Reading Lists in Cambridge: A Standard System?
In June 2008 a committee of librarians from across the University convened to investigate ways of improving library services, with particular regard to elearning and the provision of services to undergraduates. Reading lists quickly emerged as the major factor in undergraduate library use, as influential on the types of resources used by undergraduates, and as an area where there was potential for an improvement to the student experience. One of the committeeâs recommendations was that an application be made for an Arcadia Fellowship to investigate issues surrounding the adoption of a standard system for dealing with reading lists. The proposal was felt to map well onto the core issues highlighted by the Arcadia Programme â particularly Changes in Higher Education, New generations of library users, Technology and Changing academic workflows. Telemedicine and primary health: The virtual doctor project Zambia
This paper is a commentary on a project application of telemedicine to alleviate primary health care problems in Lundazi district in the Eastern province of Zambia. The project dubbed 'The Virtual Doctor Project' will use hard body vehicles fitted with satellite communication devices and modern medical equipment to deliver primary health care services to some of the neediest areas of the country. The relevance and importance of the project lies in the fact that these areas are hard-to-reach due to rugged natural terrain and have very limited telecommunications infrastructure. The lack of these and other basic services makes it difficult for medical personnel to settle in these areas, which leads to an acute shortage of medical personnel. The paper presents this problem and how it is addressed by 'The Virtual Doctor Project', emphasizing that while the telemedicine concept is not new in sub-Saharan Africa, the combination of mobility and connectivity to service a number of villages 'on the go' is an important variation in the shift back to the 1978 Alma Ata principles of the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO). Design and application of convergent cellular automata
Systems made of many interacting elements may display unanticipated emergent properties. A system for which the desired properties are the same as those which emerge will be inherently robust. Currently available techniques for designing emergent properties are prohibitively costly for all but the simplest systems.
The self-assembly of biological cells into tissues and ultimately organisms is an example of a natural dynamic distributed system of which the primary emergent behaviour is a fully operational being. The distributed process that co-ordinates this self-assembly is morphogenesis. By analysing morphogenesis with a cellular automata model we deduce a means by which this self-organisation might be achieved.
This mechanism is then adapted to the design of self-organising patterns, reliable electronic systems and self-assembling systems. The limitations of the design algorithm are analysed, as is a means to overcome them. The cost of this algorithm is discussed and finally demonstrated with the design of a reliable arithmetic logic unit and a self-assembling, self-repairing and metamorphosising robot made of 12,000 cells
A Reflective Hybrid Approach to Connecting Leadership Style and Stakeholder Perspective
Using quantitative analysis and reflection techniques, we examine employee perception of leadership style and perceived results within organizations based in Whistler, Canada. We are primarily concerned with results in terms of organizational culture towards 3 key stakeholder groups, customers, community, and employees. The observed differences in results between transformational and transactional leadership provide a basis for enriching the mapping of leadership style to desired outcomes
