    StRDAN: Synthetic-to-Real Domain Adaptation Network for Vehicle Re-Identification

    Vehicle re-identification aims to obtain the same vehicles from vehicle images. This is challenging but essential for analyzing and predicting traffic flow in the city. Although deep learning methods have achieved enormous progress for this task, their large data requirement is a critical shortcoming. Therefore, we propose a synthetic-to-real domain adaptation network (StRDAN) framework, which can be trained with inexpensive large-scale synthetic and real data to improve performance. The StRDAN training method combines domain adaptation and semi-supervised learning methods and their associated losses. StRDAN offers significant improvement over the baseline model, which can only be trained using real data, for VeRi and CityFlow-ReID datasets, achieving 3.1% and 12.9% improved mean average precision, respectively.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, CVPR Workshop Paper (Revised

    Lightweight Monocular Depth Estimation via Token-Sharing Transformer

    Depth estimation is an important task in various robotics systems and applications. In mobile robotics systems, monocular depth estimation is desirable since a single RGB camera can be deployable at a low cost and compact size. Due to its significant and growing needs, many lightweight monocular depth estimation networks have been proposed for mobile robotics systems. While most lightweight monocular depth estimation methods have been developed using convolution neural networks, the Transformer has been gradually utilized in monocular depth estimation recently. However, massive parameters and large computational costs in the Transformer disturb the deployment to embedded devices. In this paper, we present a Token-Sharing Transformer (TST), an architecture using the Transformer for monocular depth estimation, optimized especially in embedded devices. The proposed TST utilizes global token sharing, which enables the model to obtain an accurate depth prediction with high throughput in embedded devices. Experimental results show that TST outperforms the existing lightweight monocular depth estimation methods. On the NYU Depth v2 dataset, TST can deliver depth maps up to 63.4 FPS in NVIDIA Jetson nano and 142.6 FPS in NVIDIA Jetson TX2, with lower errors than the existing methods. Furthermore, TST achieves real-time depth estimation of high-resolution images on Jetson TX2 with competitive results.Comment: ICRA 202

    Exosomes from Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Epidermal Barrier Repair by Inducing de Novo Synthesis of Ceramides in Atopic Dermatitis.

    Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial, heterogeneous disease associated with epidermal barrier disruption and intense systemic inflammation. Previously, we showed that exosomes derived from human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASC-exosomes) attenuate AD-like symptoms by reducing multiple inflammatory cytokine levels. Here, we investigated ASC-exosomes' effects on skin barrier restoration by analyzing protein and lipid contents. We found that subcutaneous injection of ASC-exosomes in an oxazolone-induced dermatitis model remarkably reduced trans-epidermal water loss, while enhancing stratum corneum (SC) hydration and markedly decreasing the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-17, and TSLP, all in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, ASC-exosomes induced the production of ceramides and dihydroceramides. Electron microscopic analysis revealed enhanced epidermal lamellar bodies and formation of lamellar layer at the interface of the SC and stratum granulosum with ASC-exosomes treatment. Deep RNA sequencing analysis of skin lesions demonstrated that ASC-exosomes restores the expression of genes involved in skin barrier, lipid metabolism, cell cycle, and inflammatory response in the diseased area. Collectively, our results suggest that ASC-exosomes effectively restore epidermal barrier functions in AD by facilitating the de novo synthesis of ceramides, resulting in a promising cell-free therapeutic option for treating AD

    Establishment and Characterization of an In Vitro Model for Cholesteatoma

    ObjectivesExperimental models are of importance to study the pathogenesis of middle ear cholesteatoma, however, they were not established until now. We aimed to develop in vitro model of middle ear cholesteatoma using primary keratinocytes and fibroblasts isolated from cholesteatoma tissue. HaCaT cell line was used as a "skin equivalent" and to compare the grade of homogeneity between cholesteatoma keratinocytes and HaCaT cells.MethodsPrimary keratinocytes were isolated from cholesteatoma tissue, co-cultured with preliminary prepared feeder layer from cholesteatoma fibroblasts and subsequently air-exposed. The protein profile of cholesteatoma keratinocytes and HaCaT cells was evaluated by means of immunoblot using monoclonal antibody against cytokeratin (CK) 13 and 16. Tissue localization of CK 13 and 16 was accomplished with immunohistochemistry.ResultsDifferent protein profile and stronger expression of CK 13 and 16 were demonstrated in cholesteatoma keratinocytes in comparison with HaCaT cells. Bigger stratification was observed in the 3D-in vitro systems when both cholesteatoma keratinocytes and HaCaT cells were respectively co-cultured with fibroblasts in comparison with the corresponding control groups without fibroblasts.Conclusion3D-model demonstrates the significance of intercellular interaction between components of cholesteatoma tissue

