    A preliminary case study of the effect of shoe-wearing on the biomechanics of a horse’s foot

    Horse racing is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has raised welfare concerns due to injured and euthanized animals. Whilst the cause of musculoskeletal injuries that lead to horse morbidity and mortality is multifactorial, pre-existing pathologies, increased speeds and substrate of the racecourse are likely contributors to foot disease. Horse hooves have the ability to naturally deform during locomotion and dissipate locomotor stresses, yet farriery approaches are utilised to increase performance and protect hooves from wear. Previous studies have assessed the effect of different shoe designs on locomotor performance; however, no biomechanical study has hitherto measured the effect of horseshoes on the stresses of the foot skeleton in vivo. This preliminary study introduces a novel methodology combining three-dimensional data from biplanar radiography with inverse dynamics methods and finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the effect of a stainless steel shoe on the function of a Thoroughbred horse's forefoot during walking. Our preliminary results suggest that the stainless steel shoe shifts craniocaudal, mediolateral and vertical GRFs at mid-stance. We document a similar pattern of flexion-extension in the PIP (pastern) and DIP (coffin) joints between the unshod and shod conditions, with slight variation in rotation angles throughout the stance phase. For both conditions, the PIP and DIP joints begin in a flexed posture and extend over the entire stance phase. At mid-stance, small differences in joint angle are observed in the PIP joint, with the shod condition being more extended than the unshod horse, whereas the DIP joint is extended more in the unshod than the shod condition. We also document that the DIP joint extends more than the PIP after midstance and until the end of the stance in both conditions. Our FEA analysis, conducted solely on the bones, shows increased von Mises and Maximum principal stresses on the forefoot phalanges in the shod condition at mid-stance, consistent with the tentative conclusion that a steel shoe might increase mechanical loading. However, because of our limited sample size none of these apparent differences have been tested for statistical significance. Our preliminary study illustrates how the shoe may influence the dynamics and mechanics of a Thoroughbred horse's forefoot during slow walking, but more research is needed to quantify the effect of the shoe on the equine forefoot during the whole stance phase, at faster speeds/gaits and with more individuals as well as with a similar focus on the hind feet. We anticipate that our preliminary analysis using advanced methodological approaches will pave the way for new directions in research on the form/function relationship of the equine foot, with the ultimate goal to minimise foot injuries and improve animal health and welfare

    Graphene as a Novel Single Photon Counting Optical and IR Photodetector

    Bilayer graphene has many unique optoelectronic properties , including a tuneable band gap, that make it possible to develop new and more efficient optical and nanoelectronic devices. We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation for a single photon counting photodetector incorporating bilayer graphene. Our results show that, conceptually it would be feasible to manufacture a single photon counting photodetector (with colour sensitivity) from bilayer graphene for use across both optical and infrared wavelengths. Our concept exploits the high carrier mobility and tuneable band gap associated with a bilayer graphene approach. This allows for low noise operation over a range of cryogenic temperatures, thereby reducing the cost of cryogens with a trade off between resolution and operating temperature. The results from this theoretical study now enable us to progress onto the manufacture of prototype photon counters at optical and IR wavelengths that may have the potential to be groundbreaking in some scientific research applications.Comment: Conference Proceeding in Graphene-Based Technologies, 201

    Gapless finite-TT theory of collective modes of a trapped gas

    We present predictions for the frequencies of collective modes of trapped Bose-condensed 87^{87}Rb atoms at finite temperature. Our treatment includes a self-consistent treatment of the mean-field from finite-TT excitations and the anomolous average. This is the first gapless calculation of this type for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas. The corrections quantitatively account for the downward shift in the m=2m=2 excitation frequencies observed in recent experiments as the critical temperature is approached.Comment: 4 pages Latex and 2 postscript figure

    Investigating the impact of food tourism vlogger entrepreneurs' language characteristics on audiences' attitude and behaviours

    Purpose Despite entrepreneurial linguistic style gaining increased attention in entrepreneurship studies, the field for digital vlogger entrepreneurs still lacks a comprehensive understanding of how linguistic patterns enhance audiences attitude and behaviour. This study aims to propose a conceptual model of “language-mental imagery-attitude-behaviour model” that leads to the examination of rich sensory language style of food travel vlogger entrepreneurs and its persuasive effect on audiences' attitude and behavioural intention. Design/methodology/approach The present study utilises a stimulus-based survey method that involves a sensory-rich vlog script extracted from a high social media engagement authentic vlog. Data are collected through an online questionnaire distributed to a sample of 355 participants via the Amazon Turk mechanism. The study employs confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling to test the proposed hypotheses, with the aim of contributing to the advancement of theories of embodied cognition in entrepreneurial language by examining the attitudes and behaviours of audiences exposed to sensory-rich language. The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the effects of sensory-rich language on audience responses and can inform future research on the role of embodied cognition in entrepreneurial communication. Findings The findings demonstrate that vlogger entrepreneurial sensory-rich linguistic communication style positively influence audiences' attitude, behavioural involvement with food and intention to taste. Visit intention will be enhanced via the mediating effects of attitude, behavioural involvement with food and intention to taste. Practical implications This research highlights the significance of sensory-rich language for vlogger entrepreneurs in entrepreneurial communication, digital storytelling and for destination marketing enterprises in creating a digital sensory engagement marketing strategy. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature by elucidating the theories of embodied cognition in entrepreneurial communication. By examining the relationships between vlogger communication evoked mental imagery, audiences attitude and behaviours, this study provides novel insights into the effectiveness of sensory-rich language in vlogger entrepreneurial communication and its impact on audience engagement. These findings have important implications for communication scholars and practitioners alike, shedding light on the role of embodied cognition in entrepreneurial language and the potential of sensory-rich language to enhance audience engagement

    Morphological differentiation correlates with ecological but not with genetic divergence in a Gehyra gecko

    Body size affects life history, the ecological niche of an organism and its interactions with other organisms. Resultantly, marked differences in body size between related organisms are often an indication of a species boundary. This is particularly evident in the Gehyra variegata species complex of geckos, which displays differential body sizes between genetically divergent species, but high levels of intraspecific morphological conservatism. We report on a Gehyra population that displays extraordinary body size differentiation in comparison with other G. variegata species. We used morphological and environmental data to show this population is phenotypically and ecologically distinct from its parapatric congener Gehyra lazelli and that morphology and ecology are significantly correlated. Contrastingly, mtDNA analysis indicates paraphyly between the two groups, and allele frequencies at six microsatellite loci show no population structure concordant with morpho‐/ecotype.     Dolgozatom központi témája az önkéntesség, annak mind a formális (szervezeti), mind az informális (szervezeten kívüli) változata. Magyarországon a rendszerváltás óta egy sor tanulmány született az önkéntességről, és ismert annak formális és informális csoportosítása is, e dichotómia mégis viszonylag ritkán került a kutatói figyelem középpontjába. Ugyancsak kevés tanulmány összpontosít a többváltozós statisztikai adatelemzés módszereit felhasználó ok-okozati összefüggésekre önkéntesség témakörben. Dolgozatom ezen hiányokat kívánja pótolni úgy, hogy egyrészt kiemeli a formális és informális önkéntesség elkülönítésének fontosságát, másrészt a különbségeket több tényezővel - társadalmi státus, motiváció – magyarázza is. Az önkéntesség vizsgálatának különleges aktualitását 2011-ben az adja, hogy ezt az évet az Európai Tanács az Önkéntesség Európai Évének nyilvánította
