Algebraic Torsion in Contact Manifolds
We extract a nonnegative integer-valued invariant, which we call the "order
of algebraic torsion", from the Symplectic Field Theory of a closed contact
manifold, and show that its finiteness gives obstructions to the existence of
symplectic fillings and exact symplectic cobordisms. A contact manifold has
algebraic torsion of order zero if and only if it is algebraically overtwisted
(i.e. has trivial contact homology), and any contact 3-manifold with positive
Giroux torsion has algebraic torsion of order one (though the converse is not
true). We also construct examples for each nonnegative k of contact 3-manifolds
that have algebraic torsion of order k but not k - 1, and derive consequences
for contact surgeries on such manifolds. The appendix by Michael Hutchings
gives an alternative proof of our cobordism obstructions in dimension three

A cyclical period variation detected in the updated orbital period analysis of TV Columbae
The two CCD photometries of the intermediate polar TV Columbae are made for
obtaining the two updated eclipse timings with high precision. There is an
interval time \sim 17yr since the last mid-eclipse time observed in 1991. Thus,
the new mid-eclipse times can offer an opportunity to check the previous
orbital ephemerides. A calculation indicates that the orbital ephemeris derived
by Augusteijn et al. (1994) should be corrected. Based on the proper linear
ephemeris (Hellier, 1993), the new orbital period analysis suggests a cyclical
period variation in the O-C diagram of TV Columbae. Using Applegate's mechanism
to explain the periodic oscillation in O-C diagram, the required energy is
larger than that a M0-type star can afford over a complete variation period
\sim 31.0(\pm 3.0)yr. Thus, the light travel-time effect indicates that the
tertiary component in TV Columbae may be a dwarf with a low mass, which is near
the mass lower limit \sim 0.08Msun as long as the inclination of the third body

Orbital Ordering in Paramagnetic LaMnO3 and KCuF3
{\it Ab-initio} studies of the stability of orbital ordering, its coupling to
magnetic structure and its possible origins (electron-phonon and/or
electron-electron interactions) are reported for two perovskite systems,
LaMnO and KCuF. We present a new Average Spin State (ASS) calculational
scheme that allowed us to treat a paramagnetic state. Using this scheme, we
succesfully described the experimental magnetic/orbital phase diagram of both
LaMnO and KCuF in crystal structures when the Jahn-Teller distortions
are neglected. Hence, we conclude that the orbital ordering in both compounds
is purely electronic in origin.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Gravitationally lensed QSOs in the ISSIS/WSO-UV era
Gravitationally lensed QSOs (GLQs) at redshift z = 1-2 play a key role in
understanding the cosmic evolution of the innermost parts of active galaxies
(black holes, accretion disks, coronas and internal jets), as well as the
structure of galaxies at intermediate redshifts. With respect to studies of
normal QSOs, GLQ programmes have several advantages. For example, a monitoring
of GLQs may lead to unambiguous detections of intrinsic and extrinsic
variations. Both kinds of variations can be used to discuss central engines in
distant QSOs, and mass distributions and compositions of lensing galaxies. In
this context, UV data are of particular interest, since they correspond to
emissions from the immediate surroundings of the supermassive black hole. We
describe some observation strategies to analyse optically bright GLQs at z of

Towards a population of HMXB/NS microquasars as counterparts of low-latitude unidentified EGRET sources
The discovery of the microquasar LS 5039 well within the 95% conficence
contour of the Unidentified EGRET Source (UES) 3EG J1824-1514 was a major step
towards the possible association between microquasars (MQs) and UESs. The
recent discovery of precessing relativistic radio jets in LS I +61 303, a
source associated for long time with 2CG 135+01 and with the UES 3EG
J0241+6103, has given further support to this idea. Finally, the very recently
proposed association between the microquasar candidate AX J1639.0-4642 and the
UES 3EG J1639-4702 points towards a population of High Mass X-ray Binary
(HMXB)/Neutron Star (NS) microquasars as counterparts of low-latitude