    Antidiabetic Effect of Morinda citrifolia

    Antidiabetic effects of Morinda citrifolia (aka Noni) fermented by Cheonggukjang (fast-fermented soybean paste) were evaluated using a T2DM (type 2 diabetes mellitus) murine model. Six-week-old KK-Ay/TaJcl mice were randomly divided into four groups: (1) the diabetic control (DC) group, provided with a normal mouse diet; (2) the positive control (PC) group, provided with a functional health food diet; (3) the M. citrifolia (MC) group, provided with an MC-based diet; (4) the fermented M. citrifolia (FMC) group, provided with an FMC-based diet. Over a testing period of 90 days, food and water intake decreased significantly in the FMC and PC groups compared with the DC group. Blood glucose levels in the FMC group were 211.60–252.20 mg/dL after 90 days, while those in the control group were over 400 mg/dL after 20 days. In addition, FMC supplementation reduced glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, enhanced insulin sensitivity, and significantly decreased serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Furthermore, a fermented M. citrifolia 70% ethanolic extract (FMCE) activated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-(PPAR-) γ and stimulated glucose uptake via stimulation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in cultured C2C12 cells. These results suggest that FMC can be employed as a functional health food for T2DM management

    Congenital Stapes Anomalies with Normal Eardrum

    ObjectivesA non-progressive and conductive hearing loss with normal eardrum, but no history of trauma and infection, is highly suggestive of a congenital ossicular malformation. Among ossicular anomalies, stapes anomaly is the most common. The purpose of this study is to describe patterns of stapes anomaly and to analyze its surgical outcome with special reference to its patterns.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective case review. The subjects comprised 66 patients (76 ears) who were decisively confirmed by the exploratory tympanotomy as congenital stapes anomalies without any anomalies of the tympanic membrane and external auditory canal. The preoperative and postoperative audiological findings, temporal bone computed tomography scan, and operative findings were analyzed.ResultsThere were 16 anomalous patterns of stapes among which footplate fixation was the most common anomaly. These 16 patterns were classified into 4 types according to the status of stapes footplate. Successful hearing gain was achieved in 51 out of 76 ears (67.1%) after surgical treatment.ConclusionFootplate fixation was usually bilateral, whereas stapes anomalies associated with other ossicular anomaly were usually unilateral. The success of the surgical treatment of stapes anomaly might depend on its developmental status of the footplate. Stapes anomalies were detected without any fixed patterns, therefore, it is quite possible to detect a large variety of patterns in future

    Epigenetic Changes of Serotonin Transporter in the Patients with Alcohol Dependence: Methylation of an Serotonin Transporter Promoter CpG Island

    ObjectiveaaPsychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and alcohol dependence are associated with serotonin metabolism. We assessed the methylation level of the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) promoter region in control and alcohol dependent patients. MethodsaaTwenty seven male patients who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder IV (DSM-IV) criteria for alcohol dependence were compared with fifteen controls. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays of bisulfate-modified DNA were designed to amplify a part of the CpG island in the 5HTT gene. Pyrosequencing was performed and the methylation level at seven CpG island sites was measured. ResultsaaWe found no differences in the methylation patterns of the serotonin transporter linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) between alcohol-dependent and control subjects. ConclusionaaOur negative finding may be because 5-HTT epigenetic variation may not affect the expression for 5-HTT or there may be other methylation site critical for its expression. To find out more conclusive result, repeating the study in more methylation sites with a larger number of samples in a well-controlled setting is needed. Psychiatry Investig 2011;8:130-13

    Management for the Children with Otitis Media with Effusion in the Tertiary Hospital

    ObjectivesRecently, new evidence-based recommendations have been introduced for diagnosing and managing otitis media with effusion (OME) in children. However, there are some difficulties to follow the general guidelines in the tertiary hospitals. The purpose is to evaluate the efficiency of antibiotics or antihistamines for treatment of children with OME in the tertiary hospital with a randomized prospective clinical study.MethodsEighty-four children with OME who had been diagnosed in the tertiary hospital were randomized to receive 5 different medications for 2 weeks. We prescribed antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanate syrup) in Group I (n=16), antibiotics/steroids (prednisolone) in Group II (n=18), antibiotics/antihistamines (ebastine) in Group III (n=15), antibiotics/steroids/antihistamines in Group IV (n=17), and mucolytics (ivy leaf extract) in Group V (n=17) for control. We followed-up children every 2 weeks and evaluated the state of OME at 3 months.ResultsThirty six (42.9%) of 84 children were resolved within average 6.9 weeks after the treatments. Thirty-six (42.9%) were treated with ventilation tube insertion and 12 patients (14.3%) were observed. There was no difference in the resolution rates of OME among the five different protocols (P>0.05). There was no difference in the resolution rates among groups who used steroids, antihistamines, steroids and antihistamines, or other medications to manage 42 children with allergies (P>0.05).ConclusionIn the tertiary hospital, the cure rate of children with OME was not as high as well-known, and antibiotics or anti-allergic medications were not more effective than control. We may, therefore, need any other guidelines which are different from the previous evidence-based recommendations, including early operation in the tertiary hospitals

    Intracellular gallium nitride microrod laser

    We report laser emission from gallium nitride (GaN) microrods that are introduced into mammalian cells and the application of these microrods for cell labeling. GaN microrods were grown on graphene-coated SiO2/Si substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The GaN microrods are easily detached from the substrates because of the weakness of the van der Waals forces between GaN and graphene. The uptake of microrods into HeLa cells via endocytosis and viability after uptake were investigated. Normal cellular activities, including migration and division, were observed over 2 weeks in culture. Furthermore, the photoluminescence spectra of the internalized microrods exhibited sharp laser emission peaks with a low lasing threshold of 270kW/cm(2)
