An open database of productivity in Vietnam's social sciences and humanities for public use
This study presents a description of an open database on scientific output of Vietnamese researchers in social sciences and humanities, one that corrects for the shortcomings in current research publication databases such as data duplication, slow update, and a substantial cost of doing science. Here, using scientistsâ self-reports, open online sources and cross-checking with Scopus database, we introduce a manual system and its semi-automated version of the database on the profiles of 657 Vietnamese researchers in social sciences and humanities who have published in Scopus-indexed journals from 2008 to 2018. The final system also records 973 foreign co-authors, 1,289 papers, and 789 affiliations. The data collection method, highly applicable for other sources, could be replicated in other developing countries while its content be used in cross-section, multivariate, and network data analyses. The open database is expected to help Vietnam revamp its research capacity and meet the public demand for greater transparency in science management
Seawater desalination using air gap membrane distillation-an experimental study on membrane scaling and cleaning
The connection between operating temperature and membrane scaling/cleaning during an air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process of seawater has been systematically elucidated in this study. Experimental and mathematically simulated data demonstrate the profound influences of feed salinity and membrane scaling on water flux at various operating temperatures. Feed salinity exerted significant impacts on water flux at high operating temperatures because of aggravated polarization effects. Membrane scaling and the subsequent membrane cleaning efficiency were also strongly affected by operating temperatures. Indeed, membrane scaling was more severe and occurred at a lower water recovery when operating at 60-50 °C (feed-coolant temperature) compared to that at 35-25 °C. Moreover, membrane cleaning with fresh water and vinegar was less effective for the membrane scaled at 60-50 °C compared to 35-25 °C. Finally, membrane cleaning using vinegar was much more efficient than fresh water. Given the availability of vinegar at household level, vinegar cleaning can potentially be a low cost and readily accessible approach for MD maintenance for small scale seawater desalination applications in remote coastal communities
Growth, survival and food utilization efficiency of longfin batfish (<em>Platax teira</em> ForsskÄl, 1775) larvae reared under different salinity levels
Salinity is crucial in fish larval rearing. In longfin batfish (Platax teira), little research has been conducted regarding the specific effects of salinity on growth, survival, deformity, and food utilization efficiency. This study aimed to determine the optimal salinity level for larval rearing of the longfin batfish by testing five different salinity levels (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30â°). Larvae of 1.5 cm in length and 0.2 g/fish in weight were stocked in cylindrical fiberglass tanks (300 L) at a density of 1 fish/L. The fish were fed to meet their dietary requirement and divided into four daily feedings. Each treatment was replicated three times over a 28-day period of rearing. The results revealed that salinity significantly influenced the growth (length, weight, biomass), and food utilization efficiency of the longfin batfish larvae. Overall, larvae reared at salinity levels of 15-20â° exhibited superior performance compared to those exposed to salinity levels of 10, 25, and 30â°. However, salinity did not affect the coefficient of variation, survival, and deformity. From these findings, it is recommended to rear longfin batfish larvae at a salinity of 15-20â° to achieve optimal growth and food utilization efficiency. This study provides valuable insights for longfin batfish larval rearing guidance, contributing to the aquaculture development of this economically valuable species
