    Virus Replication as a Phenotypic Version of Polynucleotide Evolution

    In this paper we revisit and adapt to viral evolution an approach based on the theory of branching process advanced by Demetrius, Schuster and Sigmund ("Polynucleotide evolution and branching processes", Bull. Math. Biol. 46 (1985) 239-262), in their study of polynucleotide evolution. By taking into account beneficial effects we obtain a non-trivial multivariate generalization of their single-type branching process model. Perturbative techniques allows us to obtain analytical asymptotic expressions for the main global parameters of the model which lead to the following rigorous results: (i) a new criterion for "no sure extinction", (ii) a generalization and proof, for this particular class of models, of the lethal mutagenesis criterion proposed by Bull, Sanju\'an and Wilke ("Theory of lethal mutagenesis for viruses", J. Virology 18 (2007) 2930-2939), (iii) a new proposal for the notion of relaxation time with a quantitative prescription for its evaluation, (iv) the quantitative description of the evolution of the expected values in in four distinct "stages": extinction threshold, lethal mutagenesis, stationary "equilibrium" and transient.     Low nadir CD4+ T-cell counts predict gut dysbiosis in HIV-1 infection

    Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection causes severe gut and systemic immune damage, but its effects on the gut microbiome remain unclear. Previous shotgun metagenomic studies in HIV-negative subjects linked low-microbial gene counts (LGC) to gut dysbiosis in diseases featuring intestinal inflammation. Using a similar approach in 156 subjects with different HIV-1 phenotypes, we found a strong, independent, dose-effect association between nadir CD4+ T-cell counts and LGC. As in other diseases involving intestinal inflammation, the gut microbiomes of subjects with LGC were enriched in gram-negative Bacteroides, acetogenic bacteria and Proteobacteria, which are able to metabolize reactive oxygen and nitrogen species; and were depleted in oxygen-sensitive methanogenic archaea and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Interestingly, subjects with LGC also showed increased butyrate levels in direct fecal measurements, consistent with enrichment in Roseburia intestinalis despite reductions in other butyrate producers. The microbiomes of subjects with LGC were also enriched in bacterial virulence factors, as well as in genes associated with beta-lactam, lincosamide, tetracycline, and macrolide resistance. Thus, low nadir CD4+ T-cell counts, rather than HIV-1 serostatus per se, predict the presence of gut dysbiosis in HIV-1 infected subjects. Such dysbiosis does not display obvious HIV-specific features; instead, it shares many similarities with other diseases featuring gut inflammation

    VIII Encuentro de Docentes e Investigadores en Historia del Diseño, la Arquitectura y la Ciudad

    Acta de congresoLa conmemoración de los cien años de la Reforma Universitaria de 1918 se presentó como una ocasión propicia para debatir el rol de la historia, la teoría y la crítica en la formación y en la práctica profesional de diseñadores, arquitectos y urbanistas. En ese marco el VIII Encuentro de Docentes e Investigadores en Historia del Diseño, la Arquitectura y la Ciudad constituyó un espacio de intercambio y reflexión cuya realización ha sido posible gracias a la colaboración entre Facultades de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Diseño de la Universidad Nacional y la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Córdoba, contando además con la activa participación de mayoría de las Facultades, Centros e Institutos de Historia de la Arquitectura del país y la región. Orientado en su convocatoria tanto a docentes como a estudiantes de Arquitectura y Diseño Industrial de todos los niveles de la FAUD-UNC promovió el debate de ideas a partir de experiencias concretas en instancias tales como mesas temáticas de carácter interdisciplinario, que adoptaron la modalidad de presentación de ponencias, entre otras actividades. En el ámbito de VIII Encuentro, desarrollado en la sede Ciudad Universitaria de Córdoba, se desplegaron numerosas posiciones sobre la enseñanza, la investigación y la formación en historia, teoría y crítica del diseño, la arquitectura y la ciudad; sumándose el aporte realizado a través de sus respectivas conferencias de Ana Clarisa Agüero, Bibiana Cicutti, Fernando Aliata y Alberto Petrina. El conjunto de ponencias que se publican en este Repositorio de la UNC son el resultado de dos intensas jornadas de exposiciones, cuyos contenidos han posibilitado actualizar viejos dilemas y promover nuevos debates. El evento recibió el apoyo de las autoridades de la FAUD-UNC, en especial de la Secretaría de Investigación y de la Biblioteca de nuestra casa, como así también de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la UCC; va para todos ellos un especial agradecimiento

