The Impact of Science on Society
Four speeches delivered as part of a public lecture series to assess the impact of science on society are presented. The computerization of society, space exploration and habitation, the mechanisms of technological change, and cultural responses are addressed
Exploring the Referral and Usage of Science Fiction in HCI Literature
Research on science fiction (sci-fi) in scientific publications has indicated
the usage of sci-fi stories, movies or shows to inspire novel Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) research. Yet no studies have analysed sci-fi in a top-ranked
computer science conference at present. For that reason, we examine the CHI
main track for the presence and nature of sci-fi referrals in relationship to
HCI research. We search for six sci-fi terms in a dataset of 5812 CHI main
proceedings and code the context of 175 sci-fi referrals in 83 papers indexed
in the CHI main track. In our results, we categorize these papers into five
contemporary HCI research themes wherein sci-fi and HCI interconnect: 1)
Theoretical Design Research; 2) New Interactions; 3) Human-Body Modification or
Extension; 4) Human-Robot Interaction and Artificial Intelligence; and 5)
Visions of Computing and HCI. In conclusion, we discuss results and
implications located in the promising arena of sci-fi and HCI research.Comment: v1: 20 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, HCI International 2018 accepted

Использование цифрового двойника солнечной панели для анализа выработки электроэнергии солнечной электростанцией
A method of PV array-based calculation has been proposed, implemented and tested. The results showed the following. Array-based calculation is able to provide quite accurate results in Pmpp values for array, but defective modules with some electrical issues in particular array could be identified only with some additional modulebased analysis
Beyond Speculative Robot Ethics
In this article we develop a dialogue model for robot technology experts and designated users to discuss visions on the future of robotics in long-term care. Our vision assessment study aims for more distinguished and more informed visions on future robots. Surprisingly, our experiment also lead to some promising co-designed robot concepts in which jointly articulated moral guidelines are embedded. With our model we think to have designed an interesting response on a recent call for a less speculative ethics of technology by encouraging discussions about the quality of positive and negative visions on the future of robotics.

Exchange Interaction and in Alkaline-earth-metal-oxide-based DMS without Magnetic Impurities: First Principle Pseudo-SIC and Monte Carlo Calculation
The prospects of half-metallic ferromagnetism being induced by the
incorporation of C atoms into alkaline-earth-metal-oxides are investigated by
the first principle calculation. The origin of the ferromagnetism is discussed
through the calculation of the electronic structure and exchange coupling
constant by using the pseudo-potential-like self-interaction-corrected local
spin density method. The Curie temperature () is also predicted by
employing the Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that by taking the electron
self-interaction into account, the half-metallic ferromagnetism induced by C in
the host materials is more stabilized in comparison with the standard LDA case,
and the C's electron states in the bandgap become more localized resulting
in the predominance of the short-ranged exchange interaction. While the
ferromagnetism in MgOC is stabilized due to the exchange
interaction of the -nearest neighbor pairs and might be suppressed by the
anti-ferromagnetic super-exchange interaction at higher , the ferromagnetism
in CaOC, SrOC, and BaOC is stabilized by
both the - and -nearest neighbor pairs, and monotonously
increases with the C concentration.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Методика и программное средство поиска аномалий в данных телеметрии солнечной электростанции на основе анализа нормализованных значений мощности
Objectives. In connection with the increase in the number of solar power plants, the automation of monitoring their performance becomes an urgent task. The search for anomalies in the operation of solar power plants is one of the main components of monitoring. The purpose of the study is to develop new methods and software algorithms for finding anomalies in the operation of solar panels based on the results of a digital twin created and trained according to the telemetry data of a solar power plant.Methods. The developed technique is based on statistical studies of deviations of power values at the point of maximum efficient operation of the solar panel calculated by the digital twin. In addition, a normalized value of the power in the maximum efficient operation of the solar panel was introduced for more accurate clustering and anomaly search.Results. Using the developed method of static search for half a year of observations, 18 anomalies were detected in the operation of the solar panels of the power plant. All cases are analyzed for the causes of anomalies in the operation of solar panels.Conclusion. It has been established that when using normalized power values in the analysis of deviations at the point of maximum power PN, it is possible to detect abnormal operation of individual panels. The level of deviation of the normalized values at the point of maximum power was calculated, indicating the presence of an anomaly in the operation of solar panel.
Thinking through time: From collective memories to collective futures
In this chapter I look at the links between collective memory and the imagination of collective futures. Drawing on works on imagination and autobiographical memory, I first discuss the role of past experiences in imagining the future. I then explore the consequences of such a perspective for collective memories and collective futures, which will lead me to argue that the former provides the basis for the latter. Three case studies are presented, each illustrating a different type of relation between collective memory and collective imagination: 1) collective memory as a frame of reference to imagine the future; 2) collective memory as a source of experiences and examples to imagine what is likely, possible or desirable; and 3) collective memory as generalisable experience from which representations of the world – Personal World Philosophies – are constructed and in turn used to imagine the collective future. This will lead me to the conclusion that representations of the world are characterised by “temporal heteroglossia”, the simultaneous presence of multiple periods of time, and that they mediate the relation between collective memory and collective imagination, allowing us to “think through time”
Smart cities in a smart world
Very often the concept of smart city is strongly related to the flourishing of mobile applications, stressing the technological aspects and a top-down approach of high-tech centralized control systems capable of resolving all the urban issues, completely forgetting the essence of a city with its connected problems. The real challenge in future years will be a huge increase in the urban population and the changes this will produce in energy and resource consumption. It is fundamental to manage this phenomenon with clever approaches in order to guarantee a better management of resources and their sustainable access to present and future generations. This chapter develops some considerations on these aspects, trying to insert the technological issues within a framework closer to planning and with attention to the social impact
