Neutral carbon in the Egg Nebula (AFGL 2688)
A search for sub-mm C I emission from seven stars that are surrounded by dense molecular gas shells led to the detection, in the case of the "Egg Nebula' (AFGL 2688), of an 0.9 K line implying a C I/CO value greater than 5. The material surrounding this star must be extremely carbon-rich, and it is suggested that the apparently greater extent of the C I emission region may be due to the effects of the galactic UV field on the shell's chemistry, as suggested by Huggins and Glassgold (1982)
Advanced stratified charge rotary aircraft engine design study
A technology base of new developments which offered potential benefits to a general aviation engine was compiled and ranked. Using design approaches selected from the ranked list, conceptual design studies were performed of an advanced and a highly advanced engine sized to provide 186/250 shaft Kw/HP under cruise conditions at 7620/25,000 m/ft altitude. These are turbocharged, direct-injected stratified charge engines intended for commercial introduction in the early 1990's. The engine descriptive data includes tables, curves, and drawings depicting configuration, performance, weights and sizes, heat rejection, ignition and fuel injection system descriptions, maintenance requirements, and scaling data for varying power. An engine-airframe integration study of the resulting engines in advanced airframes was performed on a comparative basis with current production type engines. The results show airplane performance, costs, noise & installation factors. The rotary-engined airplanes display substantial improvements over the baseline, including 30 to 35% lower fuel usage
On the geometry of four qubit invariants
The geometry of four-qubit entanglement is investigated. We replace some of
the polynomial invariants for four-qubits introduced recently by new ones of
direct geometrical meaning. It is shown that these invariants describe four
points, six lines and four planes in complex projective space . For
the generic entanglement class of stochastic local operations and classical
communication they take a very simple form related to the elementary symmetric
polynomials in four complex variables. Moreover, their magnitudes are
entanglement monotones that fit nicely into the geometric set of -qubit ones
related to Grassmannians of -planes found recently. We also show that in
terms of these invariants the hyperdeterminant of order 24 in the four-qubit
amplitudes takes a more instructive form than the previously published
expressions available in the literature. Finally in order to understand two,
three and four-qubit entanglement in geometric terms we propose a unified
setting based on furnished with a fixed quadric.Comment: 19 page
Culture, entrepreneurship and uneven development: a spatial analysis
Interest in the proposed connection between culture and entrepreneurship has grown significantly in recent years. However, less attention has been given to the nature of the overall impact of this proposed association on development outcomes, particularly at a local level. In response, this paper analyses the relationship between the nature of the culture, entrepreneurship and development experienced across localities, proposing that the link between culture and development is mediated by entrepreneurship. It focuses upon the concept of community culture, as well as embracing a notion of development incorporating both economic and social well-being outcomes. Drawing upon a multivariate spatial analysis of data from localities in Great Britain, the findings indicate that differences in rates of entrepreneurship are strongly influenced by the community culture present in these localities. Furthermore, a bidirectional relationship is found to exist between entrepreneurship and economic and social development outcomes. It is concluded that the embeddedness of local community culture presents a significant challenge for those places seeking to promote entrepreneurially-driven development
3-D Photoionization Structure and Distances of Planetary Nebulae II. Menzel 1
We present the results of a spatio-kinematic study of the planetary nebula
Menzel 1 using spectro-photometric mapping and a 3-D photoionization code. We
create several 2-D emission line images from our long-slit spectra, and use
these to derive the line fluxes for 15 lines, the Halpha/Hbeta extinction map,
and the [SII] line ratio density map of the nebula. We use our photoionization
code constrained by these data to derive the three-dimensional nebular
structure and ionizing star parameters of Menzel 1 by simultaneously fitting
the integrated line intensities, the density map, and the observed morphologies
in several lines, as well as the velocity structure. Using theoretical
evolutionary tracks of intermediate and low mass stars, we derive a mass for
the central star of 0.63+-0.05 Msolar. We also derive a distance of 1050+_150
pc to Menzel 1.Comment: To be published in ApJ of 10th February 2005. 12 figure
One-loop Vilkovisky-DeWitt Counterterms for 2D Gravity plus Scalar Field Theory
The divergent part of the one-loop off-shell effective action is computed for
a single scalar field coupled to the Ricci curvature of 2D gravity (), and self interacting by an arbitrary potential term . The
Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action is used to compute gauge-fixing independent
results. In our background field/covariant gauge we find that the Liouville
theory is finite on shell. Off-shell, we find a large class of renormalizable
potentials which include the Liouville potential. We also find that for
backgrounds satisfying , the Liouville theory is finite off shell, as
well.Comment: 19 pages, OKHEP 92-00
Comment on Higgs Inflation and Naturalness
We rebut the recent claim (arXiv:0912.5463) that Einstein-frame scattering in
the Higgs inflation model is unitary above the cut-off energy Lambda ~ Mp/xi.
We show explicitly how unitarity problems arise in both the Einstein and Jordan
frames of the theory. In a covariant gauge they arise from non-minimal Higgs
self-couplings, which cannot be removed by field redefinitions because the
target space is not flat. In unitary gauge, where there is only a single scalar
which can be redefined to achieve canonical kinetic terms, the unitarity
problems arise through non-minimal Higgs-gauge couplings.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure V3: Journal Versio
Circumstellar Na I and Ca II lines in type IIP supernovae and SN 1998S
We study a possibility of detection of circumstellar absorption lines of Na I
D and Ca II H,K in spectra of type IIP supernovae at the photospheric
epoch. The modelling shows that the circumstellar lines of Na I doublet will
not be seen in type IIP supernovae for moderate wind density, e.g.,
characteristic of SN 1999em, whereas rather pronounced Ca II lines with P Cygni
profile should be detectable. A similar model is used to describe Na I and Ca
II circumstellar lines seen in SN 1998S, type IIL with a dense wind. We show
that line intensities in this supernova are reproduced, if one assumes an
ultraviolet excess, which is caused primarily by the comptonization of
supernova radiation in the shock wave.Comment: To be published in Astronomy Letter
Size-dependent spinodal and miscibility gaps for intercalation in nano-particles
Using a recently-proposed mathematical model for intercalation dynamics in
phase-separating materials [Singh, Ceder, Bazant, Electrochimica Acta 53, 7599
(2008)], we show that the spinodal and miscibility gaps generally shrink as the
host particle size decreases to the nano-scale. Our work is motivated by recent
experiments on the high-rate Li-ion battery material LiFePO4; this serves as
the basis for our examples, but our analysis and conclusions apply to any
intercalation material. We describe two general mechanisms for the suppression
of phase separation in nano-particles: (i) a classical bulk effect, predicted
by the Cahn-Hilliard equation, in which the diffuse phase boundary becomes
confined by the particle geometry; and (ii) a novel surface effect, predicted
by chemical-potential-dependent reaction kinetics, in which
insertion/extraction reactions stabilize composition gradients near surfaces in
equilibrium with the local environment. Composition-dependent surface energy
and (especially) elastic strain can contribute to these effects but are not
required to predict decreased spinodal and miscibility gaps at the nano-scale
