    Demographic and clinical characteristics of patients presenting with conversion disorder in a tertiary care hospital in north India

     Background: Conversion (functional neurological symptom) disorder refers to patients who have neurological symptoms in the absence of neurological disease, encompassing one or more symptoms of altered voluntary motor or sensory function. Aim of the study was to study the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with conversion disorder.Methods: The study population comprised all the patients (both inpatients and outpatients) of conversion disorder attending department of psychiatry, government medical college Srinagar over a period of 6 months who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study were evaluated on a semi-structured proforma for demographic variables and clinical characteristics.Results: A total of 76 patients of conversion disorder were included in our study. Conversion disorder is more common in age group of 20-29 years (52.6%), females (93.4%) and among students (71.1%) belonging to rural background. Motor symptoms were the predominant presentation with pseudo seizure (69.7%) being the commonest. A majority of the patients had an obvious psychosocial stressor, of which family-related (36.8%) and relationship- related (15.8%) problems accounted for the major types.Conclusions: Conversion disorders are commonly seen in young adult females, students and in those from rural background. They are mostly preceded by psychosocial stressors

    Adequacy of postoperative pain relief after discharge

    Day care surgery has shown a remarkable development over the last two decades, comprising approximately 60-70% of all surgical procedures. Therefore major proportions of surgical patients are recovering at home and have little or no assessment of the adequacy of their pain relief. The aim of our audit was to compare suggested postoperative pain indicators with targets for best practice. This audit was done at the Aga Khan University Hospital day care unit for a period of three months. On the day of surgery patients having the contact numbers were informed about the telephone call 24 hrs after the surgery inquiring about their pain relief. Patients were shown and explained the visual analogue score from 0 to 10. The data was collected by one of the investigators on the day of surgery. We could assess 63.3% of day care patients. All patients were discharged with analgesia. Only three percent reported severe pain after 24 hrs which is according to the proposed standard for best practice that is \u3c 5 %. Sixty percent of patients had mild or no pain which is less than the proposed standard (\u3e85%) and 84.2% were satisfied which is almost borderline (\u3e85%) according to the standard of best practice

    A new optimized Runge-Kutta method for solving oscillatory problems

    A new explicit Runge-Kutta method of fifth algebraic order is developed in this paper, for solving second-order ordinary differential equations with oscillatory solutions. The new method has zero phase-lag, zero amplification error and zero first derivative of the phase-lag. Numerical results show that the new proposed method is more efficient as compared with other Runge-Kutta methods in the scientific literature, for the numerical integration of oscillatory problems

    A sixth-order RKFD method with four-stage for directly solving special fourth-order ODEs

    In this article, the general form of Runge-Kutta method for directly solving a special fourth- order ordinary differential equations denoted as RKFD method is given. The order conditions up to order seven are derived, based on the order conditions, we construct a new explicit four-stage sixth-order RKFD method denoted as RKFD6 method. Zero-stability of the method is proven. Comparisons are made using the existing Runge–Kutta methods after the problems are reduced to a system of first order ordinary differential equations. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the efficiency and competency of the new method

    Solving directly special fourth-order ordinary differential equations using Runge-Kutta type method

    In this paper, an explicit Runge–Kutta method for solving directly fourth-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is constructed and denoted as (RKFD). We present a relevant-colored tree theory and the associated B-series theory for the order conditions. Based on the order conditions a three-stage fourth-order RKFD method and a three-stage fifth-order RKFD method are constructed. Numerical illustrations are presented to show the efficiency of the new RKFD methods by comparing them with other existing Runge–Kutta Nyström (RKN) and Runge–Kutta (RK) methods in the scientific literature after converting the problem into a system of second order ODEs and a system of first order ODEs respectively

    Safety Evaluation of Oil Samples Collected from Different Food Points of Multan City of Pakistan

    Cooking oil has become a part and parcel of modern food system and therefore its safety is of prime significance for health agencies around the globe to ensure good health among the community. Current study was designed to investigate the physicochemical properties including free fatty acids, peroxide value and conjugated dienes; minerals (nickel & cobalt) and heavy metals (lead and cadmium) in oil samples collected from different areas of Multan city of Pakistan. The findings of this study revealed that free fatty acid percentages, conjugated dienes, cobalt and nickel concentrations were in normal ranges while the peroxide values, lead and cadmium concentrations were recorded above the norms. Strict regulatory measures need to be adopted to ensure good quality oil supply and to protect the people from health implications of physicochemical and metallic hazards prevailing in fried oils and fried foods

    Operation cost reduction in unit commitment problem using improved quantum binary PSO algorithm

    Unit Commitment (UC) is a nonlinear mixed integer-programming problem. UC is used to minimize the operational cost of the generation units in a power system by scheduling some of generators in ON state and the other generators in OFF state according to the total power outputs of generation units, load demand and the constraints of power system. This paper proposes an Improved Quantum Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (IQBPSO) algorithm. The tests have been made on a 10-units simulation system and the results show the improvement in an operation cost reduction after using the proposed algorithm compared with the ordinary Quantum Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (QBPSO) algorithm
