The Effect of Foreign Acquisition on Employment and Wages : Evidence from Finnish Establishments
The Role of Transporters in Future Chemotherapy
The expression of membrane transporter is often altered in cancer cells compared to their corresponding healthy cells. Since these proteins, classified into solute carriers (SLCs) and ATP-binding cassettes (ABCs), can carry not only endogenous compounds, nutrients, and metabolites, but also drugs across the cell membranes, they have a crucial role in drug exposure and clinical outcomes of chemotherapeutics. Curiously, up-regulation of SLCs can be exploited to deliver chemotherapeutics, their prodrugs, and diagnostic radio-tracers to gain cancer cell-selective targeting, as exemplified with L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1). SLCs can also be inhibited to limit the nutrient uptake of cancer cells and thus, cell growth and proliferation. Furthermore, LAT1 can be utilized to deliver ABC-inhibitors selectively into the cancer cells to block the efflux of other chemotherapeutics suffering from acquired or intrinsic efflux transport-related multidrug resistance (MDR). Taking into account the current literature, compounds that can affect transporter up- or down-regulation of transporters in a cancer cell-selective manner could be a valuable tool and promising chemotherapy form in the future
The Employment Effects of Low-Wage Subsidies
Low-wage subsidies are often proposed as a solution to the unemployment problem among the low skilled. Yet the empirical evidence on the effects of low-wage subsidies is surprisingly scarce. This paper examines the employment effects of a Finnish payroll tax subsidy scheme, which is targeted at the employers of older, full-time, low-wage workers. The system's clear eligibility criteria open up an opportunity for a reliable estimation of the causal impacts of the subsidy, using a difference-in-difference-in-differences approach. Our results indicate that the subsidy system had no effects on the employment rate. However, it appears to have increased the probability of part-time workers obtaining full-time employment.low-wage subsidies, employment, social security contributions

The Effect of Job Displacement on Couplesâ Fertility Decisions
This paper analyzes the effects of job displacement on fertility using Finnish longitudinal employer-employee data (FLEED) matched to birth records. We distinguish between male and female job losses. We focus on couples where one spouse has lost his/her job due to a plant closure or mass layoff and follow them for several years both before and following the job loss. As a comparison group we use similar couples that were not affected by job displacement. In order to examine the possible channels through which job loss affects fertility we examine also the effect on earnings, employment and divorce. The results show that a woman's own job loss decreases fertility mainly for highly educated women. For every 100 displaced females there are approximately 4 less children born. A man's job loss has no significant impact on completed fertility.

EnsimmÀisessÀ esseessÀ tutkitaan miten työvoiman rakenne on muuttunut Suomalaisissa toimipaikoissa viime vuosina. LisÀksi tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan miten yritysten tutkimus- ja kehittÀmistoiminnassa ja ulkomaan viennissÀ tapahtuneet muutokset selittÀvÀt toimipaikkojen työvoiman rakenteen kehitystÀ. Tulokset osoittavat, ettÀ ikÀÀntyvien (yli 45-vuotiaiden) ja korkeasti koulutettujen osuus yksityisen sektorin työntekijöistÀ on kasvanut vuosina 1988-2001. Regressiotulokset eivÀt kuitenkaan osoita, ettÀ toimipaikkojen tutkimus- ja kehitystoiminnalla tai viennillÀ olisi vaikutusta toimipaikkojen työntekijÀrakenteeseen.
Toisessa esseessÀ tutkitaan miten yrityksen omistuksen vaihdos kotimaisesta ulkomaiseen vaikuttaa palkkoihin ja työvoiman rakenteeseen suomalaisissa toimipaikoissa. Tulokset osoittavat, ettÀ ulkomaisen haltuunoton jÀlkeen palkat suomalaisissa toimipaikoissa nousevat. Palkkojen nousu on voimakkainta korkeasti koulutettujen työntekijöiden kohdalla.

