    Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Breast Selfexamination among Nursing Students in Hong Kong: A Cross-sectional Study

    Breast cancer is a global public health concern. Currently, the crude incidence rate of breast cancer in Hong Kong is increasing. Although breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective screening method which able to reduce mortality rates, only a few women perform it monthly. As nurses play a significant role in promoting BSE, this study aims to study the knowledge, attitude, and practice of BSE for nursing students. A crosssectional design was employed, and 372 nursing students participated in this study. Results reveal that even BSE are compulsory in nursing curriculum, poor knowledge (“don’t know” 46.9%, incorrect 9.4%.), poor attitude (mean = 24.29, SD = 3.49) and limited practice (mean = 7.69, SD = 4.66) were found. Regression analysis support that knowledge and attitude predict practice of BSE. It is important to promote and build up the awareness of BSE to nursing students by enhancing their knowledge and attitude

    Topological Edge Plasmon Modes between Diatomic Chains of Nanoparticles

    We study the topological edge plasmon modes between two "diatomic" chains of identical plasmonic nanoparticles. Zak phase for longitudinal plasmon modes in each chain is calculated analytically by solutions of macroscopic Maxwell's equations for particles in quasi-static dipole approximation. This approximation provides a direct analogy with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model such that the eigenvalue is mapped to the frequency dependent inverse-polarizability of the nanoparticles. The edge state frequency is found to be the same as the single-particle resonance frequency, which is insensitive to the separation distances within a unit cell. Finally, full electrodynamic simulations with realistic parameters suggest that the edge plasmon mode can be realized through near-field optical spectroscopy.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    AbstractObjectiveTo present the prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of a de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation.Case ReportA 37-year-old woman, G3P1, underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of her advanced maternal age. Her husband was 38 years old. Amniocentesis revealed a derivative chromosome 3 with the deletion of terminal 3p and the addendum of an unknown extra chromosomal segment on the distal 3p. The parental karyotypes were normal. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis using cultured amniocytes revealed a 2.38-Mb deletion in 3p26.3 [arr 3p26.3 (1-2,380,760)×1] encompassing 15 genes, which included 3 OMIM genes CHL1, CNTN6, and CNTN4, and a 13.17-Mb duplication in 16q23.1-q24.3 [arr 16q23.1q24.3 (76,999,082-90,170,596)×3] encompassing 207 genes, which included 81 OMIM genes. The pregnancy was subsequently terminated, and a malformed fetus was delivered with facial dysmorphism. Postnatal cord blood analysis revealed a karyotype of 46,XY,der(3)t(3;16)(p26.3;q23.1)dn. Polymorphic DNA marker analysis by quantitative fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) on the DNAs extracted from the placenta and parental blood showed a paternal origin of the aberrant chromosome.ConclusionThe aCGH and QF-PCR analyses helped in delineating the genomic imbalance and parental origin of prenatally detected de novo unbalanced reciprocal translocation

    Collective plasmonic modes of metal nano-particles in two-dimensional periodic regular arrays

    We investigate the collective plasmonic modes of metal nano-particles in periodic two-dimensional (2D) arrays within a point-dipole description. As an open system, the full-dynamic dispersion relations of the 2D arrays are obtained through an efficient method which gives an effective polarizability describing the collective response of a system. Both the dispersion relations and mode qualities are simultaneously related to the imaginary part of the effective polarizability, which has contributions from the single-particle response as well as the inter-particle coupling. The transversal long-range dipolar interaction is dominated by a wave term together with a purely geometrical constant representing the static geometrical contribution to resonant frequencies. As concrete examples, we considered small Ag spheres arranged in a square lattice. We find that inside the light-cone, the transverse quasi-mode has a reasonably high mode quality while the two in-plane modes show significant radiation damping. Near the light-line, we observe strong coupling with free photons for the bands of the transverse mode and the transversal in-plane mode, and the longitudinal in-plane mode exhibits a negative group-velocity inside the light-cone. Vanishing group velocities in the light-cone for all the quasi-modes are found to be intrinsic properties of the 2D metal nano-sphere dense arrays.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figure

    The characterization of tourmaline and its effects on plant growth

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of ACERALIVEN™, a commercial tourmaline, and to test its effect on plant growth. According to our analysis, ACERALIVEN™ belongs to the Si-Al-Mg tourmaline structure. It contains some trace metals such as zirconium, potassium, and iron and able to emit far-infrared energy in the emissivity of 0.829. Introducing the tourmaline into water changes the water to be more alkaline. Tourmaline also releases negative hydroxyl ions and dissolved oxygen creating what is called as hydrogen water. Mung beans submerged with ACERALIVEN™ shows a longer lifetime than without submerging the tourmaline.  Additionally, the tourmaline can promote plant growth by removing chlorine and releasing far-infrared which is beneficial for plant’s metabolism

    Ultra-broadband Light Absorption by a Sawtooth Anisotropic Metamaterial Slab

    We present an ultra broadband thin-film infrared absorber made of saw-toothed anisotropic metamaterial. Absorbtivity of higher than 95% at normal incidence is supported in a wide range of frequencies, where the full absorption width at half maximum is about 86%. Such property is retained well at a very wide range of incident angles too. Light of shorter wavelengths are harvested at upper parts of the sawteeth of smaller widths, while light of longer wavelengths are trapped at lower parts of larger tooth widths. This phenomenon is explained by the slowlight modes in anisotropic metamaterial waveguide. Our study can be applied in the field of designing photovoltaic devices and thermal emitters.Comment: 12 pages, 4 picture
