    Eco-Innovation Indices as Tools for Measuring Eco-Innovation

    Measuring eco-innovation helps us understand the overall trends and raises awareness in society. Measuring eco-innovation at the national level and making comparisons across countries may allow us to benchmark performance and foster policy learning. This paper assesses two indices developed in two different regions: The ASEM Eco-Innovation Index (ASEI) by the ASEM SMEs Eco-Innovation Center, based in Republic of Korea; and the Eco-Innovation Scoreboard (Eco-IS) developed by the Eco-Innovation Observatory, based in the European Union. This paper aims to examine and compare the features of both and attempts to obtain insights on their strengths and weaknesses. Towards this aim, our paper assesses those scoreboards against four criteria stemming from innovation analysis: (1) relevance of areas and stakeholders covered; (2) ability to indicate changes; (3) directions towards common goals; and (4) ability to facilitate further changes. We conclude both are promising, despite data shortages, and have great potential to contribute towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly with regard to the SDGs on sustainable industrialization and sustainable consumption and production. In comparison, the ASEI covers more countries than the Eco-IS. However, the ASEI has limitations on measuring indicators due to limited data availability in Asian countries. The Eco-IS is closely linked with the regional and national policies for eco-innovation in Europe, while the ASEI’s impact appears more limited, as of now. In conclusion, the research results give insights into key areas, goals and applications of eco-innovation indices, and can help upgrading eco-innovation indices. This research helps interpret the scores of two indices better and facilitate application of the scores in the multiple ways. It is expected that this research contributes to developing and modifying a global eco-innovation index and enhancing the ability of these indices to facilitate eco-innovation strategies at national levels and across relevant actors

    CSGM Designer: a platform for designing cross-species intron-spanning genic markers linked with genome information of legumes.

    BackgroundGenetic markers are tools that can facilitate molecular breeding, even in species lacking genomic resources. An important class of genetic markers is those based on orthologous genes, because they can guide hypotheses about conserved gene function, a situation that is well documented for a number of agronomic traits. For under-studied species a key bottleneck in gene-based marker development is the need to develop molecular tools (e.g., oligonucleotide primers) that reliably access genes with orthology to the genomes of well-characterized reference species.ResultsHere we report an efficient platform for the design of cross-species gene-derived markers in legumes. The automated platform, named CSGM Designer (URL: http://tgil.donga.ac.kr/CSGMdesigner), facilitates rapid and systematic design of cross-species genic markers. The underlying database is composed of genome data from five legume species whose genomes are substantially characterized. Use of CSGM is enhanced by graphical displays of query results, which we describe as "circular viewer" and "search-within-results" functions. CSGM provides a virtual PCR representation (eHT-PCR) that predicts the specificity of each primer pair simultaneously in multiple genomes. CSGM Designer output was experimentally validated for the amplification of orthologous genes using 16 genotypes representing 12 crop and model legume species, distributed among the galegoid and phaseoloid clades. Successful cross-species amplification was obtained for 85.3% of PCR primer combinations.ConclusionCSGM Designer spans the divide between well-characterized crop and model legume species and their less well-characterized relatives. The outcome is PCR primers that target highly conserved genes for polymorphism discovery, enabling functional inferences and ultimately facilitating trait-associated molecular breeding

    Solution-processed germanium nanowire-positioned Schottky solar cells

    Germanium nanowire (GeNW)-positioned Schottky solar cell was fabricated by a solution process. A GeNW-containing solution was spread out onto asymmetric metal electrodes to produce a rectifying current flow. Under one-sun illumination, the GeNW-positioned Schottky solar cell yields an open-circuit voltage of 177 mV and a short-circuit current of 19.2 nA. Schottky and ohmic contacts between a single GeNW and different metal electrodes were systematically investigated. This solution process may provide a route to the cost-effective nanostructure solar architecture