We also examine whether directly observable measures of technological change and trade explain the changes in skill structure of Finnish manufacturing sector plants' work force. Worker's skill level is defined by both education and age. The data on Finnish private sector establishments for years 1988-1998 reveal that the skill structure of work force has shifted towards highly educated and older. The increase in the share of both highly and less educated older workers has mainly occurred within establishments while the increase in the share of younger highly educated workers has occurred between establishments and by entry of new establishments. The decomposition analysis by plant characteristics reveals that the increase in the share of highly educated younger workers is attributed to relative increase in employment of exporting and R&D intensive plants, while the increase in the share of older workers has occurred equally within all plants. The panel estimation results without plant controls show that increase in the selected technology variables, industry- and firm-level R&D intensity increases significantly the demand for highly educated younger workers while the impact of this variables is much less pronounced or even insignificant for older highly educated workers. However, the fixed effects estimation results provide no evidence that R&D intensity would have an impact on the within-plant changes in the skill mix. With respect to the export-share variable the estimation results provide some evidence that trade decreases the demand for older workers.Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suomalaisella toimipaikkatason paneeliaineistolla työn kysynnĂ€n taitorakenteessa tapahtuneita muutoksia. LisĂ€ksi tarkastellaan miten havaittavat ulkomaankaupan ja teknologisen muutoksen mittarit selittĂ€vĂ€t muutoksia Suomen teollisuuden toimipaikkojen työvoiman rakenteessa. TyöntekijĂ€n ammattitaidon mittana kĂ€ytetÀÀn sekĂ€ koulutusta ettĂ€ ikÀÀ. Tulokset osoittavat, ettĂ€ ikÀÀntyvien (yli 45-vuotiaiden) ja korkeasti koulutettujen osuus yksityissektorin työntekijöistĂ€ on kasvanut vuosina 1988-1998. IkÀÀntyvien, sekĂ€ korkeasti ettĂ€ matalasti koulutettujen, osuus on lisÀÀntynyt tasaisesti kaikkien toimipaikkojen sisĂ€llĂ€, kun taas nuorten (15-44-vuotiaiden) korkeasti koulutettujen osuuden kasvu on tapahtunut toimipaikkojen vĂ€lillĂ€ ja uusien toimipaikkojen markkinoille tulon kautta. Jaettaessa muutokset työntekijĂ€rakenteessa eri toimipaikkojen ominaisuuksien mukaan, havaitaan ettĂ€ nuorten korkeasti koulutettujen osuuden kasvu on ennen kaikkea tapahtunut vientiĂ€ ja tutkimus- ja kehitystoimintaa (T&K) harjoittavien toimipaikkojen kasvun kautta. Vastaavasti ikÀÀntyvien osuuden kasvu on tapahtunut tasaisesti kaikissa toimipaikoissa. Regressiotulokset ilman toimipaikkakohtaisia kiinteitĂ€ vaikutuksia paljastavat, ettĂ€ T&K-toiminta lisÀÀ merkittĂ€vĂ€sti nuorten korkeasti koulutettujen osuutta teollisuuden toimipaikoissa, mutta ei ikÀÀntyvien koulutettujen osuutta. Kontrolloitaessa toimipaikkakohtaisia kiinteitĂ€ vaikutuksia regressiotulokset eivĂ€t osoita, ettĂ€ toimipaikkojen T&K-toiminnan tasolla olisi vaikutusta toimipaikkojen sisĂ€isiin työntekijĂ€rakenteessa tapahtuneisiin muutoksiin. Regressiotulosten mukaan vienti lisÀÀ nuorten työntekijöiden kysyntÀÀ molemmissa koulutusryhmissĂ€ ja vastaavasti pienentÀÀ ikÀÀntyvien työntekijöiden kysyntÀÀ
Paying Moms to Stay Home: Short and Long Run Effects on Parents and Children
We study the impacts of a policy designed to reward mothers who stay at home rather than join the labor force when their children are under age three. We use regional and over time variation in child home care allowance to show that home care allowance decreases maternal employment in both the short and long term, with almost three-quarters of the supplement amount offset by lost labor income. The effects are large enough for the existence of home care benefit system to explain the higher child penalty in Finland than comparable nations. Home care benefits also negatively affect the early childhood cognitive test results of children at the age of five, increase the likelihood of choosing vocational rather than academic secondary education track, and increase youth crimes. We confirm that the mechanism of action is changing work/home care arrangements by studying a a day care fee (DCF) reform had the opposite effect of raising incentives to work. We find that this policy increased the labor force participation of mothers and participation of children to day care, and improved child early test and schooling outcomes. This parallel set of findings suggests that on average in Finland, shifting child care from the home to the market increases labor force participation and improves child outcomes.nonPeerReviewe
