    Interactions between excitation and extraction modes in an organic-based plasmon-emitting diode

    International audienceThis study demonstrates the feasibility of enhancing an organic-based plasmon-emitting diode on the directional light beaming efficiency by near-field surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in both metal grating and polymer grating nanostructures. The interaction between organic/metal and PR/metal interfaces to cause SPPs can facilitate specific directional emission. Directional emission properties give rise to a spectral band-gap response enhancement. Our results also verify that efficient surface plasmon grating coupled emissions (SPGCEs) can improve directionality under index-mediated tuning. Experimental results indicate SP decoupling emission in the visible light. The subsequent emission intensity can increase by up to 3.5 times. Moreover, a narrow FWHM of approximately 60 nm in a defined direction is achieved, and an SP coupling rate is approximately 80% on the metal grating structure. The proposed method is highly promising for use as an active plasmonic emitter and discoloration biosensors with enhanced SPPs resonance energy, owing to interactions with the organic/metal nanostructur

    A Smartphone APP for Health and Tourism Promotion

    The main purpose of this study is to develop an APP by integrating GPS to provide the digitized information of local cultural spots to guide tourists for tourism promotion and the digitized information of mountaineering trails to monitor energy expenditure (EE) for health promotion. The provided cultural information is also adopted for educational purpose. Extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used to evaluate the usefulness and behavior intention of the provided information and functions in the developed system. Most users agreed that the system is useful for health promotion, tourism promotion, and folk-culture education. They also showed strong intention and positive attitude toward continuous use of the APP

    Portal Vein Gas in a Diabetic Patient with Gas-forming Pararenal Abscess

    The incidence of portal vein gas (PVG), which used to be an ominous sign of intestinal sepsis, has increased with progressive improvements in imaging modalities. Therefore, the clinical significance of PVG has changed. Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a rare, potentially life-threatening and gas-forming infection of the renal parenchyma and/or its surroundings. Gas-forming pararenal abscess presenting with PVG is even rarer. We hereby present the case of a diabetic female with poor glycemic control, who was diagnosed to have EPN and PVG concurrently by computed tomography. She underwent percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) of the pyelonephritis. Both cultures of blood and pus grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. Her subsequent clinical course was uneventful. In summary, EPN is a rare but potentially fatal urinary tract infection in diabetic patients, and finding PVG on computed tomography can aid in diagnosis. Conservative treatment with intravenous antibiotics and PCD of pus may be adequate for the patient with EPN. However, nephrectomy may be necessary if the patient deteriorates and PCD fails to contain the infection

    Associations between Aerosol Types and Chlorophyll-a Concentration over Coastal Area in East Asia from Satellite Observations

    This study improved significantly the relationship between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), after considering the effects of sea surface temperature (SST), ocean surface current (OSC) and type of aerosols. The decadal satellite-retrieved Orbview-2/SeaWiFS Chl-a and Terra/MODIS AOD550nm data (from March 2000 to December 2010) were used to investigate the impact of atmospheric aerosols on the Chl-a concentration in the coastal water around the region of East Asia (equator to 75°N and from 100°E to 180°E). Two sets of sequential areas (A1 to A10 and B1 to B9) were selected for examining and excluding the influence of SST and OSC. After taking the potential location of aerosol deposition from OSC into account, an obvious correlation between AOD550nm and Chl-a concentration was demonstrated around the site of study area A. For aerosol partition, the Normalized Gradient Aerosol Index (NGAI) was applied to MODIS AOD products for aerosol type identification and mixed status determination. The results indicated that the type of mineral dust (DS) significantly increases the Chl-a while the biomass burning (BB) aerosols may restrain the Chl-a. This seems to be a non-impact of anthropogenic pollutant (AP) on Chl-a within the surface layer. The other area, B (B1 to B9), next to the region of area A, also shows similar results with high consistency; thus, the significant impact of DS aerosols on Chl-a production is suggested over the coastal region of East Asia