Magnetization steps in a diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain: Theory and experiments on TMMC:Cd
A theory for the equilibrium low-temperature magnetization M of a diluted
Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is presented. The magnetization curve, M
versus B, is calculated using the exact contributions of finite chains with 1
to 5 spins, and the "rise and ramp approximation" for longer chains. Some
non-equilibrium effects that occur in a rapidly changing B, are also
considered. Specific non-equilibrium models based on earlier treatments of the
phonon bottleneck, and of spin flips associated with cross relaxation and with
level crossings, are discussed. Magnetization data on powders of TMMC diluted
with cadmium [i.e., (CH_3)_4NMn_xCd_(1-x)Cl_3, with 0.16<=x<=0.50 were measured
at 0.55 K in 18 T superconducting magnets. The field B_1 at the first MST from
pairs is used to determine the NN exchange constant, J, which changes from -5.9
K to -6.5 K as x increases from 0.16 to 0.50. The magnetization curves obtained
in the superconducting magnets are compared with simulations based on the
equilibrium theory. Data for the differential susceptibility, dM/dB, were taken
in pulsed magnetic fields (7.4 ms duration) up to 50 T, with the powder samples
in a 1.5 K liquid-helium bath. Non-equilibrium effects, which became more
severe as x decreased, were observed. The non-equilibrium effects are
tentatively interpreted using the "Inadequate Heat Flow Scenario," or to
cross-relaxation, and crossings of energy levels, including those of excited

Supermassive Binaries and Extragalactic Jets
Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new
statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most
spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of
sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the
origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are
most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the
peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent
"unified models" of quasar activity. If the supermassive binary model is
correct, all members of "the jet set" (astrophysical objects showing jets)

The Fueling and Evolution of AGN: Internal and External Triggers
In this chapter, I review the fueling and evolution of active galactic nuclei
(AGN) under the influence of internal and external triggers, namely intrinsic
properties of host galaxies (morphological or Hubble type, color, presence of
bars and other non-axisymmetric features, etc) and external factors such as
environment and interactions. The most daunting challenge in fueling AGN is
arguably the angular momentum problem as even matter located at a radius of a
few hundred pc must lose more than 99.99 % of its specific angular momentum
before it is fit for consumption by a BH. I review mass accretion rates,
angular momentum requirements, the effectiveness of different fueling
mechanisms, and the growth and mass density of black BHs at different epochs. I
discuss connections between the nuclear and larger-scale properties of AGN,
both locally and at intermediate redshifts, outlining some recent results from

Quasars and their host galaxies
This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and
quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF
quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan
quasars being found to z>6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun
to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and
our confidence in them, have improved significantly, allowing a start on
relating quasar properties such as radio jet power to fundamental parameters of
the quasar such as black hole mass and accretion rate. Quasar host galaxy
studies have allowed us to find and characterize the host galaxies of quasars
to z>2. Despite these developments, many questions remain unresolved, in
particular the origin of the close relationship between black hole mass and
galaxy bulge mass/velocity dispersion seen in local galaxies.Comment: Review article, to appear in Astrophysics Update
The near-infrared imager and slitless spectrograph for the James Webb Space Telescope. II. Wide field slitless spectroscopy

This mode employs two orthogonal low-resolution (resolving power â150) grisms in combination with a set of six blocking filters in the wavelength range 0.8â2.3 ÎŒm to provide a spectrum of almost every source across the field-of-view. When combined with the low background, high sensitivity and high spatial resolution afforded by the telescope, this mode will enable unprecedented studies of the structure and evolution of distant galaxies. We describe the performance of the as-built hardware relevant to this mode and expected imaging and spectroscopic sensitivity. We discuss operational and calibration procedures to obtain the highest quality data. As examples of the observing mode usage, we present details of two planned Guaranteed Time Observations programs: The Canadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey and The NIRISS Survey for Young Brown Dwarfs and Rogue Planets.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
