The Ulysses Supplement to the BATSE 3B Catalog of Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present Interplanetary Network localization information for 218 gamma-ray
bursts in the 3rd BATSE catalog, obtained by analyzing the arrival times of
these bursts at the Ulysses and Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO)
spacecraft. For any given burst observed by these two spacecraft, arrival time
analysis (or "triangulation") results in an annulus of possible arrival
directions whose half-width varies between 7 arcseconds and 32 arcminutes,
depending on the intensity and time history of the burst, and the distance of
the Ulysses spacecraft from Earth. This annulus generally intersects the BATSE
error circle, resulting in an average reduction of the error box area of a

bursts observed by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment between the end of
the 3rd BATSE catalog and the end of the 4th BATSE catalog, obtained by
analyzing the arrival times of these bursts at the Ulysses and Compton
Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) spacecraft. For any given burst observed by these
two spacecraft, arrival time analysis (or "triangulation") results in an
annulus of possible arrival directions whose half-width varies between 7
arcseconds and 2.3 degrees, depending on the intensity and time history of the
burst, and the distance of the Ulysses spacecraft from Earth. This annulus
generally intersects the BATSE error circle, resulting in an average reduction

The Interplanetary Network Supplement to the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Catalogs
Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the
interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also
detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera
experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network
consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations

Technology requirements for advanced earth-orbital transportation systems, dual-mode propulsion
The application of dual-mode propulsion concepts to fully reusable single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicles is discussed. Dual-mode propulsion uses main rocket engines that consume hydrocarbon fuels as well as liquid hydrogen fuel. Liquid oxygen is used as the oxidizer. These engine concepts were integrated into transportation vehicle designs capable of vertical takeoff, delivering a payload to earth orbit, and return to earth with a horizontal landing. Benefits of these vehicles were assessed and compared with vehicles using single-mode propulsion (liquid hydrogen and oxygen engines). Technology requirements for such advanced transportation systems were identified. Figures of merit, including life-cycle cost savings and research costs, were derived for dual-mode technology programs, and were used for assessments of potential benefits of proposed technology activities. Dual-mode propulsion concepts display potential for significant cost and performance benefits when applied to SSTO vehicles
Technology requirements for advanced earth-orbital transportation systems: Summary report
Areas of advanced technology that are either critical or offer significant benefits to the development of future Earth-orbit transportation systems were identified. Technology assessment was based on the application of these technologies to fully reusable, single-state-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle concepts with horizontal landing capability. Study guidelines included mission requirements similar to space shuttle, an operational capability beginning in 1995, and main propulsion to be advanced hydrogen-fueled rocket engines. The technical and economic feasibility of this class of SSTO concepts were evaluated as well as the comparative features of three operational take-off modes, which were vertical boost, horizontal sled launch, and horizontal take-off with subsequent inflight fueling. Projections of both normal and accelerated technology growth were made. Figures of merit were derived to provide relative rankings of technology areas. The influence of selected accelerated areas on vehicle design and program costs was analyzed by developing near-optimum point designs
The distances of short-hard GRBs and the SGR connection
We present a search for nearby (D<100 Mpc) galaxies in the error boxes of six
well-localized short-hard gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). None of the six error boxes
reveals the presence of a plausible nearby host galaxy. This allows us to set
lower limits on the distances and, hence, the isotropic-equivalent energy of
these GRBs. Our lower limits are around erg (at
confidence level); as a consequence, some of the short-hard GRBs we examine
would have been detected by BATSE out to distances greater than 1 Gpc and
therefore constitute a bona fide cosmological population. Our search is
partially motivated by the December 27, 2004 hypergiant flare from SGR 1806-20,
and the intriguing possibility that short-hard GRBs are extragalactic events of
a similar nature. Such events would be detectable with BATSE to a distance of
\~50 Mpc, and their detection rate should be comparable to the actual BATSE
detection rate of short-hard GRBs. The failure of our search, by contrast,
suggests that such flares constitute less than 15% of the short-hard GRBs (<40%

The well-known Conley's theorem states that the complement of chain recurrent
set equals the union of all connecting orbits of the flow on the compact
metric space , i.e. , where

an attractor and is the basin determined by . In this paper we show
that by appropriately selecting the definition of random attractor, in fact we
define a random local attractor to be the -limit set of some random
pre-attractor surrounding it, and by considering appropriate measurability, in
fact we also consider the universal -algebra -measurability besides -measurability, we are able to obtain

The GRB Variability/Peak Luminosity Correlation: new results
We report test results of the correlation between time variability and peak
luminosity of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), using a larger sample (32) of GRBs with
known redshift than that available to Reichart et al. (2001), and using as
variability measure that introduced by these authors. The results are puzzling.
Assuming an isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity, as done by Reichart et al.
(2001), a correlation is still found, but it is less relevant, and inconsistent
with a power law as previously reported. Assuming as peak luminosity that
corrected for GRB beaming for a subset of 16 GRBs with known beaming angle, the

Are Abell Clusters Correlated with Gamma-Ray Bursts?
A recent study has presented marginal statistical evidence that gamma-ray
burst sources are correlated with Abell clusters, based on analyses of bursts
in the BATSE 3B catalog. Using precise localization information from the 3rd
Interplanetary Network, we have reanalyzed this possible correlation. We find
that most of the Abell clusters which are in the relatively large 3B error
circles are not in the much smaller IPN/BATSE error regions. We believe that
this argues strongly against an Abell cluster-gamma-ray burst correlation.Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter
Optical and X-ray Observations of the Afterglow to XRF030723
The X-ray-flash XRF030723 was detected by the HETE satellite and rapidly
disseminated, allowing for an optical transient to be detected ~1 day after the
burst. We discuss observations in the optical with Magellan, which confirmed
the fade of the optical transient. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra,
we discovered a fading X-ray source spatially coincident with the optical
transient. We present spectral fits to the X-ray data. We also discuss the
possibility that the source underwent a rebrightening in the X-rays, as was
observed in the optical. We find that the significance of a possible
