    Void Analysis of Hadronic Density Fluctuations at Phase Transition

    The event-to-event fluctuations of hadron multiplicities are studied for a quark system undergoing second-order phase transition to hadrons. Emphasis is placed on the search for an observable signature that is realistic for heavy-ion collisions. It is suggested that in the 2-dimensional y-phi space the produced particles selected in a very narrow p_T window may exhibit clustering patterns even when integrated over the entire emission time. Using the Ising model to simulate the critical phenomenon and taking into account a p_T distribution that depends on the emission time, we study in the framework of the void analysis proposed earlier and find scaling behavior. The scaling exponents turn out to be larger than the ones found before for pure configurations without mixing. The signature is robust in that it is insensitive to the precise scheme of simulating time evolution. Thus it should reveal whether or not the dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions is a quark-gluon plasma before hadronization.Comment: 11 pages in LaTeX + 6 figures in p

    Scaling Distributions of Quarks, Mesons and Proton for all pTp_T, Energy and Centrality

    We present the evidences for the existence of a universal scaling behavior of the production of π0\pi^0 at all transverse momenta in heavy-ion collisions at all centralities and all collision energies. The corresponding scaling behavior of the quarks is then derived just before the quarks recombine with antiquarks to form the pions. The degradation effect of the dense medium on the quark pTp_T is derived from the scaling distribution. In the recombination model it is then possible to calculate the pTp_T distributions of the produced proton and kaon, which are scaling also. Experimentally verifiable predictions are made.     Abnormal arterial-venous fusions and fate specification in mouse embryos lacking blood flow.

    The functions of blood flow in the morphogenesis of mammalian arteries and veins are not well understood. We examined the development of the dorsal aorta (DA) and the cardinal vein (CV) in Ncx1 -/- mutants, which lack blood flow due to a deficiency in a sodium calcium ion exchanger expressed specifically in the heart. The mutant DA and CV were abnormally connected. The endothelium of the Ncx1 -/- mutant DA lacked normal expression of the arterial markers ephrin-B2 and Connexin-40. Notch1 activation, known to promote arterial specification, was decreased in mutant DA endothelial cells (ECs), which ectopically expressed the venous marker Coup-TFII. These findings suggest that flow has essential functions in the DA by promoting arterial and suppressing venous marker expression. In contrast, flow plays a lesser role in the CV, because expression of arterial-venous markers in CV ECs was not as dramatically affected in Ncx1 -/- mutants. We propose a molecular mechanism by which blood flow mediates DA and CV morphogenesis, by regulating arterial-venous specification of DA ECs to ensure proper separation of the developing DA and CV

    Critical Fluctuation of Wind Reversals in Convective Turbulence

    The irregular reversals of wind direction in convective turbulence are found to have fluctuating intervals that can be related to critical behavior. It is shown that the net magnetization of a 2D Ising lattice of finite size fluctuates in the same way. Detrended fluctuation analysis of the wind reversal time series results in a scaling behavior that agrees with that of the Ising problem. The properties found suggest that the wind reversal phenomenon exhibits signs of self-organized criticality.Comment: 4 RevTeX pages + 3 figures in ep

    Stripe formation in bacterial systems with density-suppressed motility

    Engineered bacteria in which motility is reduced by local cell density generate periodic stripes of high and low density when spotted on agar plates. We study theoretically the origin and mechanism of this process in a kinetic model that includes growth and density-suppressed motility of the cells. The spreading of a region of immotile cells into an initially cell-free region is analyzed. From the calculated front profile we provide an analytic ansatz to determine the phase boundary between the stripe and the no-stripe phases.
