The GPRIME approach to finite element modeling
GPRIME, an interactive modeling system, runs on the CDC 6000 computers and the DEC VAX 11/780 minicomputer. This system includes three components: (1) GPRIME, a user friendly geometric language and a processor to translate that language into geometric entities, (2) GGEN, an interactive data generator for 2-D models; and (3) SOLIDGEN, a 3-D solid modeling program. Each component has a computer user interface of an extensive command set. All of these programs make use of a comprehensive B-spline mathematics subroutine library, which can be used for a wide variety of interpolation problems and other geometric calculations. Many other user aids, such as automatic saving of the geometric and finite element data bases and hidden line removal, are available. This interactive finite element modeling capability can produce a complete finite element model, producing an output file of grid and element data
Species Trees from Highly Incongruent Gene Trees in Rice
Several methods have recently been developed to infer multilocus phylogenies by incorporating information from topological incongruence of the individual genes. In this study, we investigate 2 such methods, Bayesian concordance analysis and Bayesian estimation of species trees. Our test data are a collection of genes from cultivated rice (genus Oryza) and the most closely related wild species, generated using a high-throughput sequencing protocol and bioinformatics pipeline. Trees inferred from independent genes display levels of topological incongruence that far exceed that seen in previous data sets analyzed with these species tree methods. We identify differences in phylogenetic results between inference methods that incorporate gene tree incongruence. Finally, we discuss the challenges of scaling these analyses for data sets with thousands of gene trees and extensive levels of missing data
GHRS and ORFEUS-II Observations of the Highly Ionized Interstellar Medium Toward ESO141-055
We present Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and ORFEUS-II measurements of
Si IV, CIV, N V, and O VI absorption in the interstellar medium of the Galactic
disk and halo toward the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy ESO141-055. The high
ionization absorption is strong, with line strengths consistent with the
spectral signature expected for hot (log T = 5-6) collisionally ionized gas in
either a ``Galactic fountain'' or an inhomogeneous medium containing a mixture
of conductive interfaces and turbulent mixing layers. The total O VI column
density of log N ~ 15 suggests that the scale height of O VI is large (>3 kpc)
in this direction. Comparison of the high ion column densities with
measurements for other sight lines indicates that the highly ionized gas
distribution is patchy. The amount of O VI perpendicular to the Galactic plane
varies by at least a factor of ~4 among the complete halo sight lines thus far
studied. In addition to the high ion absorption, lines of low ionization
species are also present in the spectra. With the possible exception of Ar I,
which may have a lower than expected abundance resulting from partial
photoionization of gas along the sight line, the absorption strengths are
typical of those expected for the warm, neutral interstellar medium. The sight
line intercepts a cold molecular cloud with log N(H2) ~ 19. The cloud has an
identifiable counterpart in IRAS 100-micron emission maps of this region of the
sky. We detect a Ly-alpha absorber associated with ESO141-055 at z = 0.03492.
This study presents an enticing glimpse into the interstellar and intergalactic
absorption patterns that will be observed at high spectral resolution by the
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer.Comment: 24 pages + 8 figures, uses aaspp4.sty. Accepted for publication in

Enhancement of Cavity Cooling of a Micromechanical Mirror Using Parametric Interactions
It is shown that an optical parametric amplifier inside a cavity can
considerably improve the cooling of the micromechanical mirror by radiation
pressure. The micromechanical mirror can be cooled from room temperature 300 K
to sub-Kelvin temperatures, which is much lower than what is achievable in the
absence of the parametric amplifier. Further if in case of a precooled mirror
one can reach millikelvin temperatures starting with about 1 K. Our work
demonstrates the fundamental dependence of radiation pressure effects on photon
statistics.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

radial Coulomb problem which is based on a two-dimensional singular version of
the Levi-Civita transformation.Comment: 7 pages, Late
The Lagrange and Markov spectra from the dynamical point of view
This text grew out of my lecture notes for a 4-hours minicourse delivered on
October 17 \& 19, 2016 during the research school "Applications of Ergodic
Theory in Number Theory" -- an activity related to the Jean-Molet Chair project
of Mariusz Lema\'nczyk and S\'ebastien Ferenczi -- realized at CIRM, Marseille,
France. The subject of this text is the same of my minicourse, namely, the
structure of the so-called Lagrange and Markov spectra (with an special
emphasis on a recent theorem of C. G. Moreira).Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures. Survey articl
Why Might Stratospheric Sudden Warmings Occur with Similar Frequency in El Niño and La Niña Winters?
The effect of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the frequency and character of Northern Hemisphere major mid-winter stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) is evaluated using a meteorological reanalysis data set and comprehensive chemistry-climate models. There is an apparent inconsistency between the impact of opposite phases of ENSO on the seasonal mean vortex and on SSWs: El Niño leads to an anomalously warm, and La Niña leads to an anomalously cool, seasonal mean polar stratospheric state, but both phases of ENSO lead to an increased SSW frequency. A resolution to this apparent paradox is here proposed: the region in the North Pacific most strongly associated with precursors of SSWs is not strongly influenced by El Niño and La Niña teleconnections. In the observational record, both La Niña and El Niño lead to similar anomalies in the region associated with precursors of SSWs and, consistent with this, there is a similar SSW frequency in La Niña and El Niño winters. A similar correspondence between the penetration of ENSO teleconnections into the SSW precursor region and SSW frequency is found in the comprehensive chemistry-climate models. The inability of some of the models to capture the observed relationship between La Niña and SSW frequency appears related to whether the modeled ENSO teleconnections result in extreme anomalies in the region most closely associated with SSWs. Finally, it is confirmed that the seasonal mean polar vortex response to ENSO is only weakly related to the relative frequency of SSWs during El Niño and La Niña
Rapid Genomic Characterization of the Genus Vitis
Next-generation sequencing technologies promise to dramatically accelerate the use of genetic information for crop improvement by facilitating the genetic mapping of agriculturally important phenotypes. The first step in optimizing the design of genetic mapping studies involves large-scale polymorphism discovery and a subsequent genome-wide assessment of the population structure and pattern of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in the species of interest. In the present study, we provide such an assessment for the grapevine (genus Vitis), the world's most economically important fruit crop. Reduced representation libraries (RRLs) from 17 grape DNA samples (10 cultivated V. vinifera and 7 wild Vitis species) were sequenced with sequencing-by-synthesis technology. We developed heuristic approaches for SNP calling, identified hundreds of thousands of SNPs and validated a subset of these SNPs on a 9K genotyping array. We demonstrate that the 9K SNP array provides sufficient resolution to distinguish among V. vinifera cultivars, between V. vinifera and wild Vitis species, and even among diverse wild Vitis species. We show that there is substantial sharing of polymorphism between V. vinifera and wild Vitis species and find that genetic relationships among V. vinifera cultivars agree well with their proposed geographic origins using principal components analysis (PCA). Levels of LD in the domesticated grapevine are low even at short ranges, but LD persists above background levels to 3 kb. While genotyping arrays are useful for assessing population structure and the decay of LD across large numbers of samples, we suggest that whole-genome sequencing will become the genotyping method of choice for genome-wide genetic mapping studies in high-diversity plant species. This study demonstrates that we can move quickly towards genome-wide studies of crop species using next-generation sequencing. Our study sets the stage for future work in other high diversity crop species, and provides a significant enhancement to current genetic resources available to the grapevine genetic community
