Current Perspectives on the Use of Meditation to Reduce Blood Pressure
Meditation techniques are increasingly popular practices that may be useful in preventing or reducing elevated blood pressure. We reviewed landmark studies and recent literature concerning the use of meditation for reducing blood pressure in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive individuals. We sought to highlight underlying assumptions, identify strengths and weaknesses of the research, and suggest avenues for further research, reporting of results, and dissemination of findings. Meditation techniques appear to produce small yet meaningful reductions in blood pressure either as monotherapy or in conjunction with traditional pharmacotherapy. Transcendental meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction may produce clinically significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. More randomized clinical trials are necessary before strong recommendations regarding the use of meditation for high BP can be made
Gravitational radiation reaction and inspiral waveforms in the adiabatic limit
We describe progress evolving an important limit of binary orbits in general
relativity, that of a stellar mass compact object gradually spiraling into a
much larger, massive black hole. These systems are of great interest for
gravitational wave observations. We have developed tools to compute for the
first time the radiated fluxes of energy and angular momentum, as well as
instantaneous snapshot waveforms, for generic geodesic orbits. For special
classes of orbits, we compute the orbital evolution and waveforms for the
complete inspiral by imposing global conservation of energy and angular
momentum. For fully generic orbits, inspirals and waveforms can be obtained by
augmenting our approach with a prescription for the self force in the adiabatic
limit derived by Mino. The resulting waveforms should be sufficiently accurate
to be used in future gravitational-wave searches.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Smooth markets: A basic mechanism for organizing gradient-based learners
With the success of modern machine learning, it is becoming increasingly
important to understand and control how learning algorithms interact.
Unfortunately, negative results from game theory show there is little hope of
understanding or controlling general n-player games. We therefore introduce
smooth markets (SM-games), a class of n-player games with pairwise zero sum
interactions. SM-games codify a common design pattern in machine learning that
includes (some) GANs, adversarial training, and other recent algorithms. We
show that SM-games are amenable to analysis and optimization using first-order

Temporal Gene Expression Profiling during Rat Femoral Marrow Ablation-Induced Intramembranous Bone Regeneration
Enhanced understanding of differential gene expression and biological pathways associated with distinct phases of intramembranous bone regeneration following femoral marrow ablation surgery will improve future advancements regarding osseointegration of joint replacement implants, biomaterials design, and bone tissue engineering. A rat femoral marrow ablation model was performed and genome-wide microarray data were obtained from samples at 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 28, and 56 days post-ablation, with intact bones serving as controls at Day 0. Bayesian model-based clustering produced eight distinct groups amongst 9,062 significant gene probe sets based on similar temporal expression profiles, which were further categorized into three major temporal classes of increased, variable, and decreased expression. Osteoblastic- and osteoclastic-associated genes were found to be significantly expressed within the increased expression groups. Chondrogenesis was not detected histologically. Adipogenic marker genes were found within variable/decreased expression groups, emphasizing that adipogenesis was inhibited during osteogenesis. Differential biological processes and pathways associated with each major temporal group were identified, and significantly expressed genes involved were visually represented by heat maps. It was determined that the increased expression group exclusively contains genes involved in pathways for matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), Wnt signaling, TGF-β signaling, and inflammatory pathways. Only the variable expression group contains genes associated with glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, the notch signaling pathway, natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity, and the B cell receptor signaling pathway. The decreased group exclusively consists of genes involved in heme biosynthesis, the p53 signaling pathway, and the hematopoietic cell lineage. Significant biological pathways and transcription factors expressed at each time point post-ablation were also identified. These data present the first temporal gene expression profiling analysis of the rat genome during intramembranous bone regeneration induced by femoral marrow ablation
Demonstrating high-precision photometry with a CubeSat: ASTERIA observations of 55 Cancri e
ASTERIA (Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research In Astrophysics) is a 6U
CubeSat space telescope (10 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm, 10 kg). ASTERIA's primary
mission objective was demonstrating two key technologies for reducing
systematic noise in photometric observations: high-precision pointing control
and high-stabilty thermal control. ASTERIA demonstrated 0.5 arcsecond RMS
pointing stability and 10 milliKelvin thermal control of its camera
payload during its primary mission, a significant improvement in pointing and
thermal performance compared to other spacecraft in ASTERIA's size and mass
class. ASTERIA launched in August 2017 and deployed from the International
Space Station (ISS) November 2017. During the prime mission (November 2017 --
February 2018) and the first extended mission that followed (March 2018 - May
2018), ASTERIA conducted opportunistic science observations which included
collection of photometric data on 55 Cancri, a nearby exoplanetary system with
a super-Earth transiting planet. The 55 Cancri data were reduced using a custom
pipeline to correct CMOS detector column-dependent gain variations. A Markov
Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach was used to simultaneously detrend the
photometry using a simple baseline model and fit a transit model. ASTERIA made
a marginal detection of the known transiting exoplanet 55 Cancri e
(~\Rearth), measuring a transit depth of ppm. This is the
first detection of an exoplanet transit by a CubeSat. The successful detection
of super-Earth 55 Cancri e demonstrates that small, inexpensive spacecraft can
deliver high-precision photometric measurements.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures. Accepted in A
Modelling Future Coronary Heart Disease Mortality to 2030 in the British Isles.
OBJECTIVE: Despite rapid declines over the last two decades, coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality rates in the British Isles are still amongst the highest in Europe. This study uses a modelling approach to compare the potential impact of future risk factor scenarios relating to smoking and physical activity levels, dietary salt and saturated fat intakes on future CHD mortality in three countries: Northern Ireland (NI), Republic of Ireland (RoI) and Scotland. METHODS: CHD mortality models previously developed and validated in each country were extended to predict potential reductions in CHD mortality from 2010 (baseline year) to 2030. Risk factor trends data from recent surveys at baseline were used to model alternative future risk factor scenarios: Absolute decreases in (i) smoking prevalence and (ii) physical inactivity rates of up to 15% by 2030; relative decreases in (iii) dietary salt intake of up to 30% by 2030 and (iv) dietary saturated fat of up to 6% by 2030. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses were then conducted. RESULTS: Projected populations in 2030 were 1.3, 3.4 and 3.9 million in NI, RoI and Scotland respectively (adults aged 25-84). In 2030: assuming recent declining mortality trends continue: 15% absolute reductions in smoking could decrease CHD deaths by 5.8-7.2%. 15% absolute reductions in physical inactivity levels could decrease CHD deaths by 3.1-3.6%. Relative reductions in salt intake of 30% could decrease CHD deaths by 5.2-5.6% and a 6% reduction in saturated fat intake might decrease CHD deaths by some 7.8-9.0%. These projections remained stable under a wide range of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Feasible reductions in four cardiovascular risk factors (already achieved elsewhere) could substantially reduce future coronary deaths. More aggressive polices are therefore needed in the British Isles to control tobacco, promote healthy food and increase physical activity
