    A nonoscillatory, characteristically convected, finite volume scheme for multidimensional convection problems

    A new, nonoscillatory upwind scheme is developed for the multidimensional convection equation. The scheme consists of an upwind, nonoscillatory interpolation of data to the surfaces of an intermediate finite volume; a characteristic convection of surface data to a midpoint time level; and a conservative time integration based on the midpoint rule. This procedure results in a convection scheme capable of resolving discontinuities neither aligned with, nor convected along, grid lines

    Transparent In-Circuit Assertions for FPGAs

    Commonly used in software design, assertions are statements placed into a design to ensure that its behaviour matches that expected by a designer. Although assertions apply equally to hardware design, they are typically supported only for logic simulation, and discarded prior to physical implementation. We propose a new HDL-agnostic language for describing latency-insensitive assertions and novel methods to add such assertions transparently to an already placed-and-routed circuit without affecting the existing design. We also describe how this language and associated methods can be used to implement semi-transparent exception handling. The key to our work is that by treating hardware assertions and exceptions as being oblivious or less sensitive to latency, assertion logic need only use spare FPGA resources. We use network-flow techniques to route necessary signals to assertions via spare flip-flops, eliminating any performance degradation, even on large designs (92% of slices in one test). Experimental evaluation shows zero impact on critical-path delay, even on large benchmarks operating above 200MHz, at the cost of a small power penalty

    A cursory glance at the list of Nobel Laureates for Economics is sufficient to confirm Stanovich’s description of the project to evaluate human rationality as seminal. Herbert Simon, Reinhard Selten, John Nash, Daniel Kahneman, and others, were awarded their prizes less for their work in economics, per se, than for their work on rationality, as such. Although philosophical works have for millennia attempted to describe, explicate and evaluate individual and collective aspects of rationality, new impetus was brought to this endeavor over the last century as mathematical logic along with the social and behavioral sciences emerged. Yet more recently, over the last several decades, propelled by the emergence of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, neuropsychology, and related fields, even more sophisticated approaches to the study of rationality have emerged

    Anomalous Light Scattering by Topological PT{\mathcal{PT}}-symmetric Particle Arrays

    Robust topological edge modes may evolve into complex-frequency modes when a physical system becomes non-Hermitian. We show that, while having negligible forward optical extinction cross section, a conjugate pair of such complex topological edge modes in a non-Hermitian PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetric system can give rise to an anomalous sideway scattering when they are simultaneously excited by a plane wave. We propose a realization of such scattering state in a linear array of subwavelength resonators coated with gain media. The prediction is based on an analytical two-band model and verified by rigorous numerical simulation using multiple-multipole scattering theory. The result suggests an extreme situation where leakage of classical information is unnoticeable to the transmitter and the receiver when such a PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetric unit is inserted into the communication channel.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Shuttle ascent and shock impingement aerodynamic heating studies

    The collection and analysis of aerodynamic heating data obtained from shock impingement experimental investigation were completed. The data were categorized into four interference areas; fin leading edge, wing/fuselage fin/plate corners, and space shuttle configurations. The effects of shock impingement were found to increase the heating rates 10 to 40 times the undisturbed values. A test program was completed at NASA/Langley Research Center to investigate the magnitudes and surface patterns of the mated shock interference flowfield. A 0.0065 scale thin-skin model of the MDAC 256-20 space shuttle booster mated with a Stycast model of the MDAC Internal tank orbiter was tested in the 20-inch M=6 tunnel, the 31-inch M=10 tunnel, and the 48-inch Unitary Plan Tunnel. The gap region of the ascent configuration was the principal area of interest where both thermocouple and phase-change paint data were obtained. Pressure and heat transfer distributions data on the leeward surface of a 75-degree sweep slab delta wing are presented.     Deletion of apolipoprotein E gene modifies the rate of depletion of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) from mice brains

    AbstractOur previous reports show that apolipoprotein E (apoE) influences the dynamics of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) in brain. In this investigation, the patterns of depletion of alpha tocopherol from tissues of apoE deficient and wild type mice were compared after the animals were fed vitamin E deficient diets. Alpha tocopherol concentrations in specific regions of the brain and peripheral tissues at different times were determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. ApoE deficiency significantly retarded the rate of depletion of alpha tocopherol from all regions of the brain. In addition, comparison of the rates of depletion of alpha tocopherol in both apoE deficient and wild type animals showed that cerebellum behaved differently from other areas such as cortex, hippocampus and striatum. This reinforces the uniqueness of cerebellum with regard to vitamin E biology. Patterns of depletion of tocopherol from peripheral tissues were different from brain. Serum tocopherol was higher in apoE deficient animals and remained higher than wild type during E deficiency. Depletion of liver tocopherol also tended to be unaffected by apoE deficiency. Our current and previous observations strongly suggest that apoE has an important role in modulating tocopherol concentrations in brain, probably acting in concert with other proteins as well

    On the magnetic stability at the surface in strongly correlated electron systems

    The stability of ferromagnetism at the surface at finite temperatures is investigated within the strongly correlated Hubbard model on a semi-infinite lattice. Due to the reduced surface coordination number the effective Coulomb correlation is enhanced at the surface compared to the bulk. Therefore, within the well-known Stoner-picture of band ferromagnetism one would expect the magnetic stability at the surface to be enhanced as well. However, by taking electron correlations into account well beyond the Hartree-Fock (Stoner) level we find the opposite behavior: As a function of temperature the magnetization of the surface layer decreases faster than in the bulk. By varying the hopping integral within the surface layer this behavior becomes even more pronounced. A reduced hopping integral at the surface tends to destabilize surface ferromagnetism whereas the magnetic stability gets enhanced by an increased hopping integral. This behavior represents a pure correlation effect and can be understood in terms of general arguments which are based on exact results in the limit of strong Coulomb interaction.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 4 eps figures, accepted (Phys.