    Anticipating Mobile Radio Networks Key Performance Indicators with Transfer Learning

    The use of artificial intelligence is foreseen to be pervasive in future mobile radio networks, enabling dynamic and proactive radio resource provisioning and allocation as well as end-to-end optimization of the network architecture. Current approaches in mobile radio networks commonly assume having a complete batch of data on the specific network element when optimizing and adapting the network working configuration. Such a pipeline is at odds with the increasing complexity and extreme flexibility of 5G and next generation systems where reconfiguration decisions might be taken rather frequently, and with only few data available. In this paper, we focus on the problem of predicting channel quality and average number of active user equipment when a limited amount of data is available from the cell to predict and a high number of predictions need to be carried out simultaneously. We propose a transfer learning framework based on one dimensional convolutional neural networks and explore several models with different complexity overhead for the prediction task across 100 cells. The performance of the proposed framework is validated against classical machine learning approaches in terms of accuracy and computation time when varying the amount of data available for training. Achieved results indicate that transfer learning outperforms the 'non-transfer' approaches, specifically when the amount of data available from the cell to predict is scarce

    Transfer learning for multi-step resource utilization prediction

    Accurate and efficient resource utilization predictions are of vital importance for the future generation of mobile wireless networks. By anticipating network resource demand, the operator can perform proactive resource allocation and predictive network control to improve network resource efficiency. In this paper, we exploit deep and transfer learning algorithms for multi-step resource utilization prediction in radio networks. In particular, we propose long short-term memory network-based architectures with transfer learning for the multi-step prediction task, in order to address scalability, computation time and data storage limitations of current implementations for large-scale networks. We carry out extensive experiments on a dataset collected from an LTE field network. When predicting physical resource block percentage utilization, our approach achieves state of the art results with root mean square error below 12 for a four-hour-ahead prediction, in half of the computation time required by deep learning methods without transfer learning

    A Comprehensive Review of Radiohumeral Synovial Plicae for a Correct Clinical Interpretation in Intractable Lateral Epicondylitis

    Purpose of Review: Radiohumeral synovial plicae (RHSP) have been studied by different authors in different ways; in spite of this, the evidence is poor and the results are controversial and inconclusive even when it comes to referring to this elbow structure. The aim of this article is to review the embryologic development, anatomy and histology, pathophysiologic features, clinical manifestations, physical examination, imaging findings, and treatment of radiohumeral synovial plicae, for their correct clinical interpretation in patients with intractable lateral epicondylitis. Recent Findings: Radiohumeral synovial plicae syndrome (RHSPS) can cause intractable lateral epicondylitis and can be easily confused with other clinical conditions affecting the elbow. Many clinicians are not familiar with radiohumeral synovial plica syndrome since there are not many studies about it and previous reports do not seem to reach a consensus. Although its role in elbow injuries and epicondylitis is accepted and its surgical treatment is effective, there is no clear consensus about clinically relevant aspects. Summary: RHSP are remnants of normal embryo development of the articular synovial membrane with different anatomical locations, size and shape. Traumatism or overuse can turn RHSP into symptomatic structures at any age and can be compressed between the radial and humeral heads during movement. This compression can cause pain and other symptoms such as snapping, catching, mobility restriction, pitching, clicking, locking, blockage, popping and swelling. Radiohumeral synovial plica syndrome (RHSPS) may be an isolated condition or it can be associated with other elbow abnormalities. The findings on physical examination and imaging diagnosis are multiple and variable. Nowadays, RHSPS are quite unknown and previous reports do not seem to agree, leading to misdiagnoses as epicondylitis and making this structure the main cause of some cases of \u201cintractable lateral epicondylitis\u201d. The outcomes of surgical treatments are quite promising although more, higher quality research is needed. Taking this into account, this review is meant to be a starting point for new anatomical and clinical studies
