Results of data base management system parameterized performance testing related to GSFC scientific applications
The results of a variety of tests designed to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of several commercially available data base management system (DBMS) products compatible with the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 computer system are summarized. The tests were performed on the INGRES, ORACLE, and SEED DBMS products employing applications that were similar to scientific applications under development by NASA. The objectives of this testing included determining the strength and weaknesses of the candidate systems, performance trade-offs of various design alternatives and the impact of some installation and environmental (computer related) influences
An Update of the Mayo Clinic Cohort of Patients with Adult Primary Central Nervous System Vasculitis
Primary central nervous system vasculitis (PCNSV) is an uncommon condition in which lesions are limited to vessels of the brain and spinal cord. Because the clinical manifestations are not specific, the diagnosis is often difficult, and permanent disability and death are frequent outcomes. This study is based on a cohort of 163 consecutive patients with PCNSV who were examined at the Mayo Clinic over a 29-year period from 1983 to 2011. The aim of the study was to define the characteristics of these patients, which represents the largest series in adults reported to date. A total of 105 patients were diagnosed by angiographic findings and 58 by biopsy results. The patients diagnosed by biopsy more frequently had at presentation cognitive dysfunction, greater cerebrospinal fluid total protein concentrations, less frequent cerebral infarcts, and more frequent leptomeningeal gadolinium-enhanced lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), along with less mortality and disability at last follow-up. The patients diagnosed by angiograms more frequently had at presentation hemiparesis or a persistent neurologic deficit or stroke, more frequent infarcts on MRI and an increased mortality. These differences were mainly related to the different size of the vessels involved in the 2 groups. Although most patients responded to therapy with glucocorticoids alone or in conjunction with cyclophosphamide and tended to improve during the follow-up period, an overall increased mortality rate was observed. Relapses occurred in one-quarter of the patients and were less frequent in patients treated with prednisone and cyclophosphamide compared with those treated with prednisone alone. The mortality rate and degree of disability at last follow-up were greater in those with increasing age, cerebral infarctions on MRI, angiographic large vessel involvement, and diagnosis made by angiography alone, but were lower in those with gadolinium-enhanced lesions on MRI and in those with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. The annual incidence rate of PCNSV was estimated at 2.4 cases per 1,000,000 person-years. PCNSV appears to consist of several subsets defined by the size of the vessels involved, the clinical characteristics at presentation, MRI findings, and histopathological patterns on biopsy. Implications of Hadron Collider Observables on Parton Distribution Function Uncertainties
Standard parton distribution function sets do not have rigorously quantified
uncertainties. In recent years it has become apparent that these uncertainties
play an important role in the interpretation of hadron collider data. In this
paper, using the framework of statistical inference, we illustrate a technique
that can be used to efficiently propagate the uncertainties to new observables,
assess the compatibility of new data with an initial fit, and, in case the
compatibility is good, include the new data in the fit.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Report of the QCD Tools Working Group
We report on the activities of the ``QCD Tools for heavy flavors and new
physics searches'' working group of the Run II Workshop on QCD and Weak Bosons.
The contributions cover the topics of improved parton showering and comparisons
of Monte Carlo programs and resummation calculations, recent developments in
Pythia, the methodology of measuring backgrounds to new physics searches,
variable flavor number schemes for heavy quark electro-production, the
underlying event in hard scattering processes, and the Monte Carlo MCFM for NLO

Quantifying the behaviour of curvature perturbations during inflation
How much does the curvature perturbation change after it leaves the horizon,
and when should one evaluate the power spectrum? To answer these questions we
study single field inflation models numerically, and compare the evolution of
different curvature perturbations from horizon crossing to the end of
inflation. In particular we calculate the number of efolds it takes for the
curvature perturbation at a given wavenumber to settle down to within a given
fraction of their value at the end of inflation. We find that e.g. in chaotic
inflation, the amplitude of the comoving and the curvature perturbation on
uniform density hypersurfaces differ by up to 180 % at horizon crossing
assuming the same amplitude at the end of inflation, and that it takes
approximately 3 efolds for the curvature perturbation to be within 1 % of its

kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production
We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in
direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a
brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we
present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider
direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion
production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt
broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed
pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the
direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference
between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the
uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these
results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the

Examination of direct-photon and pion production in proton-nucleon collisions
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic
interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with
expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also
examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which
approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions

Parton Distributions for Event Generators
In this paper, conventional Global QCD analysis is generalized to produce
parton distributions optimized for use with event generators at the LHC. This
optimization is accomplished by combining the constraints due to existing
hard-scattering experimental data with those from anticipated cross sections
for key representative SM processes at LHC (by the best available theory) as
joint input to the global analyses. The PDFs obtained in these new type of
global analyses using matrix elements calculated in any given order will be
best suited to work with event generators of that order, for predictions at the
LHC. This is most useful for LO event generators at present. Results obtained
from a few candidate PDF sets (labeled as CT09MCS, CT09MC1 and CT09MC2) for LO
event generators produced in this way are compared with those from other

Leptoquark Contribution to the Higgs Boson Production at the LHC Collider
In this report we study how a light-scalar leptoquark could affect the Higgs
boson production cross-section at the LHC collider. We construct the most
general renormalizable and gauge invariant effective Lagrangian involving the
standard model particles and a scalar, isoscalar leptoquark, \eta.
The total cross-section for pp -> H+X is then calculated for different values
of the unknown parameters \lambda_eta, m_eta and m_H.(Here \lambda_eta is the
coupling associated with the Higgs-leptoquark interaction.)
We find that if \lambda_eta is moderately large and m_eta is around a few
hundred GeV, then the cross-section is significantly larger than the standard
