Looking Deeper into Deep Learning Model: Attribution-based Explanations of TextCNN

    Get PDF
Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) and saliency maps have been recently used to explain the predictions of Deep Learning models, specifically in the domain of text classification. Given different attribution-based explanations to highlight relevant words for a predicted class label, experiments based on word deleting perturbation is a common evaluation method. This word removal approach, however, disregards any linguistic dependencies that may exist between words or phrases in a sentence, which could semantically guide a classifier to a particular prediction. In this paper, we present a feature-based evaluation framework for comparing the two attribution methods on customer reviews (public data sets) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) extracted reports (corporate data set). Instead of removing words based on the relevance score, we investigate perturbations based on embedded features removal from intermediate layers of Convolutional Neural Networks. Our experimental study is carried out on embedded-word, embedded-document, and embedded-ngrams explanations. Using the proposed framework, we provide a visualization tool to assist analysts in reasoning toward the model's final prediction.Comment: NIPS 2018 Workshop on Challenges and Opportunities for AI in Financial Services: the Impact of Fairness, Explainability, Accuracy, and Privacy, Montr\'eal, Canad

The duck β-globin gene cluster contains a single enhancer element

AbstractAn erythroid-specific enhancer was previously identified in the 3′-flanking region of the β adult gene in chicken and duck, by transfection into AEV transformed chicken erythroblasts. Here we show that the duck enhancer is equally active in erythroid human K562 cells, presenting an embryonic/fetal program of globin gene expression. Furthermore, no other enhancer was found within the 20 kb of DNA including four β-like globin genes as well as a 1.5 kb upstream and a 3 kb downstream sequence

MODIS reflective and active fire data for burn mapping at regional level

This paper presents an analysis on the forest fires occurred in Galicia (northwest Spain) in August 2006, when nearly 930km2 were almost entirely burned over the course of eight days. This study presents an algorithm for burn mapping that synergistically combines remotely-sensed reflectance and active fire data as measured by the MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer) sensor on board Terra NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) satellite. Burned area data collected from this work was compared to official fires statistics from the Spanish Ministry of Environment and to perimeters that were derived using a high spatial resolution satellite image

Parents\u27 Perceptions of their Role in Early Childhood Health

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to conduct exploratory analyses regarding parents’ perceptions of their role in the health of young children. This study also sought to understand the differences in parents’ perceived roles and their levels of concern for their children’s health status. Understanding such differences is critical to identifying specific areas that might require further intervention