    Evolution of carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii: An 18-year longitudinal study from a medical center in northern Taiwan

    BackgroundCarbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an important cause of nosocomial infections with high morbidity and mortality. The carbapenemases, especially class D carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinases (CHDLs), play an important role, but the relationship between their prevalence trend and carbapenem resistance remains unclear.Materials and methodsBetween 1995 and 2012, we collected 667 isolates of A. baumannii from a single medical center in northern Taiwan. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to determine clonality. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined. Carbapenemase genes and associated genetic structures were detected by polymerase chain reaction.ResultsIsolates were heterogeneous on PFGE. Susceptibility to carbapenem decreased steadily over the study period from 88.1% (2001–2003) to <25% (2010–2012), whereas the isolates remained susceptible to colistin (nearly 100%) and partially susceptible to tigecycline (80%). Starting in 2001, isolates carrying the ISAba1-blaOXA-51-like allele were consistently identified. Isolates containing the transposons Tn2006 or Tn2008 first appeared in 2007 with increasing carriage rates from 17.5% (2007–2009) to 50.0% (2010–2012). The IS1008-ΔISAba3-blaOXA-58-like, blaOXA-72 and metallo-β-lactamase genes were detected only sporadically. Isolates carrying CHDL genes were resistant to multiple drugs, including carbapenem, but remained susceptible to colistin (100.0%).ConclusionIncreased carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii may be caused by the increased prevalence of isolates containing the ISAba1-blaOXA-51-like allele and the transposons Tn2006 and Tn2008

    Long‐Range Cationic Disordering Induces two Distinct Degradation Pathways in Co‐Free Ni‐Rich Layered Cathodes

    Ni-rich layered oxides are one of the most attractive cathode materials in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, their degradation mechanisms are still not completely elucidated. Herein, we report a strong dependence of degradation pathways on the long-range cationic disordering of Co-free Ni-rich Li1−m(Ni0.94Al0.06)1+mO2 (NA). Interestingly, a disordered layered phase with lattice mismatch can be easily formed in the near-surface region of NA particles with very low cation disorder (NA-LCD, m≤0.06) over electrochemical cycling, while the layered structure is basically maintained in the core of particles forming a “core–shell” structure. Such surface reconstruction triggers a rapid capacity decay during the first 100 cycles between 2.7 and 4.3 V at 1 C or 3 C. On the contrary, the local lattice distortions are gradually accumulated throughout the whole NA particles with higher degrees of cation disorder (NA-HCD, 0.06≤m≤0.15) that lead to a slow capacity decay upon cycling

    Rapid Cdc13 turnover and telomere length homeostasis are controlled by Cdk1-mediated phosphorylation of Cdc13

    Budding yeast telomerase is mainly activated by Tel1/Mec1 (yeast ATM/ATR) on Cdc13 from late S to G2 phase of the cell cycle. Here, we demonstrated that the telomerase-recruitment domain of Cdc13 is also phosphorylated by Cdk1 at the same cell cycle stage as the Tel1/Mec1-dependent regulation. Phosphor-specific gel analysis demonstrated that Cdk1 phosphorylates residues 308 and 336 of Cdc13. The residue T308 of Cdc13 is critical for efficient Mec1-mediated S306 phosphorylation in vitro. Phenotypic analysis in vivo revealed that the mutations in the Cdc13 S/TP motifs phosphorylated by Cdk1 caused cell cycle delay and telomere shortening and these phenotypes could be partially restored by the replacement with a negative charge residue. In the absence of Ku or Tel1, Cdk1-mediated phosphorylation of Cdc13 showed no effect on telomere length maintenance. Moreover, this Cdk1-mediated phosphorylation was required to promote the regular turnover of Cdc13. Together these results demonstrate that Cdk1 phosphorylates the telomerase recruitment domain of Cdc13, thereby preserves optimal function and expression level of Cdc13 for precise telomere replication and cell cycle progression
