    Experimental study of a free turbulent shear flow at Mach 19 with electron-beam and conventional probes

    An experimental study of the initial development region of a hypersonic turbulent free mixing layer was made. Data were obtained at three stations downstream of a M = 19 nozzle over a Reynolds range of 1.3 million to 3.3 million per meter and at a total temperature of about 1670 K. In general, good agreement was obtained between electron-beam and conventional probe measurements of local mean flow parameters. Measurements of fluctuating density indicated that peak root-mean-square (rms) levels are higher in the turbulent free mixing layer than in boundary layers for Mach numbers less than 9. The intensity of rms density fluctuations in the free stream is similar in magnitude to pressure fluctuations in high Mach number flows. Spectrum analyses of the measured fluctuating density through the shear layer indicate significant fluctuation energy at the lower frequencies (0.2 to 5 kHZ) which correspond to large-scale disturbances in the high-velocity region of the shear layer

    The Outer Edges of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies: Stars and Gas

    We have in recent years come to view dwarf galaxy evolution in the broader context of the cosmic evolution of large-scale structure. Dwarf galaxies, as the putative building blocks of hierarchical galaxy formation, and also as the most numerous galaxies in the Universe, play a central role in cosmic evolution. In particular, the interplay of galactic and intergalactic material around dwarf irregulars must be more extensive than in more massive disk galaxies because of their lower gravitational potential and lower interstellar pressures. The outer regions of dwarf irregular galaxies therefore yield vital clues to the dominant processes in this interaction zone. The Workshop addressed a number of questions related to the role of the outer regions in the evolution of dwarf galaxies and broader consequences.     A Hessenberg Markov chain for fast fibre delay line length optimization

    In this paper we present an approach to compute the invariant vector of the N + 1 state Markov chain P presented in (Rogiest et al., Lecture Notes in Computer Science, NET-COOP 2007 Special Issue, pp. 4465:185-194) to determine the loss rate of an FDL buffer consisting of N lines, by solving a related Hessenberg system (i.e., a Markov chain skip-free in one direction). This system is obtained by inserting additional time instants in the sample paths of P and allows us to compute the loss rate for various FDL lengths by solving a single system. This is shown to be especially effective in reducing the computation time of the heuristic LRA algorithm presented in (Lambert et al., Proc. NAEC 2005, pp. 545-555) to optimize the FDL lengths, where improvements of several orders of magnitude can be realized

    IRAS observations of irregular galaxies

    Normal irregular galaxies seem to be unusual in having vigorous star formation yet lacking the many dark nebulae typical of spirals. The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) observations of a large sample of irregulars are used to explore the dust contents of these galaxies. Compared to normal spirals, the irregulars generally have higher L sub IR/L sub B ratios, warmer f(100)/f(60) dust color temperatures, and lower globally-averaged dust/gas ratios. The relationship between the infrared data and various global optical properties of the galaxies is discussed

    Members of the family Aphididae were among the first insects to attract attention in this country, and consequently to be investigated by entomologists. From the time of Harris and Fitch, until the present, a large portion of the writings of economic entomologists have dealt with them. During all this time, although more or less complete lists of the described species have been published, there has not appeared a catalogue. It is believed that, as a result of the confusion coming from the lack of bibliographical references, and the consequent difficulty of finding what has been written concerning any certain species, that the study of these most important and interesting insects has been neglected in recent times. The object of the present work is, in some measure, to bring together what is known about the North American species of Aphididae, as a basis for future investigation. Writers have been describing new species, establishing synonyms, adding points in the life-history, and suggesting methods of destroying, until a veritable chaos has reigned. That the best method of advancing the interests of a department of knowledge, at such a stage, is in making a complete summary of all that has been done, certainly requires no proof

    Length control of microtubules by depolymerizing motor proteins

    In many intracellular processes, the length distribution of microtubules is controlled by depolymerizing motor proteins. Experiments have shown that, following non-specific binding to the surface of a microtubule, depolymerizers are transported to the microtubule tip(s) by diffusion or directed walk and, then, depolymerize the microtubule from the tip(s) after accumulating there. We develop a quantitative model to study the depolymerizing action of such a generic motor protein, and its possible effects on the length distribution of microtubules. We show that, when the motor protein concentration in solution exceeds a critical value, a steady state is reached where the length distribution is, in general, non-monotonic with a single peak. However, for highly processive motors and large motor densities, this distribution effectively becomes an exponential decay. Our findings suggest that such motor proteins may be selectively used by the cell to ensure precise control of MT lengths.     In order to shed some new light on the question of the absolute and relative ages of the Ancient Gneiss Complex and Onverwacht Group, a Sm-Nd whole-rock and mineral isochron study of the AGC was begun. At this point, the whole-rock study of samples from the Bimodal Suite selected from those studied for their geochemical characteristics by Hunter et al., is completed. These results and their implications for the chronologic evolution of the Kaapvaal craton and the sources of these ancient rocks are discussed

The Symposium began with the galactic diffusion radiation both because of its importance in studying galactic cosmic rays, galactic structure, and dynamic balance, and because an understanding of its characteristics is important in the study of galactic sources. The galactic objects to be reviewed included pulsars, bursts, solar flares, and other galactic sources of several types. The symposium papers then proceeded outward from the Milky Way to normal galaxies, active galaxies, and the extragalactic diffuse radiation
