published in ApJ
