Gas micro-well track imaging detectors for gamma-ray astronomy
We describe our program to develop gas micro-well detectors (MWDs) as three-dimensional charged particle trackers for use in advanced gamma-ray telescope concepts. A micro-well detector consists of an array of individual micro-patterned gas proportional counters opposite a planar drift electrode. The well anodes and cathodes may be connected in X and Y strips, respectively, to provide two-dimensional imaging. When combined with transient digitizer electronics, which record the time signature of the charge collected in the wells of each strip, full three-dimensional reconstruction of charged-particle tracks in large gas volumes is possible. Such detectors hold great promise for advanced Compton telescope (ACT) and advanced pair telescope (APT) concepts due to the very precise measurement of charged particle momenta that is possible (Compton recoil electrons and electron-positron pairs, respectively). We present preliminary lab results, including detector fabrication, prototype electronics, and initial detector testing. We also discuss applications to the ACT and APT mission concepts, based on GEANT3 and GEANT4 simulations
The Environment and Trade Agreements: Should the WTO Become More Actively Involved
The article first explores several basic arguments concerning whether the World Trade Organization (WTO) should require member states to adopt environmental standards as major components of international trade agreements. Section II provides a brief background on the debate surrounding environmental aspects of trade agreements and their relationship to development. Section III discusses the benefits and problems associated with enforcing environmental standards through the WTO. Section IV provides arguments for the incorporation of environmental standards in trade agreements through the WTO
A statnet Tutorial
The statnet suite of R packages contains a wide range of functionality for the statistical analysis of social networks, including the implementation of exponential-family random graph (ERG) models. In this paper we illustrate some of the functionality of statnet through a tutorial analysis of a friendship network of 1,461 adolescents.
ergm: A Package to Fit, Simulate and Diagnose Exponential-Family Models for Networks
We describe some of the capabilities of the ergm package and the statistical theory underlying it. This package contains tools for accomplishing three important, and inter-related, tasks involving exponential-family random graph models (ERGMs): estimation, simulation, and goodness of fit. More precisely, ergm has the capability of approximating a maximum likelihood estimator for an ERGM given a network data set; simulating new network data sets from a fitted ERGM using Markov chain Monte Carlo; and assessing how well a fitted ERGM does at capturing characteristics of a particular network data set.
Terahertz electron-hole recollisions in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells: robustness to scattering by optical phonons and thermal fluctuations
Electron-hole recollisions are induced by resonantly injecting excitons with
a near-IR laser at frequency into quantum wells driven by a
~10 kV/cm field oscillating at THz. At K, up to
18 sidebands are observed at frequencies , with . Electrons and holes recollide with
total kinetic energies up to 57 meV, well above the meV
threshold for longitudinal optical (LO) phonon emission. Sidebands with order
up to persist up to room temperature. A simple model shows that LO
phonon scattering suppresses but does not eliminate sidebands associated with
kinetic energies above .Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
statnet: Software Tools for the Representation, Visualization, Analysis and Simulation of Network Data
statnet is a suite of software packages for statistical network analysis. The packages implement recent advances in network modeling based on exponential-family random graph models (ERGM). The components of the package provide a comprehensive framework for ERGM-based network modeling, including tools for model estimation, model evaluation, model-based network simulation, and network visualization. This broad functionality is powered by a central Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. The coding is optimized for speed and robustness.
Specification of Exponential-Family Random Graph Models: Terms and Computational Aspects
Exponential-family random graph models (ERGMs) represent the processes that govern the formation of links in networks through the terms selected by the user. The terms specify network statistics that are sufficient to represent the probability distribution over the space of networks of that size. Many classes of statistics can be used. In this article we describe the classes of statistics that are currently available in the ergm package. We also describe means for controlling the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that the package uses for estimation. These controls affect either the proposal distribution on the sample space used by the underlying Metropolis-Hastings algorithm or the constraints on the sample space itself. Finally, we describe various other arguments to core functions of the ergm package

Optical frequency combs from high-order sideband generation
We report on the generation of frequency combs from the recently-discovered
phenomenon of high-order sideband generation (HSG). A near-band gap
continuous-wave (cw) laser with frequency was transmitted
through an epitaxial layer containing GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells that were
driven by quasi-cw in-plane electric fields between 4 and 50
kV/cm oscillating at frequencies between 240 and 640 GHz.
Frequency combs with teeth at
( even) were produced, with maximum reported , corresponding to a
maximum comb span THz. Comb spectra with the identical product
were found to have similar spans and shapes
in most cases, as expected from the picture of HSG as a scattering-limited
electron-hole recollision phenomenon. The HSG combs were used to measure the
frequency and linewidth of our THz source as a demonstration of potential
applications
