    Application of stratified emulsion splitting technology in highly hard nuclear cataract surgery

    AIM:To explore safety and effectiveness of stratified emulsion splitting technology in highly hard nuclear cataract ultrasonic emulsification. METHODS: Totally 43 cases(47 eyes)of highly hard nuclear cataract was performed cataract extraction combined IOL implantation with stratified emulsion splitting cataract ultrasonic emulsification technology. RESULTS:Postoperative visual acuity 1 day, 1 week and 1 month best-corrected visual acuity ≥0.5 was accounted for 70.21%, 87.23% and 89.36%. Intraoperative capsule rupture was found in 2 eyes. Corneal mild edema was found in 7 eyes(14.89%)after the first l day post-operation. CONCLUSION:Stratified emulsion splitting technique has a practical application with little tissue damage, low capsular rupture rate and few complications for highly hard nuclear cataract patients and can bring a desirable outcome

    Multi-wavelength Study of Transition Region Penumbral Subarcsecond Bright Dots Using IRIS and NST

    Using high-resolution transition region (TR) observations taken by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission, Tian et al. (2014b) revealed numerous short-lived subarcsecond bright dots (BDs) above sunspots (mostly located in the penumbrae), which indicate yet unexplained small-scale energy releases. Moreover, whether these subarcsecond TR brightenings have any signature in the lower atmosphere and how they are formed are still not fully resolved. This paper presents a multi-wavelength study of the TR penumbral BDs using a coordinated observation of a near disk-center sunspot with IRIS and the 1.6 m New Solar Telescope (NST) at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. NST provides high-resolution chromospheric and photospheric observations with narrow-band H-alpha imaging spectroscopy and broad-band TiO images, respectively, complementary to IRIS TR observations. A total of 2692 TR penumbral BDs are identified from a 37-minute time series of IRIS 1400 A slitjaw images. Their locations tend to be associated more with downflowing and darker fibrils in the chromosphere, and weakly associated with bright penumbral features in the photosphere. However, temporal evolution analyses of the BDs show that there is no consistent and convincing brightening response in the chromosphere. These results are compatible with a formation mechanism of the TR penumbral BDs by falling plasma from coronal heights along more vertical and dense magnetic loops. The BDs may also be produced by small-scale impulsive magnetic reconnection taking place sufficiently high in the atmosphere that has no energy release in the chromosphere.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Ap

    Many distributed inference problems in wireless sensor networks can be represented by probabilistic graphical models, where belief propagation, an iterative message passing algorithm provides a promising solution. In order to make the algorithm efficient and accurate, messages which carry the belief information from one node to the others should be formulated in an appropriate format. This paper presents two belief propagation algorithms where non-linear and non-Gaussian beliefs are approximated by Fourier density approximations, which significantly reduces power consumptions in the belief computation and transmission. We use self-localization in wireless sensor networks as an example to illustrate the performance of this method

    Wogonin induces cell cycle arrest and erythroid differentiation in imatinib-resistant K562 cells and primary CML cells

    Wogonin, a flavonoid derived from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has been demonstrated to be highly effective in treating hematologic malignancies. In this study, we investigated the anticancer effects of wogonin on K562 cells, K562 imatinib-resistant cells, and primary patient-derived CML cells. Wogonin up-regulated transcription factor GATA-1 and enhanced binding between GATA-1 and FOG-1, thereby increasing expression of erythroid-differentiation genes. Wogonin also up-regulated the expression of p21 and induced cell cycle arrest. Studies employing benzidine staining and analyses of cell surface markers glycophorin A (GPA) and CD71 indicated that wogonin promoted differentiation of K562, imatinib-resistant K562, and primary patient-derived CML cells. Wogonin also enhanced binding between GATA-1 and MEK, resulting in inhibition of the growth of CML cells. Additionally, in vivo studies showed that wogonin decreased the number of CML cells and prolonged survival of NOD/SCID mice injected with K562 and imatinib-resistant K562 cells. These data suggested that wogonin induces cycle arrest and erythroid differentiation in vitro and inhibits proliferation in vivo

    Overexpression of ribosomal protein L15 is associated with cell proliferation in gastric cancer

    BACKGROUND: Ribosomal proteins are the components of ribosome, which also exhibit various secondary functions in DNA repair, apoptosis, drug resistance and proliferation. In our previous study of microarray, ribosomal protein L15 (RPL15) was identified as an upregulated gene in gastric cancer. METHODS: We investigated the expression of ribosomal protein L15 in gastric cancer and the effect of RPL15 on proliferation of gastric cancer. RESULTS: It was found that the expression of RPL15 was markedly up-regulated in gastric cancer tissues. RPL15 was also highly expressed in gastric cancer cell lines AGS, MKN45, MKN28, SGC7901 and KATOIII. Inhibition of RPL15 expression by siRNA vector transfection suppressed the growth of SGC7901 cells significantly, which was independent of the expression of Cyclin D1 and B1. Down-regulation of RPL15 expression inhibited SGC7901 cell growth in soft agar and its tumorigenicity in nude mice. CONCLUSION: RPL15 promotes cell proliferation and may be a potential target for anticancer therapy of gastric cancer
