A New Transport Regime in the Quantum Hall Effect
This paper describes an experimental identification and characterization of a
new low temperature transport regime near the quantum Hall-to-insulator
transition. In this regime, a wide range of transport data are compactly
described by a simple phenomenological form which, on the one hand, is
inconsistent with either quantum Hall or insulating behavior and, on the other
hand, is also clearly at odds with a quantum-critical, or scaling, description.
We are unable to determine whether this new regime represents a clearly defined
state or is a consequence of finite temperature and sample-size measurements.Comment: Revtex, 3 pages, 2 figure
Predictive Value of Depressive Symptoms for All-Cause Mortality: Findings From the PRIME Belfast Study Examining the Role of Inflammation and Cardiovascular Risk Markers.
OBJECTIVES: To improve understanding about the potential underlying biological mechanisms in the link between depression and all-cause mortality and to investigate the role that inflammatory and other cardiovascular risk factors may play in the relationship between depressive symptoms and mortality. METHODS: Depression and blood-based biological markers were assessed in the Belfast PRIME prospective cohort study (N = 2389 men, aged 50-59 years) in which participants were followed up for 18 years. Depression was measured using the 10-item Welsh Pure Depression Inventory. Inflammation markers (C-reactive protein [CRP], neopterin, interleukin [IL]-1 receptor antagonist [IL-1Ra], and IL-18) and cardiovascular-specific risk factors (N-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide, midregion pro-atrial natriuretic peptide, midregion pro-adrenomedullin, C-terminal pro-endothelin-1 [CT-proET]) were obtained at baseline. We used Cox proportional hazards modeling to examine the association between depression and biological measures in relation to all-cause mortality and explore the mediating effects. RESULTS: During follow-up, 418 participants died. Higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with higher levels of CRP, IL-1Ra, and CT-proET. After adjustment for socioeconomic and life-style risk factors, depressive symptoms were significantly associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio = 1.10 per scale unit, 95% confidence interval = 1.04-1.16). This association was partly explained by CRP (7.3%) suggesting a minimal mediation effect. IL-1Ra, N-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide, midregion pro-atrial natriuretic peptide, midregion pro-adrenomedullin, and CT-proET contributed marginally to the association between depression and subsequent mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammatory and cardiovascular risk markers are associated with depression and with increased mortality. However, depression and biological measures show additive effects rather than a pattern of meditation of biological factors in the association between depression and mortality
Chalcogenide glasses for photonics device applications
Chalcogenides are compounds formed predominately from one or more of the chalcogen elements; sulphur, selenium and tellurium. Although first studied over fifty years ago, interest in chalcogenide glasses has, over the past few years, increased significantly as glasses, crystals and alloys find new life in a wide range of photonic devices. This chapter begins with an overview of chalcogenide glass compositions, their purification, synthesis and fabrication. Focussing on more novel gallium lanthanum sulphide based chalcogenides, as well as reviewing more established materials such as arsenic trisulphide based glasses we then explore the purification and synthesis of these materials, along with their basic optical and thermal properties. Next the fabrication of these versatile glasses into a variety of forms; including thin films, microspheres and optical fibers is explained. This chapter ends with an overview of representative applications of these exciting optoelectronic materials
An adaptive inelastic magnetic mirror for Bose-Einstein condensates
We report the reflection and focussing of a Bose-Einstein condensate by a new
pulsed magnetic mirror. The mirror is adaptive, inelastic, and of extremely
high optical quality. The deviations from specularity are less than 0.5 mrad
rms, making this the best atomic mirror demonstrated to date. We have also used
the mirror to realize the analog of a beam-expander, producing an ultra-cold

Mathematical analysis of the equivalent impedance at the harmonic frequency for the proposed aircraft power system
The proposals for the `More Electric Aircraft' place a significant, increased demand on the electrical power distribution system. To increase safety and reduce aircraft maintenance times on the ground, there is a greater need to quickly identify and locate electrical faults within the electrical distribution system. The work presented in this study provides the mathematical basis for the use of power system harmonic impedance measurement for identifying and locating faults within power cables. The method is passive - that is, it does not require the injection of any test signals - and can potentially be embedded into a centralised equipment controller to provide intelligent, real time diagnostics. The method monitors the harmonic line-line self-impedance at strategic points in the distribution system; this is obtained by measuring load voltage and current. Faults can be identified and located within a few fundamental cycles, and therefore provides a `backup protection' system which does not require measurement of the line current. It also can provide details of the fault location and could therefore be a significant aid to aircraft maintenance. This study derives the theoretical basis of the scheme and provides simulation results for a proposed aircraft power system to demonstrate the validity of this approach to detect and locate faults within the system
Preparation of chalcogenide materials for next generation optoelectronic devices
Chalcogenide materials are finding increasing interest as an active material in next generation optical and electronic devices. There wide range of properties, ranging from photosensitivity, ability to host rare earth ions, electrical conductivity, phase change, exceptional optical non-linearities to name only a few are fueling this interest. Moreover, the ability to synthesize these materials in numerous forms as diverse as 2D monolayers, microspheres, optical fibres, nanowires, thin films as well as bulk glass ingots of over a kilogram in size ensures their application space is vast. We began preparation of chalcogenides, largely based on sulphides, in 1992 and since then have built up an extensive capability for their purification, synthesis and fabrication in various forms. A key aspect of this facility is the ability to process in a flowing atmosphere of hydrogen sulphide which provided the capability of synthesis from elemental, oxide or halide precursors, processing through various chemical vapour deposition reactions as well as post purification.In this talk we describe recent additions to the range of materials we synthesize highlighting transition metal di-chalcogenides for electronic applications, an example of which is shown below, crystalline semiconductors for solar cell applications, ion implanted thin films which provide carrier type reversal, low power phase change memory devices, switchable metamaterial devices as well as traditional chalcogenides glass and optical fibre

Managing to lead in private enterprise in China: Work values, demography and the development of trust
Previous work on trust has focused on employee trust in management. However, issues of how leaders develop trust in their followers in leader-member exchange (LMX) are under-explored. Based on theories of leader-member exchange, attribution and industrial convergence, this study investigates how the work values of leaders influence the development of their trust in followers and how this is moderated by demographic factors. A survey of 219 leaders was conducted in privately owned enterprises in China. The findings suggest that the work value of centralization is negatively related to leader trust in follower predictability. Group orientation and formalization are positively related to the development of trust in follower good faith. Moreover, age and level of formal education are found to moderate significantly the relationships between leader work values and development of their trust in followers within the context of China.