    Crane-powered pectus excavatum repair: the NeoPectus surgery

    IntroductionThe conventional technique for pectus excavatum repair was pushing up the depressed chest wall by turning over the convexity of the bent pectus bar. We developed a new concept in which a total crane lift was used as the source of power to elevate the depressed sternum without using pectus bar leverage. This study aims to verify the efficacy of exclusively crane-powered pectus excavatum repair in recent years.MethodsAmong the 3622 pectus deformity repairs since 1999, 691 cases repaired with the total crane power between 2017 and 2022 were enrolled. The mean age was 12.0 years (3–45). The operative technique involved wire/screw crane elevation of the sternum, the entire chest wall remodeling with the cross or parallel bars, the bridge/claw bar fixations, and other adjunctive techniques. Outcome analysis included morphological variations, patterns of pectus bar placement, and complication rates.ResultsThe crane technique and pectoscopy (100%) were used. The bar placements were parallel (22.0%) and cross-bar (47.5%). The bar fixations were the claw fixators for a single bar (30.5%) and the bridge plates for multiple bars (69.5%). The flare-buster and magic strings were liberally used. No serious complications or catastrophic events occurred, but minor complications occurred in 16.9%: pneumothorax in 7.4% (51), pleural effusion in 1.6% (11), and wound problems in 0.4% (3). There was no case of bar displacement.DiscussionThe crane-powered pectus excavatum repair showed excellent results with minimal complications and no bar displacement. This innovative approach, part of the NeoPectus surgery, represents a significant advancement in correcting pectus excavatum deformities by utilizing a crane machine to elevate the chest wall

    Voice interfaces, such as those provided by virtual assistant applications on smartphones, smart speakers, and other devices utilize natural language when providing responses to user queries. Per techniques of this disclosure, user interaction patterns are used to generate natural language responses to queries posed over a voice user interface. With user permission and express consent, data that pertain to prior user interaction, e.g., text entry such as search terms entered; other input operations such as clicks, taps, swipes, mouse hovers; viewports for the user, etc. are obtained. For ease of interaction, such permission is obtained, e.g., at initial setup, and is modifiable. Such data is analyzed to derive insight into context-based topics of interest to users. User preferences gathered across multiple contexts are utilized to generate natural language responses for voice-based user interaction

    Anti-diabetic effect of Cyclo-His-Pro (CHP)-enriched yeast hydrolysate in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice

    The present study was designed to investigate the hypoglycemic effects of the daily oral dose of 0.50 to 0.75 g/kg of yeast hydrolysate (YH) containing high Cyclo-His-Pro (51.0 mg CHP/g YH) on normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats for 14 days. In STZ-induced diabetic rats, after administrations of the YH for 14 days, the body weight gain was significantly increased in dose dependent manner, and the plasma glucose levels were decreased approximately (60%) as compared to the STZ induced diabetic control group. Glucose level showed significant differences between the diabetic control (DC) and the YH administered groups in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (P<0.05). Results of the OGTT showed a significant decrease in the area under curve (AUC) value of YH supplemented groups as compared to the DC group.     Developing radically innovative products is an important issue for many firms. This study addresses how to organize and manage new product development teams to develop radically innovative products. We hypothesize that there exists the optimal combination of conditions to develop radically innovative products through the use of quantum evolution theory found in bioecology and test empirically using the joint covariations approach. Our results show that radically innovative product can be developed in the new product development teams with the combination of high diversity, high integration, and high autonomy

    Pattern of distant recurrence according to the molecular subtypes in Korean women with breast cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Distant recurrence is one of the most important risk factors in overall survival, and distant recurrence is related to a complex biologic interaction of seed and soil factors. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between the molecular subtypes and patterns of distant recurrence in patients with breast cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In an investigation of 313 women with breast cancer who underwent surgery from 1994 and 2000, the expressions of estrogen and progestrone receptor (ER/PR), and human epithelial receptor-2 (HER2) were evaluated. The subtypes were defined as luminal-A, luminal-HER2, HER2-enriched, and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) according to ER, PR, and HER2 status.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Bone was the most common site of distant recurrence. The incidence of first distant recurrence site was significantly different among the subtypes. Brain metastasis was more frequent in the luminal-HER2 and TNBC subtypes. In subgroup analysis, overall survival in patients with distant recurrence after 24 months after surgery was significantly different among the subtypes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Organ-specific metastasis may depend on the molecular subtype of breast cancer. Tailored strategies against distant metastasis concerning the molecular subtypes in breast cancer may be considered.</p

    Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage in a 39-year-old Woman: Unusual Initial Presentation of Microscopic Polyangiitis

    Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a necrotizing vasculitis involving the small vessels without granulomatous inflammation. Most MPA initially presents with renal involvement without pulmonary involvement. Isolated and initially presenting alveolar hemorrhage is very rare. The patient was a 39-year-old female with a progressive cough, dyspnea, and blood-tinged sputum for the previous 5 days. We determined that her condition was MPA though VATS lung biopsy and renal biopsy. After 2 months of steroid therapy, the chest lesions had improved. We report here a rare case of MPA with isolated and initial involvement of the lung with a review of the literature
