    Minimally invasive surgical techniques for liver tumors are gaining increased acceptance as an alternative to traditional resections by laparotomy. In this article we describe a laparoscopic liver resection of a metastatic lesion in a patient primarily operated for colorectal cancer. The resection was conducted as a single port procedure through the stoma aperture at time of reversal of the diversion ileostomy. Sigle incision liver resections may be less traumatic than conventional laparoscopy and could be applied in selected patients with both benign and malignant liver tumors

    Vanishing of Gravitational Particle Production in the Formation of Cosmic Strings

    We consider the gravitationally induced particle production from the quantum vacuum which is defined by a free, massless and minimally coupled scalar field during the formation of a gauge cosmic string. Previous discussions of this topic estimate the power output per unit length along the string to be of the order of 106810^{68} ergs/sec/cm in the s-channel.     Comparison of birth weight between school health records and medical birth records in Denmark:determinants of discrepancies

    OBJECTIVE: To compare reported birth weight (BW) information in school health records with BW from medical birth records, and to investigate if maternal and offspring characteristics were associated with any discrepancies. DESIGN: Register-based cohort study. SETTING: Denmark, 1973–1991. PARTICIPANTS: The study was based on BW recorded in the Copenhagen School Health Records Register (CSHRR) and in The Medical Birth Register (MBR). The registers were linked via the Danish personal identification number. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Statistical comparisons of BW in the registers were performed using t tests, Pearson's correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots and κ coefficients. Odds of BW discrepancies >100 g were examined by logistic regressions. RESULTS: The study population included 47 534 children. From 1973 to 1979 when BW was grouped in 500 g intervals in the MBR, mean BW differed significantly between the registers. During 1979–1991 when BW was recorded in 10 and 1 g intervals, mean BW did not significantly differ between the two registers. BW from both registers was highly correlated (0.93–0.97). Odds of a BW discrepancy significantly increased with parity, the child's age at recall and by marital status (children of married women had the highest odds). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, BW information in school health records agreed very well with BW from medical birth records, suggesting that reports of BWs in school health records in Copenhagen, Denmark generally are valid

    Antenatal thyroid hormone therapy and antithyroid drug use in Norway from 2004 to 2018

    Objective Thyroid disease during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and suboptimal fetal development. During the last decades, guidelines for diagnosing thyroid disease during pregnancy have changed considerably and there has been increased awareness. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of thyroid disease treatment over time among pregnant women in Norway. Design Nationwide register-based study. Methods We combined historical data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and the Norwegian Prescription Database, identifying pregnant women using thyroid therapy from 2004 to 2018. Results A total of 855,067 pregnancies were included in the analyses. The proportion of women using thyroid hormone replacement therapy during pregnancy increased from 1.46% (n  = 800) in 2004 to 3.57% (n  = 1940) in 2018. The proportion of women using antithyroid medications also increased from 0.04% (n  = 20) in 2004 to 0.10% (n  = 56). During these 15 years, the mean maternal age increased by 0.9 years. When adjusting for age, the risk for being on thyroid hormone replacement therapy during pregnancy increased by an average of 5% per year (odds ratio: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.05–1.05). Conclusion During the recent 15 years, there has been a substantial increase in the use of thyroid hormone therapy in Norwegian pregnant women. We speculate that this could be due to an increased awareness in combination with overdiagnosis because of inappropriate diagnostic criteria. To truly understand the possible causes and consequences of this development, further research is warranted.publishedVersio

    Interplay between chronic widespread pain and lifestyle factors on the risk of type 2 diabetes: longitudinal data from the Norwegian HUNT Study

    Introduction Chronic widespread pain (CWP) and diabetes commonly co-occur; however, it is unclear whether CWP infers an additional risk for diabetes among those with known risk factors for type 2 diabetes. We aimed to examine if CWP magnifies the effect of adverse lifestyle factors on the risk of diabetes. Research design and methods The study comprised data on 25 528 adults in the Norwegian HUNT Study without diabetes at baseline (2006–2008). We calculated adjusted risk ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs for diabetes at follow-up (2017–2019), associated with CWP and body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and insomnia symptoms. The relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) was calculated to investigate the synergistic effect between CWP and adverse lifestyle factors. Results Compared with the reference group without chronic pain and no adverse lifestyle factors, those with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 with and without CWP had RRs for diabetes of 10.85 (95% CI 7.83 to 15.05) and 8.87 (95% CI 6.49 to 12.12), respectively; those with physical activity <2 hours/ week with and without CWP had RRs for diabetes of 2.26 (95% CI 1.78 to 2.88) and 1.54 (95% CI 1.24 to 1.93), respectively; and those with insomnia symptoms with and without CWP had RRs for diabetes of 1.31 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.60) and 1.27 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.56), respectively. There was little evidence of synergistic effect between CWP and BMI ≥30 kg/m2 (RERI=1.66, 95%CI −0.44 to 3.76), low physical activity (RERI=0.37, 95%CI −0.29 to 1.03) or insomnia symptoms (RERI=−0.09, 95%CI −0.51 to 0.34) on the risk of diabetes. Conclusions These findings show no clear interaction between CWP and adverse lifestyle factors on the risk of diabetes

    Mercury in human brain, blood, muscle and toenails in relation to exposure: an autopsy study

    Background: The main forms of mercury (Hg) exposure in the general population are methylmercury (MeHg) from seafood, inorganic mercury (I-Hg) from food, and mercury vapor (Hg0) from dental amalgam restorations. While the distribution of MeHg in the body is described by a one compartment model, the distribution of I-Hg after exposure to elemental mercury is more complex, and there is no biomarker for I-Hg in the brain. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationships between on the one hand MeHg and I-Hg in human brain and other tissues, including blood, and on the other Hg exposure via dental amalgam in a fish-eating population. In addition, the use of blood and toenails as biological indicator media for inorganic and organic mercury (MeHg) in the tissues was evaluated. Methods: Samples of blood, brain (occipital lobe cortex), pituitary, thyroid, abdominal muscle and toenails were collected at autopsy of 30 deceased individuals, age from 47 to 91 years of age. Concentrations of total-Hg and I-Hg in blood and brain cortex were determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry and total-Hg in other tissues by sector field inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). Results: The median concentrations of MeHg (total-Hg minus I-Hg) and I-Hg in blood were 2.2 and 1.0 μg/L, and in occipital lobe cortex 4 and 5 μg/kg, respectively. There was a significant correlation between MeHg in blood and occipital cortex. Also, total-Hg in toenails correlated with MeHg in both blood and occipital lobe. I-Hg in both blood and occipital cortex, as well as total-Hg in pituitary and thyroid were strongly associated with the number of dental amalgam surfaces at the time of death. Conclusion: In a fish-eating population, intake of MeHg via the diet has a marked impact on the MeHg concentration in the brain, while exposure to dental amalgam restorations increases the I-Hg concentrations in the brain. Discrimination between mercury species is necessary to evaluate the impact on Hg in the brain of various sources of exposure, in particular, dental amalgam exposure

It builds upon Linked Data technologies, targets data scientists/engineers and data integration application developers, and aims to provide a solution for simplifying tasks such as data transformation, querying, entity extraction, data visualization, crawling, etc. This paper focuses on the overall architecture of the LD-AppStore, basic data operations supported by the current prototype, and outlines the demonstration of the prototype.publishedVersio
