    On the stabilizing influence of silt on sand beds

    In marine environments, sediments from different sources are stirred and dispersed, generating beds that are composed of mixed and layered sediments of differing grain sizes. Traditional engineering formulations used to predict erosion thresholds are however, generally for unimodal sediment distributions, and so may be inadequate for commonly occurring coastal sediments. We tested the transport behavior of deposited and mixed sediment beds consisting of a simplified two-grain fraction (silt (D50  =  55 ”m) and sand (D50 =  300 ”m)) in a laboratory-based annular flume with the objective of investigating the parameters controlling the stability of a sediment bed. To mimic recent deposition of particles following large storm events and the longer-term result of the incorporation of fines in coarse sediment, we designed two suites of experiments: (1) “the layering experiment”: in which a sandy bed was covered by a thin layer of silt of varying thickness (0.2–3 mm; 0.5–3.7 wt %, dry weight in a layer 10 cm deep); and (2) “the mixing experiment” where the bed was composed of sand homogeneously mixed with small amounts of silt (0.07–0.7 wt %, dry weight). To initiate erosion and to detect a possible stabilizing effect in both settings, we increased the flow speeds in increments up to 0.30 m/s. Results showed that the sediment bed (or the underlying sand bed in the case of the layering experiment) stabilized with increasing silt composition. The increasing sediment stability was defined by a shift of the initial threshold conditions towards higher flow speeds, combined with, in the case of the mixed bed, decreasing erosion rates. Our results show that even extremely low concentrations of silt play a stabilizing role (1.4% silt (wt %) on a layered sediment bed of 10 cm thickness). In the case of a mixed sediment bed, 0.18% silt (wt %, in a sample of 10 cm depth) stabilized the bed. Both cases show that the depositional history of the sediment fractions can change the erosion characteristics of the seabed. These observations are summarized in a conceptual model that suggests that, in addition to the effect on surface roughness, silt stabilizes the sand bed by pore-space plugging and reducing the inflow in the bed, and hence increases the bed stability. Measurements of hydraulic conductivity on similar bed assemblages qualitatively supported this conclusion by showing that silt could decrease the permeability by up to 22% in the case of a layered bed and by up to 70% in the case of a mixed bed

    Timing Analysis using the MARTE Profile in the Design of Rail Automation Systems

    International audienceFor dependable systems as in the railway domain the timing behaviour is considered part of the functional correctness. Thus timing requirements have to be traced and refined through the system and software development phases and validation and verification efforts have to address the timing as well as the pure input/output behaviour. We show how timing can be handled in a UML or SysML based approach to the development of software-intensive railway systems by using the new MARTE profile. Thereby timing becomes fully integrated in the chain of system and software models and may benefit from tool support. Moreover, automated timing analysis may be employed via model transformations which enables the exploration of timing-related issues in various design phases

    Barriers to Exercise in a Medical Unit of US Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study

    Military Reservist healthcare workers must meet physical fitness standards similar to those on active duty. They, however, experience a unique occupational environment as citizen Soldiers. Their civilian careers as healthcare workers and their positions in the military both demand shift work, long hours, and critical response to high stress events. For a small group of Reservists working in civilian healthcare occupations who also serve in medical roles in the military, this exploratory study aimed to describe any perceived barriers to exercise. Although over 60% of respondents to an exercise barriers scale perceived physical and social health as the top benefits of exercising, a similar proportion viewed lack of time, time away from family, and financial cost as barriers that most interfered with their ability to exercise. Time and access to exercise, though, are imperative for mission readiness. Respondents may be at risk of not obtaining adequate exercise for optimal physical fitness

    40Ar-39Ar age of the copper mineralization at riacho do pontal IOCG district and detrital zircon U–Pb ages of paragneiss host rocks

    Geological, structural and metallogenetic characteristics related to the Proterozoic Riacho do Pontal iron-oxide copper gold (IOCG) mineral systems in northeast Brazil have been reinterpreted recently and there is an ongoing discussion regarding their genetic model and associated tectonic setting. The mineralization in the Riacho do Pontal district is represented by small copper deposits strongly controlled by the structural features of the basement rocks. Hydrothermal biotite associated with the copper mineralization has a 40Ar-39Ar of ca. 691 Ma, indicating a probable late Neoproterozoic age for the main mineralization event. Detrital zircon grains from the host rock show that the sedimentary protolith is younger than ca. 2035 Ma and was probably deposited in a convergent setting. Our results help to understand the emplacement of this deposit in the tectonic context of the Riacho do Pontal Belt

    The three-nucleon bound state using realistic potential models

    The bound states of 3^3H and 3^3He have been calculated using the Argonne v18v_{18} plus the Urbana three-nucleon potential. The isospin T=3/2T=3/2 state have been included in the calculations as well as the nn-pp mass difference. The 3^3H-3^3He mass difference has been evaluated through the charge dependent terms explicitly included in the two-body potential. The calculations have been performed using two different methods: the solution of the Faddeev equations in momentum space and the expansion on the correlated hyperspherical harmonic basis. The results are in agreement within 0.1% and can be used as benchmark tests. Results for the CD-Bonn interaction are also presented. It is shown that the 3^3H and 3^3He binding energy difference can be predicted model independently.Comment: 5 pages REVTeX 4, 1 figures, 6 table
